Birth*David, son of Alexander A. McKee and Sarah Jemimah Baird, was born in October 1857 in Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas. TXGenWeb's date is c1856. FamilySearch Trees (ID KCKZ-C78) claims his middle name was Andrew as does Find A Grave, but without headstone to corroborate. Others say Alexander.5,6,7
BaptismDavid was baptized on 13 October 1858 at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Bethel, Fannin Co., Texas.8
Census1860David appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas in the household of his parents, Alexander A. McKee and Sarah Jemimah Baird, as 4 yo David McKee.9
Census1870David appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas in the household of his parents, Alexander A. McKee and Sarah Jemimah Baird, as 12 yo David McKey.10
Census1880David appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of 2nd Pct., Lamar Co., Texas, as 22 yo farmer brother D A McKee in the household of Charles W. McKee and Mattie Josephine Provine; as 28 yo farmer C W & 26 yo wife Mattie J McKee.11
Marriage*He married Arabella C. "Arra" Odell from 1 February 1893 to 4 February 1893 in Fannin Co., Texas. Allen claims 04 Feb, Select says 01 Feb. Perhaps one is the license and the other the marriage.
Other issue per Allen was David Hilburn McKee but I've seen no evidence in support.
Arra apparently remarried before 1918 to Fnu Covel. She shows up with the Covel surname in several documents, e.g. son Raymond's WWI draft card. I've been unable to find Arra in ANY of the 1910-1950 censuses!.12,13,7
Census1900*David and Arabella appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Twp. 5, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, enumerated 22 June 1900, as 42 yo David A & 27 yo wife Arabella C McKee. Their children Otis Leeman and Raymond Provine were listed as living with them, as well as 29 yo boarder Floyd Johnson. This census is unreadable so I've relied on HQO's values.14
Death*David died on 21 August 1908 in Caddo Co., Oklahoma, at age 50. His remains were brought to Texas from Caddo, Bryan Co., Oklahoma.6,15,5
Burial*He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas. Find A Grave provides no headstone photo but does show an unidentified obit.5,15

Birth*Martha, daughter of Alexander A. McKee and Sarah Jemimah Baird, was born on 21 April 1859 in Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas. Find A Grave's date is Jan 1861, but that doesn't jive with the 1860 census.3,4,1,5,6
BaptismMartha was baptized on 11 October 1859 at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Bethel, Fannin Co., Texas.5
Census1860Martha appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas in the household of her parents, Alexander A. McKee and Sarah Jemimah Baird, as 2 yo Martha McKee.7
Census1870Martha appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas in the household of her parents, Alexander A. McKee and Sarah Jemimah Baird, as 9 yo Martha McKey.8
Marriage*She married James B. Smith on 30 July 1878 in Lamar Co., Texas. Did Mattie m2 after James's death to a Fnu Beard? Son Sam's SS App lists his parents as James B Smith & Mattie E Beard.9,10,11
Census1880*Martha and James appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Pct. 5, Fannin Co., Texas, enumerated 22 June 1880, as 21 yo farm hand J B & 20 yo wife M E Smith in the home of 60 yo farmer Pink & 56 yo wife M J Smith, likely his parents. Their son Pinkney A. was listed as living with them.12
Census1900*Martha appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 5, Fannin Co., Texas, enumerated 13 June 1900, as 39 yo widow farmer Mattie Smith. Her children Pinkney A., William, Samuel Walter, Herbert Cleveland, Elzie Warren, Albert A. and Sallie Ellen were listed as living with her.13
Census1910Martha appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Pct. 1, Grayson Co., Texas, enumerated 18 April 1910, as 49 yo widow & boarding house keeper Mattie E Smith. Her children Samuel Walter, Elzie Warren, Albert A. and Sallie Ellen were listed as living with her. Mattie is in same family & visitation, but next house number, as George C & Mamie Cook. In the family below, with same house number but new visitation and family numbers, we find Mattie's son Herbert and his family.
Initially I thought Mamie was d/o Mattie but additional research shows her to have been the d/o Wm Thomas Stancell & Cornelia George.14
Census1910Martha appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of 7 Cotton Mill Addition, Justice Pct. 1, Grayson Co., Texas, as a neighbor of her son & daughter-in-law Herbert Cleveland Smith and Bessie May McCauley.15
Death*Martha died on 19 April 1912 in Sherman, Grayson Co., Texas, at age 52, of meningitis. Allen claims 12 May 1910 but TX Deaths and Find A Grave agree on 19 Apr 1912 in Grayson County. There is a record for a Mrs. Mattie Smith in Ancestry's Texas, U.S., Death Index, 1903-2000 database with death date of 12 May 1910.16,17,1,6

Last Edited19 Aug 2024
Birth*Lucy, daughter of Alexander A. McKee and Sarah Jemimah Baird, was born on 21 January 1862 in Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas. Her obit unfortunately calls her just Lucy Bell and does not name her parents.7,8,9
ResearchNoteResearch Note of 19 August 2024 re Find A Grave error. Find A Grave shows Lucy B. McKee (1862-1934) as daughter of Daniel & Sarah McKee. The 1870 & 1880 censuses have her living with Alex & Sarah, specifically as a daughter in 1880. There's an outside chance she was the daughter of Dan and Sarah but was for reasons unknown living with her uncle & aunt. Her death certificate also lists her parents as Dan & Sarah. This is likely the source of Find A Grave's confusion.5,7

Census1870Lucy appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas in the household of her parents, Alexander A. McKee and Sarah Jemimah Baird, as 8 yo Lusey (indexed Susey) B McKey.10
Census1880Lucy appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of 2nd Pct., Lamar Co., Texas in the household of her parents, Alexander A. McKee and Sarah Jemimah Baird, as 17 yo daughter Lucy McKee.11
Marriage*She married Warren Stone Thomas on 9 December 1882 in Lamar Co., Texas.12,13,3
Census1900*Lucy and Warren appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 5, Fannin Co., Texas, enumerated 27 June 1900, as 45 yo farmer Warren & 38 yo wife Lucy Thomas. Their children William Arthur, Minnie Elizabeth, Walter Stone, Elmer Graves, Roy Talmage and Lillie Belle were listed as living with them.14
Census1910Lucy and Warren appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 5, Fannin Co., Texas, enumerated 2 May 1910, as 54 yo farmer Warren S & 47 yo wife Lucy B Thomas. Their children Elmer Graves, Roy Talmage, Lillie Belle and Beulah Mae were listed as living with them.15
Census1920Lucy and Warren appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas, enumerated 5 January 1920, as 64 yo farmer Warren S & 57 yo wife Lucy B Thomas. Their daughter Beulah Mae was listed as living with them.16
Census1930Lucy and Warren appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Pct. 5, Fannin Co., Texas, enumerated 8 April 1930, as 74 yo Warren & 68 yo wife Lucy B Thomas.17
Death*Lucy died on 9 July 1934 in Dallas, Dallas Co., Texas, at age 72, of angina pectoris (a heart attack). Her Find A Grave memorial says 11 July, though her headstone clearly reads 09 July. Survived by her husband and seven children according to her obit. Her son Ray claimed Lucy's parents as Dan & Sarah McKee on her death certificate.7,8,18
Burial*She was buried on 11 July 1934 at Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas. Joint headstone & obit available at Find A Grave.8,18,9

Daniel E. McKee1,2,3

M, #1970, b. 18 February 1825, d. 25 June 1887
FatherIsaac McKee4,2 b. 20 Jul 1788, d. fr 24 Aug 1842 - 1844
MotherNancy Janet "Jane" Richmond4,5,2 b. 15 Dec 1790, d. a 12 Jul 1860
Last Edited29 Jan 2025
Birth*Daniel, son of Isaac McKee and Nancy Janet "Jane" Richmond, was born on 18 February 1825 in Carroll Co., Tennessee. Luta McKee checked headstone which says 1825; the 1860 Federal says 1827±1.6,7,8
Census1830Daniel is probably one of the two males age 5 to 9 listed in the household of his father, Isaac McKee, in the 1830 Federal Census of Carroll Co., Tennessee.9
Census1840Daniel is probably one of the two males age 15 to 19 listed in the household of his father, Isaac McKee, in the 1840 Federal Census of Gibson Co., Tennessee.10
MoveDaniel joined the move of his parents from Tennessee to Texas in 1841.11,12,13
ResearchNote*Research Note of 24 November 2023 re Daniel McKee's parents. In 1968 Don Shaw photographed the Births page of the McKee Family Bible, then in possession of Lloyd McKee of Dial Texas. The following persons are listed:
     Isaac McKee (b. 20 Jul 1788), Jane McKee (b. 15 Dec 1790), D E McKee (b. 18 Feb 1825), S B McKee(b. 16 Mar 1829), S J McKee (b. 20 Nov 1853), J A McKee (b. 25 Oct 1855), Emily Ann McKee (b. 26 Jun 1858), Mary Susan McKee (b. 11 Oct 1860), Cynthia Belle McKee (b. 12 Jul 1863), J W McKee (b. 22 Dec 1865), Ellen E McKee (b. 17 Feb 1868), T D McKee (b. 11 Mar 1870), and Edgar Wilson McKee (b. 12 Oct 1874).
No relationships are shown. From other sources and inferences we derive the following relationships, in the order listed above:
Isaac & Jane McKee had son Daniel E McKee who m. Sarah B McKee. They had son Samuel J McKee, son James A McKee, daughter Emeline Ann McKee, daughter Mary Susan McKee, daughter Cynthia Belle McKee, son James Wallace McKee, daughter Ellen Elizabeth McKee, son Thomas D McKee, and son Edgar Wilson McKee.14

Census1850Daniel appeared on the 1850 Federal Census Fannin Co., Texas in the household of his mother, Nancy Janet "Jane" Richmond, as 25 yo laborer D E McKee.15
Marriage*He married Sarah B. Wilson, daughter of Joseph Wilson and Sarah B. Donaldson, on 8 January 1852 in Fannin Co., Texas. Research Files says "no license found but listed in register at Court House in supplemental binder. Fannin County".11,16
LandDeal*He purchased 320 acres in Fannin County from an unknown seller circa 1853.17
Census1860*Daniel and Sarah appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas, enumerated 5 July 1860, as 33 yo stone mason D A & 24 yo S B McKee. Their children Samuel J., James A. "Jimmie" and Emeline Ann "Emma" were listed as living with them, as well as 24 yo carpenter J H Reeman.1
Milit-Service*Daniel E. McKee served with Capt. John W. Piner's Company, Texas State Brigade, 14th Regiment of the Texas State Troops during the Civil War , enlisting 6 July 1861. This regiment was never activated, but the men went on to become part of the regular CSA and other Texas State Troops in 1862.18,19
ResearchNote*Research Note of 19 August 2024 re Find A Grave error. This is likely the source of Find A Grave's confusion.20,21

Census1870Daniel and Sarah appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas, enumerated 21 October 1870, as 45 yo stone mason Daniel & 40 yo Sarah McKey. Their children Samuel J., James A. "Jimmie", Emeline Ann "Emma", Mary Susan, Cynthia Belle, Joseph Wallace, Ellen Elizabeth and Joseph W. were listed as living with them. Daniel's brother Alexander and family live next door.22
Census1870Daniel appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas, as a neighbor of his nephew James Barnet "JB" McKee.23
Census1880*Daniel appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of 2nd Pct., Lamar Co., Texas, enumerated 1 June 1880, as 55 yo widowed farmer Daniel E McKee. His children Samuel J., James A. "Jimmie", Emeline Ann "Emma", Mary Susan, Cynthia Belle, Joseph Wallace, Ellen Elizabeth, Thomas D. and Edgar Wilson were listed as living with him.7
Death*Daniel died on 25 June 1887 in Lane's Campground, Fannin Co., Texas, at age 62. Bible provides exact date on first page, although the "piece of paper within the Bible" shows 1888. 1887 per Luta McKee who checked headstone.24,25
Burial*He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas, in Section D. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.26,27

Census1850Sarah appeared on the 1850 Federal Census Hunt Co., Texas in the household of her parents, Joseph Wilson and Sarah B. Donaldson, as 20 yo Sarah B Wilson.12,13
Marriage*She married Daniel E. McKee, son of Isaac McKee and Nancy Janet "Jane" Richmond, on 8 January 1852 in Fannin Co., Texas. Research Files says "no license found but listed in register at Court House in supplemental binder. Fannin County".14,15

ResearchNote*Research Note of 19 August 2024 re Find A Grave error. This is likely the source of Find A Grave's confusion.17,18

Joseph W. McKee1,2

M, #1979, b. circa August 1870
FatherDaniel E. McKee2 b. 18 Feb 1825, d. 25 Jun 1887
MotherSarah B. Wilson2 b. 16 Mar 1829, d. 31 Dec 1879
Last Edited21 Aug 2024
Birth*Joseph, son of Daniel E. McKee and Sarah B. Wilson, was born circa August 1870 in Texas.3
Census1870Joseph appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas in the household of his parents, Daniel E. McKee and Sarah B. Wilson, as 0.2 yo Joseph McKey.3
ResearchNote*Research Note of 21 August 2024 re additional records. Nothing useful found. This Joe had brothers James A McKee and Joseph Wallace McKee. This Joseph generally went by Wallace. In the 1870 this person he is clearly spelled out as Joseph. In the 1880 census there's a son Jos or Jas. So what gives - two James or two Josephs as brothers. Weird.
