Richard C. Griffin1

M, #9091, b. circa 1833
Last Edited7 Oct 2022
Birth*Richard was born circa 1833 in Tennessee.2
Marriage*He married Frances Alabama "Fannie" Arnn, daughter of Abihu Aaron Arnn and Margaret Reynolds "Peggy" Blair, on 31 August 1854 in Conway Co., Arkansas. My preliminary research suggests their children were Lydia A (1855-b1901, d. bef. 1900 census), John W (1857-1860), Margaret (1858-1884), and Georgia Griffin (1861-1901) but the record is sketchy at best.1,3
Census1860*Richard and Frances appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Griffin Twp., Pope Co., Arkansas, enumerated 6 September 1860, as 27 yo Richard C. and 22 yo Fannie Griffin. Their children 4 yo Lydia A and 2 yo Margaret were listed as living with them, as well as 22 yo James Arsen(sp?). Perhaps James is Frances' brother James, though he's already enumerated with his parents, also at age 22 yo.
Note also that Pope Co and Conway Co are adjacent to each other. It's a bit odd that each has a Griffin Township.2

Birth*Julia, daughter of John J. "Squire" Campbell and Julia Johanna Mack, was born circa 1860 in Missouri, possible range is 1857 to 1861. Find A Grave claims birthstate of Tennessee but if the moves noted in her father's obit are correct her birthstate would be Missouri. Her Find A Grave memorial says Texas. Her marriage record with Starr says Springville, MO. There's no such place so likely it should read Springfield.
Some records list her simply as Ida but I believe she's the 1 yo Julia in the 1860 and 11 yo Ida in the 1870 censuses.4,5,1,6
Census1860Julia appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Wilson Twp., Greene Co., Missouri in the household of her parents, John J. "Squire" Campbell and Julia Johanna Mack, as 1 yo Julia Campbell.1

Last Edited15 Oct 2022
Birth*William, son of Berryman C. Gardner and Mary S. Blair, was born on 29 September 1840 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. His death certificate says he was born 29 Sep 1840. His Find A Grave memorial 28 Sep but no headstone to confirm. The 1850 census suggests birthyear ca 1836.1,3,4
Census1850William appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Southern Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia in the household of his parents, Berryman C. Gardner and Nancy "Ann" Bennett, as 14 yo Wm Garner.4
Census1860William appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Southern Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia in the household of his parents, Berryman C. Gardner and Nancy "Ann" Bennett, as 20 yo William B Gardner.5
Marriage*He married Elizabeth D. "Betty" Vasser on 19 September 1865 in Halifax Co., Virginia. The VA Marriage database has two entries for this couple. One claims a date of 19 Sep 1860. The other, which I've cited, 01 Sep 1865. The dates are too far apart for one to be the bond and the other the marriage. My preliminary research suggests their children were Daniel Berry (1869-1955, m1 Marie A Collie 1893, m2 Nancy Glenn Marshall 1920; middle name Benj on death cert), Wm Edward (1873-1947, m. Doral "Dora" D Lnu), and Benjamin Berryman Gardner (1878-1916, m. Mary Lyle Keeling 1903).6
Census1870*William and Elizabeth appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Subdivision north of Dan River, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 25 July 1870, as 29 yo William D & 29 yo Betty D Gardner. Their 1 yo son Daniel B Gardner was listed as living with them.7
Census1880William and Elizabeth appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Dan River, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 10 June 1880, as 40 yo Wm B & 43 yo Elizabeth D Gardner. Their sons 10 yo Daniel B, 7 yo Wm Edward, and 3 yo Benj B Gardner were listed as living with them.8
Census1900William and Elizabeth appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Tunstall Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, as 60 yo father W B & 63 yo mother Elizabeth D Gardner in the household of their son and daughter-in-law 26 yo W E & 27 yo Dora L Gardner.9
Census1910*William appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of 820 N. Main St., Danville, Virginia, as 65 yo widower father W B Gardner in the household of his son & daughter-in-law 36 yo livery stable proprietor W E & 35 yo wife Dora L Gardner.10
Death*William died on 22 July 1916 in Danville, Virginia, at age 75, of pellagra. For reasons unknow his Find A Grave memorial says 27 Aug. His death certificate is clearly 22 Jul.1,3
Burial*He was buried on 23 July 1916 at Leemont Cemetery in Danville, Virginia.11,3

Nancy "Ann" Bennett1,2,3

F, #9107, b. circa 1815
Last Edited9 Oct 2022
Birth*Nancy was born circa 1815 in Virginia. I'm assuming her name is Nancy and that Ann is a nickname. Her middle initial is iffy - J, G and C all appear in source documents. The Bennett surname is from her marriage record to Berryman and may be a previous husband's.1
Marriage*She married Berryman C. Gardner on 2 February 1844 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.4,1
Census1850*Nancy and Berryman appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Southern Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 2 December 1850, as 45 yo farmer Berryman and 35 yo Ann Garner. Their children Mary Ann, Nancy S., William Berryman, Lucy J., Martha C. and Benjamin T. were listed as living with them.1
Census1860Nancy and Berryman appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Southern Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 1 October 1860, as 60 yo Berry C & 35 you Ann J Gardner. Their children Nancy S., William Berryman, Lucy J., Martha C. and Benjamin T. were listed as living with them. Ann hasn't aged since the 1850. Impressive. There were also five blacks, presumably slaves though listed as laborers, in the household.2
Census1870Nancy and Berryman appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Subdivision north of Dan River, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 14 July 1870, as 70 yo Berry and 60 yo Nancy G Gardner. Their son Benjamin T. was listed as living with them. Elizabeth Robertson Blair and family are three doors up. This time Nancy aged 25 years in one census!3

Last Edited15 Oct 2022
Birth*Elizabeth was born between 1836 and 1841 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, d/o Daniel Vasser. The second entry in same database has her birthyear as 1841. Find A Grave's date is 1840 with maiden name Verser.1,2,3
Marriage*She married William Berryman Gardner, son of Berryman C. Gardner and Mary S. Blair, on 19 September 1865 in Halifax Co., Virginia. Mary Lyle Keeling 1903).2
Census1870*Elizabeth and William appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Subdivision north of Dan River, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 25 July 1870, as 29 yo William D & 29 yo Betty D Gardner. Their 1 yo son Daniel B Gardner was listed as living with them.4
Census1880Elizabeth and William appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Dan River, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 10 June 1880, as 40 yo Wm B & 43 yo Elizabeth D Gardner. Their sons 10 yo Daniel B, 7 yo Wm Edward, and 3 yo Benj B Gardner were listed as living with them.5
Census1900Elizabeth and William appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Tunstall Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, as 60 yo father W B & 63 yo mother Elizabeth D Gardner in the household of their son and daughter-in-law 26 yo W E & 27 yo Dora L Gardner.6
Death*Elizabeth died in 1903.3
