Move* | James moved his residence from Texas to Altus, Oklahoma in 1921.6 |
Census1930* | James and Sophronia appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Altus, Jackson Co., Oklahoma, enumerated 10 April 1930, as 51 yo steam railway car inspector James & 50 yo wife Sophronia McKee. James's children 17 y o J. B. and 13 yo Eunice were listed as living with them.7 |
Census1940 | James appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of 621 North Benson, Altus, Jackson Co., Oklahoma, as 62 yo MKT Railroad car inspector widower father-in-law James B McKee in the household of his son-in-law & daughter Tommie P & Eunice E Stone. Tommie & Eunice's 4 yo daughter Shirley Stone was also living in the household. James's WWII draft card of 1942 shows the 'person who will always know where you are' as Edith McKee, living at this 621 North Benson address. It's possible that Tommie and Eunice have moved out by 1942 and that James has married for a third time. More likely the draft card is a sloppy enumeration and Edith McKee should read Eunice Stone.8 |
Death* | James died on 24 March 1943 at his home at 621 North Benson in Altus, Jackson Co., Oklahoma, at age 63, "suddenly".2,6,1 |
Burial* | He was buried at Altus Cemetery in Altus, Jackson Co., Oklahoma. Find A Grave provides headstone photo.2 |

Samuel Walter Smith1,2
M, #6059, b. 19 January 1886, d. 12 September 1942
Birth* | Samuel, son of James B. Smith and Martha Ellen "Mattie" McKee, was born on 19 January 1886 in Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas. The 1900 census says Jan 1885. His Find A Grave memorial, WWI draft card and CA Death Index all say 19 Jan 1886. Find A Grave claims he was born in Stone Co., Arkansas. That doesn't fit with any other known facts. His SS App says he was born Stoneygrove, TX which is surely a typo or mis-read of Honey Grove. His Death Index entry lists his mother as Beard. I believe he got his mother's maiden name (McKee) confused with his maternal grandmother's (Baird).4,5,2,3 |
Census1900 | Samuel appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 5, Fannin Co., Texas in the household of his mother, Martha Ellen "Mattie" McKee, as 15 yo son Samuel Smith.3 |
Census1910 | Samuel appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Pct. 1, Grayson Co., Texas in the household of his mother, Martha Ellen "Mattie" McKee, as 22 yo son Samuel W Smith.6 |
Marriage* | He married Mary Lnu before 12 September 1918. Date based on Sam's WWI draft card which lists wife Mary Smith as next of kin.1 |
Residence* | Samuel and Mary resided in Grapevine, Tarrant Co., Texas, on 12 September 1918.1 |
Census1920* | Samuel and Mary appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 1, Grayson Co., Texas, as 34 yo City job works laborer Samuel W & 26 yo cotton mill weaver Mary Smith in the household of 51 yo widow Lila Loflin.7 |
Census1930 | Samuel and Mary appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Sherman, Grayson Co., Texas, enumerated 18 April 1930, as 43 yo highway road hand S(*****) & 37 yo cotton factory weaver Mary Smith. Mary's 52 yo widowed mother Mary Jackson was listed as living with them.8 |
Death* | Samuel died on 12 September 1942 in San Joaquin Co., California, at age 56.4,9 |
Burial* | He was buried at Arbor Vitae Cemetery in Madera, Madera Co., California. Find A Grave provides headstone photo. I don't find his wife Mary in this cemetery.9 |

It's interesting that at the same address we find Mrs. Helen J Smith, housewife, Democrat. Perhaps this is a different Herbert C Smith.7 |
