Census1900* | Lewis and Iola appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Wilmington, New Castle Co., Delaware, at 228 W. 19th St., enumerated 15 June 1900, as 32 yo travel agent L D & 29 yo Iola A Armstrong. Their son Marvil G. was listed as living with them.8 |
Death* | Lewis died on 12 June 1900 at age 32. Odd that his headstone death date is 3 days before the 1900 census enumeration. Iola's obit says he died 4 years after they were married in 1895, suggesting 1903. This makes more sense.4,7 |
Burial* | He was buried at Lombardy Cemetery in Wilmington, New Castle Co., Delaware. Joint headstone photo w/ wife Iola is available at Find A Grave.4 |

Rev. Benjamin T. String1,2
M, #7044, b. 31 December 1835, d. 12 February 1918
Birth* | Benjamin was born on 31 December 1835 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, s/o David String & Eliza Cox. Ancestry's Brindle Family Tree gives his surname as Sterling.3,4 |
Marriage* | His first marriage was to Amanda "Jennie" Durrell between 1856 and 1857, date inferred from their 3 yo daughter Mary in the 1860 census. This marriage is a bit of a long shot but Ben's name is perfect, his daughter Mary is spot on (based on later censuses) though the age is a bit off. His occupation in the 1860 of M.E. minister clinched it for me.5 |
Census1860* | Benjamin and Amanda appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Sadsbury Twp., Chester Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 9 June 1860, as 25 yo M. E. preacher Benj T & 26 yo Amanda String. Their daughter Mary Eliza was listed as living with them.5 |
Milit-BegE* | Rev. Benjamin T. String entered into the military at Dowington, Chester Co., Pennsylvania, on 15 June 1863. He enlisted this date and was mustered in on 19 June at Harrisburg. He was an infantry private in Co. B, 29th Pennsylvania Militia.6 |
Marriage* | His second marriage was to Margaret Jane Groves, daughter of Jonathan Groves and Elizabeth Rebecca Vandegrift, on 24 April 1866. Find A Grave claims they were married in 1856 but I believe that was the approximate year of Benjamin's m1 to Amanda Lnu.1,7 |
Census1870* | Benjamin and Margaret appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Middletown, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 12 July 1870, as 38 yo Methodist minister Benjamin & 28 yo wife Jennie String. Their children Mary Eliza, Emma Malhen and William P. "Willie" were listed as living with them.8 |
Marriage* | His third marriage was to Sarah Catherine Leighton in 1877.9,10,11 |
Census1880* | Benjamin and Sarah appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Ashton, Delaware Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 14 June 1880, as 44 yo Methodist minister Benjamin T & 46 yo wife Sarah C String. Their children Emma Malhen, William P. "Willie", Robert C. and George C. were listed as living with them, as well as 44 yo governess Hannah C Goldsmith.12 |
Estate-Will | Benjamin was named executor and an heir in the will of Sarah Catherine Leighton, his wife, dated 26 June 1899 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, receiving all personal and real estate absolutely.13 |
Census1900 | Benjamin and Sarah appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Conshohocken, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania, at 9 N. Elm St., enumerated 1 June 1900, as 64 yo minister Benjamin & 66 yo wife Sarah C String. Hannah T. Goldsmith, now a boarder, was still living with them.14 |
Census1910 | Benjamin and Sarah appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at 2558 N. 30th St., enumerated 19 April 1910, as 74 yo clergyman Benj T & 76 yo wife Sarah K String.15 |
Death* | Benjamin died on 12 February 1918 at 2436 N. 30th in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at age 82, of myocardial degeneration.3,16,4 |
Burial* | He was buried on 15 February 1918 at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. Photo of joint headstone with both wives available at Find A Grave. The service was at the M.E. Church at 29th & York Streets.3,17,16,4 |
Estate-Misc* | Benjamin left $1,000 to the Preachers' Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The Evening Public Ledger article states he left private bequests of $18,100.18 |
