Birth*Abner, son of John Bartlett and Loruhamah Matthews, was born on 16 November 1787 in Catskill, Ulster (now Greene) Co., New York.1,2,5,7
Marriage*He married Obedience Mix on 23 May 1809.8,1,2
MoveAbner and Obedience moved their residence from Pennsylvania to Ohio circa 1816, 'stopped awhile in Zanesville, and then located on a farm in Delaware county, where they resided ten years, and then came to Knox county and settled on a farm on Granny's creek, three miles from Mt. Vernon.' Hill claims this was when Timothy was 'about 8', but our birth record for Abner Matthews suggests it was more like 1816.9
Census1820*Abner appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Kingston, Delaware Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 310010-20010 as 26-44 yo Abner Bartlett. A perfect match.10
LandDeal*He purchased lots 483 & 484 in Columbus, Ohio on 2 March 1835, from David Jones. On 12 Apr 1936 Abner sold lot 483 to Ridgeway & Adams. After his death his children Tim, Sarah, Joh, Maria, Joel, Wealthy and Mary Jane sold lot 484 to their mother Obedience and brother Abner Matthew Bartlett on 25 Jul 1843.11,12,13
Death*Abner died on 16 May 1836 in Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio, at age 48.3
Burial*He was buried at Mound View Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, Knox Co., Ohio.14
BioNote*Biography Note: If Abner had a will I've not found it. A will is suggested by the deed of 25 Jul 1843 (seven years after Abner's death) wherein seven of his children sold one of his lots in Columbus to his widow Obedience and their brother Abner Matthews. The sellers were Timothy Mix, Sarah Ann, John Demott, Polly Maria, Joel Root, Wealthy and Mary Jane Bartlett.
Two of Abner & Obedience's children were not on the sellers list - Abel Weed and Loruhamah - though both were still living in 1843. Perhaps they had already sold their interest to one of their siblings.15

Birth*Abel, son of Abner Bartlett and Obedience Mix, was born on 17 February 1827 in Kingston or Westfield Twp., Delaware (now Morrow) Co., Ohio. RFB says 12 Apr 1826 but that doesn't jive with his age at death in County Deaths. Find A Grave claims 12 Apr 1827. I've used the date and location from County Deaths. Sources disagree on whether it was Westfield or Kingston Township. Westfield was organized in 1822 in Morrow County, Kingston in 1813 in Delaware County. Morrow was formed in 1848 from parts of Delaware.7,8,5,3
Marriage*His first marriage was to Zillah A. Grant, daughter of Andrew Grant, on 25 September 1847. Per Bouic, issue were Adelbert G., and Andrew W. Bartlett; marriage date assumed from Andrew's age of 9 in the 1860 census. I find no record of this marriage in either FamilySearch dB of Ohio marriages.3,2,9
Census1850Abel appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Marion, Marion Co., Ohio, as 24 yo A W Bartlett in the household of his father-in-law Andrew Grant; as 47 yo inn keeper And & 42 yo probable wife Sarah Grant.10
Census1860*Abel and Zillah appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cardington, Morrow Co., Ohio, enumerated 29 June 1860, as 33 yo tailor A W & 24 yo Z A Bartlett. Their son Andrew Winfield was listed as living with them.11
Marriage*His second marriage was to Eliza M. Peak on 27 October 1868 at Morrow Co., Ohio. Eliza shows 3 born with 1 living in the 1900 census. Delaware & Union confirms this was Abel's 2nd marriage.12,13
Census1870*Abel and Eliza appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Cardington, Morrow Co., Ohio, enumerated 4 August 1870, as 44 yo farmer Abraham (Abrilham?) W & 34 yo Eliza M Bartlett. Their son Clyde P. was listed as living with them, as well as unknown person 12 yo Willis Terry.14
Census1880Abel and Eliza appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Brown Twp., Delaware Co., Ohio, enumerated 8 June 1880, as 54 yo farmer Abel & 44 yo wife Eliza Bartlett. Their children Andrew Winfield and Olin Webb were listed as living with them.15
Residence*Abel resided in Eden, Delaware Co., Ohio, in 1895.1
Census1900Abel and Eliza appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Westfield Twp., Morrow Co., Ohio, enumerated 21 June 1900, as 74 yo farmer Abel W & 64 yo wife Eliza M Bartlett.16
Death*Abel died on 9 August 1902 in Westfield, Morrow Co., Ohio, at age 75.7,8
Burial*He was buried at Westfield Cemetery in Westfield, Morrow Co., Ohio.8

John Howland Sr.1,2

M, #1588, b. between 1595 and 1602, d. 23 February 1672/73
FatherHenry Howland1,3 d. 17 May 1635
MotherMargaret Lnu1,3 d. b 31 Jul 1629
Last Edited24 Jan 2025
Birth*John, son of Henry Howland and Margaret Lnu, was born between 1595 and 1602 in England. White notes that John grew up in Fenstanton, Huntingdonshire, England, and that he died "above eighty years" in 1673. If true then John was born ca. 1592. This has been the traditional birthyear. Johnson argues a different interpretation and I like it,
"It has been traditionally reported that John Howland was born about 1592, based on his reported age at death in the Plymouth Church Records. However, ages at death were often overstated, and that is clearly the case here. John Howland came as a servant for John Carver, which means he was under 25 years old at the time (i.e. he was born after 1595). William Bradford, in the falling-overboard incident, refers to Howland as a "lusty young man," a term that would not likely have applied to a 28-year old given that Bradford himself was only 30. Bradford did call 21-year old John Alden a "young man" though. Howland's wife Elizabeth was born in 1607: a 32-year old marrying a 17-year old is a relatively unlikely circumstance. Howland's last child was born in 1649: a 57-year old Howland would be an unlikely father. All these taken together demonstrate that Howland's age was likely overstated by at least 5 years. Since he signed the "Mayflower Compact", we can assume he was probably at least 18 to 21 years old in 1620".4,1
Arrivals*John Howland Sr. arrived at Plymouth, Devonshire, England, circa 5 September 1620, aboard the Speedwell, where they changed ships, the Speedwell haven proven unseaworthy.5
BioNoteBiography Note of October 1620: Willison writes, "Then, suddenly, the weather changed as fierce storms came roaring out of the west. Unable to endure it any longer in the stuffy hold, John Howland came on deck one day and was immediately swept overboard. The ship happened to be trailing some of the topsail halyards, and Howland managed to get hold of these and hang on, 'though he was sundrie fadomes under water,' till he was pulled in with a boat hook. He was 'something ill with it, yet he lived many years after, and became a profitable member both in church & commone wealthe."6
Immigration*John immigrated to Plymouth Colony, New England, on 26 December 1620, aboard the Mayflower. John was thirteenth signer of the Mayflower Compact, aboard ship in Cape Cod Bay, 11 Nov 1620.7
Marriage*He married Elizabeth Tilley, daughter of John Tilley and Joan Hurst, on 25 March 1623 in Plymouth Colony, New England. White writes, "On or about what was then New Year's Day, 25 March 1623 (old style), John Howland married his fellow Mayflower passenger, Elizabeth Tilley"; Howland writes, "It is probably that John and Elizabeth were married towards the close of 1623 or early in 1624 and was the fifth or sixth marriage in the Plymouth colony".8,2,9
Residence*John and Elizabeth resided at Kennebec River in (now Augusta), Province of Maine, New England, between 1629 and 1634. John ran the trading post at site of future Augusta, Maine, trading beaver, otter and other furs with the Indians. The settlement was known by its Indian name—Cushnoc (or Coussinoc or Koussinoc), meaning "head of tide." Fur trading was at first profitable, but with Indian uprisings and declining revenues, the Plymouth Colony sold the Kennebec Patent in 1661. Cushnoc would remain empty for the next 75 years. Our early date of 1629 is per Wikipedia. The latter date of 1634 is per Willison, noting John was "in charge of Kennebec trading post at time of Hocking murder, 1634".10,11,12
BioNoteBiography Note of 1632: Willison writes, "Again there was a clamor for division of the common lands. It became so loud and insistent that the authorities gave way in 1632, distributing thousands of acres among the fifty-eight Purchasers in proportion to the number of shares each held in the colony. As the better farm lands and meadows lay in that direction, most of the assignments were made to the north of town. Bradford and John Howland were given large tracts along the Jones River, about five miles distant, in what is now Kingston."13
ResidenceJohn and Elizabeth resided in Rocky Nook, Plymouth Colony, New England, in 1639. Rocky Nook is now in Kingston, Plymouth County. It was then part of Plymouth Colony. William Howland says this move was in 1638.12,2
Estate-WillJohn was mentioned in the will of Humphrey Howland dated 28 May 1646 at London, England.1
Estate-Will*John Howland Sr. left a will dated 29 May 1672 at Plymouth Colony, New England, naming his wife Elizabeth his sole executrix and an heir. Other named heirs included his sons John, Jabez, Isaac and Joseph, daughters Desire, Hope, Elizabeth, Lydia, Hannah and Ruth and granddaughter Elizabeth Howland, daughter of his son John.14,15
BioNote*Biography Note: See Howland for biographical info, inventory of estate, etc. Famous Howland descendants include Presidents F. D. Roosevelt, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush, authors Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, actors Humphrey Bogart, Christopher Lloyd, and Alec Baldwin, among others.16,17
Death*John died on 23 February 1672/73 in Rocky Nook, Plymouth Colony, New England.15,2
Burial*He was buried in an unmarked grave on Burial Hill. The photograph attached as exhibit is a monument erected, I believe, by the Mayflower Society.18,19
