Abraham "Abe" Whetstone1

Last Edited19 Apr 2024
Birth*Abraham was born on 18 August 1861 in Ohio, s/o John Whetstone & Adai Adams.2,3,4
Marriage*He married Helen Maranda "Hela" Sarber, daughter of Albert Sarber and Margaret Nellans, in 1886. Married 14 years in the 1900 census with none born, none living.5,1

Census1910Abraham and Helen appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Harrison Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana, enumerated circa April 1910, as 47 yo farmer Abe & 46 yo wife Helia Whetstone. Jerk enumerator didn't date any of their pages.6
Census1920Abraham and Helen appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Harrison Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana, enumerated 7 January 1920, as 58 yo farmer Abe & 57 yo wife Hela Whetstone. Jerk enumerator didn't date any of their pages.7

This enumeration is really odd. Abe's m1 Hela died in 1924 and he m2 Hela's sister Mary in 1926. Yet his wife here is listed as Hella. Mary's son Albert from her m1 to Charles Franklin Sears is the step-son.9

Last Edited4 May 2024
Birth*Susannah, daughter of Zachariah Cook and Martha "Matty" Andrick, was born in 1804 in Greenbrier Co., West Virginia.3
Census1820Susannah is probably one of the two females age 16 to 25 listed in the household of her father, Zachariah Cook, in the 1820 Federal Census of Greenbrier Co., Virginia (now West Virginia).4
Census1830Susannah is probably the female age 20 to 29 listed in the household of her father, Zachariah Cook, in the 1830 Federal Census of Greenbrier Co., Virginia (now West Virginia).5
Marriage*She married Jacob Zimmerman on 29 December 1831 in Greenbrier Co., Virginia (now West Virginia). My preliminary research suggests their children were Rufus Zimmerman (1832-1869, m. Mary Ann Schoonover), William Zimmeran (1833-1882, poss m1 Lucinda, m. Eliza Lemon 1855 VA), Betsy Zimmerman (1835- ), Henry Zimmerman (1836-1886, m. Virginia Mossbarger), John Zimmerman (c1840- ), Lydia Zimmerman (1842-1922, m. John L Cain), Nancy Jane Zimmerman (c1844- , m. Fnu Lewis betw 1860-1870), and Mary E "Polly" Zimmerman (c1846- ).
Susan was called daughter Susan Zimmerman in her father's Rev War pension app papers.
The Hidden Roots tree at Ancestry alleges Jacob had an m1 to Susannah Schoonover with issue Barney (1823- ), Lucy (1824- ), and Eliza Zimmerman (1831- ). There's no marriage record cited. There's an 1840 census for Botetourt Co for a Jacob Zimmerman who might be our Jacob's father. There's much that doesn't quite add up so I've not entered this marriage or issue.1,6,7
Census1850*Susannah and Jacob appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Marion Twp., Pike Co., Ohio, enumerated 26 July 1850, as 41 yo farmer Jacob & 44 yo Susanah Zimmerman. Their children 16 yo William, 14 yo Rufus, 12 yo Harry, 10 yo John, 8 yo Lydia, 6 yo Nancy, and 4 yo Mary Zimmerman were listed as living with them.8
Census1870Susannah and Jacob appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Clay Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 28 July 1870, as 64 yo farmer Jacob & 65 yo Susan Zimmerman. Their 25 yo housekeeper (daughter) Nancy Lewis was listed as living with them, as well 4 yo Anna Zimmerman & 2 yo James Zimmerman, both currently unidentified.
Next door is 36 yo William Zimmerman, probably their son, his wife Lucinda and their two children. Another probable son 33 yo Henry Zimmerman lives just below William with his wife Virginia and four children.9
Census1880Susannah and Jacob appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Clay Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 23 June 1880, as 80 yo retired farmer Jacob & 76 yo wife Susan Zimmerman. Their grandchildren 14 yo Annie & 12 yo James Zimmerman were listed as living with them.
Sons William and Henry and their families now live on the previous census page a couple of hourses above Jacob & Susan.10
Death*Susannah died in July 1891 in Cainsville, Harrison Co., Missouri.3
Burial*She was buried at Fairview Cemetery in Cainsville, Harrison Co., Missouri. Find A Grave provides no headstone photo.3

Birth*John, son of Zachariah Cook and Martha "Matty" Andrick, may have been born ca. 1790. This per Ancestry's Kathy Bruner Jones tree without citation.
Census1820John is probably the male age 26 to 44 listed in the household of his father, Zachariah Cook, in the 1820 Federal Census of Greenbrier Co., Virginia (now West Virginia).2
Death*John died after 30 January 1846.1
ResearchNote*Research Note of 3 May 2024 re iffy sources. I'm not convinced by the information currently available. Sources, such as they are, disagree or are outright contradictory. The name John Cook is unfortunately common so knowing which records refer to this John is challenging.
When did he live? His birth year is probably in the 1777-1790 range. If the 1850-1870 censuses generally attributed to him are accurate he was born ca. 1789 in Virginia. His death was in the 1871-1880 range. No Find A Grave memorial or estate docs found to confirm a date.
Marriages. There's an 1821 marriage in West Virginia (Virginia at the time) for John Cook and Nancy Martin. There's an 1831 marriage in Ohio for John Cook and Nancy Surran. One compelling marriage record is for Elizabeth Cook Park, d/o John Cook & Nancy Martin. She m. J B Kirk in 1885 in Iowa. The problem here is Nancy's birthyear is shown as 1834, three years after father John's alleged marriage to Nancy Surran. Conclusion - the Nancy Surran marriage is a different John Cook.
John and Nancy Martin's children probably included Martin Zachariah Cook (1823-1875, perhaps m. Mahala Halterman 1844; 7 children listed in his will; prob Find A Grave memorial 37990395), Willis Cook (c1828- , m. Prudence Vansky 1849; had son Zachariah; prob. Find A Grave memorial 77489064), Elizabeth Cook (1833-1914, Daggett-Park; m1 Fnu Park, m2 J W Kirk 1885), Jonathan L Cook (1840- ), Martha Cook (1851- ), and Zachary Cook (1855- ). There are several others who show up in pre-1850 censuses, unnamed of course, who are missing in 1850. The two children, Martin & Willis, fit well in the 1830 & 1840 censuses but I find no sources directly tying them to their alleged parents. The latter four children are all named in one or more of the 1850-1870 censuses. As mentioned above, only Elizabeth has a source specifically tying her to John & Nancy.
John's FSTrees entry, ID KPSJ-Q6V, lists two other children whom I find nowhere else - Nancy E Cook (1819-1870) and Letitia Cook (1831-1873) who may fit into 1830-1840.

Last Edited4 May 2024
Birth*Michael was born in 1799, s/o George Gall & Susannah Nicholas.2
Marriage*He married Nancy Cook, daughter of Zachariah Cook and Martha "Matty" Andrick, on 16 April 1824 in Greenbrier Co., West Virginia. Nancy was called daughter Nancy Gall in her father's Rev War pension app papers.
My preliminary research suggests their children were John Zachariah Gall (1825-1862, Co. E, 41st Illinois Infantry; bur. Fairview Cem., Floyd Co., IN), Lydia Gall (1826-1866, m. Nicholas Funk; bur. Funk Cem., Pike Co., OH; 10 children at Find A Grave), Rufus Estel Gall (1828-1916, m. Wilhelmin Paulina Schultz 1853; bur. Polk City Cem., Polk Co., IA), David B? Gall (c1830- ), Rhoda Gall (1834-1917, m. Charles Kelly 1855), Jacob Andrick Gall (1832-1865, served with Co. H, 176th Regiment, Ohio Infantry), Henry Nicholas Gall (1836-1923, m. Mary Ann McMonigle Dec 1869; 5 kids at Find A Grave), Perry Gall (c1839- ), and Martha Gall (c1842- ).3,1,4
Census1830*Michael appeared on the 1830 Federal Census with a household listed as 110001-100011 as 30-39 yo Michl Gall. His wife Nancy is likely the 30-39 yo female, son John Zachariah the 5-9 yo male, daughter Lydia the under 5 yo female, and son Rufus the under 5 male. The female 20-29 yo is unidentified.5
Occupation*Michael was appointed postmaster on 21 April 1840 at Beaver Twp., Pike Co., Ohio.6
Census1840Michael appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Pike Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 2121001-011001 as 40-49 yo Michael Gall. His wife Nancy is likely the 30-39 yo female (enumerated same age as in 1830). The children are a perfect fit insofar as we understand them. Son John Zachariah the male 15-19, dau Lydia 10-14, son Rufus 10-14, son David 10-14 (see below - this guy is a mess), dau Rhoda 5-9, son Jacob 5-9, son Henry Nicholas under 5, and son Perry under 5.
     Son David is puzzling. In 1840 he's 10-14 yo. In 1850 he's 18 yo. In 1860 he's got a middle initial B and is 19 yo.7
Census1850*Michael and Nancy appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Marion Twp., Pike Co., Ohio, enumerated 24 July 1850, as 57 yo farmer Michael & 57 yo Nancy Gall. Their children 21 yo Rufus, 18 yo David, 16 yo Rhoda, 14 yo Nicholas, 11 yo Perry, and 8 yo Martha Gall were listed as living with them.8
Census1860Michael and Nancy appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Beaver Twp., Pike Co., Ohio, enumerated 5 June 1860, as 61 yo farmer Michael & 61 yo Nancy Gall. Their children 24 yo Henry N, 21 yo Perry, 18 yo Martha A, and 17 yo David B Gall were listed as living with them.9
Census1870Michael and Nancy appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Beaver Twp., Pike Co., Ohio, enumerated 25 June 1870, as 71 yo farmer Michael & 71 yo Nancy Gall. Their children 33 yo Nicholas and 22 yo Mary Gall were listed as living with them. Mary is son Nicholas's wife, born in NY, married the previous December.10
Census1880Michael appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Beaver Twp., Pike Co., Ohio, as 81 yo father farmer Michale Gall in the household of his son & daughter-in-law Henry N & Marianne Gall. Michale was sick with diarrhea and died two days later.11
Death*Michael died on 9 June 1880.2
Burial*He was buried at Beaver Union Cemetery in Beaver, Pike Co., Ohio. Find A Grave provides joint headstone photo with wife Nancy.2

Jacob Zimmerman1,2

Last Edited4 May 2024
Birth*Jacob was born on 12 January 1806 in Botetourt Co., Virginia.3
Marriage*He married Susannah "Susan" Cook, daughter of Zachariah Cook and Martha "Matty" Andrick, on 29 December 1831 in Greenbrier Co., Virginia (now West Virginia). My preliminary research suggests their children were Rufus Zimmerman (1832-1869, m. Mary Ann Schoonover), William Zimmeran (1833-1882, poss m1 Lucinda, m. Eliza Lemon 1855 VA), Betsy Zimmerman (1835- ), Henry Zimmerman (1836-1886, m. Virginia Mossbarger), John Zimmerman (c1840- ), Lydia Zimmerman (1842-1922, m. John L Cain), Nancy Jane Zimmerman (c1844- , m. Fnu Lewis betw 1860-1870), and Mary E "Polly" Zimmerman (c1846- ).
Susan was called daughter Susan Zimmerman in her father's Rev War pension app papers.
The Hidden Roots tree at Ancestry alleges Jacob had an m1 to Susannah Schoonover with issue Barney (1823- ), Lucy (1824- ), and Eliza Zimmerman (1831- ). There's no marriage record cited. There's an 1840 census for Botetourt Co for a Jacob Zimmerman who might be our Jacob's father. There's much that doesn't quite add up so I've not entered this marriage or issue.4,5,1
Census1850*Jacob and Susannah appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Marion Twp., Pike Co., Ohio, enumerated 26 July 1850, as 41 yo farmer Jacob & 44 yo Susanah Zimmerman. Their children 16 yo William, 14 yo Rufus, 12 yo Harry, 10 yo John, 8 yo Lydia, 6 yo Nancy, and 4 yo Mary Zimmerman were listed as living with them.6
Census1860*Jacob appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Clay Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 16 June 1860, as 50 yo farmer Jacob & 52 yo Susan Zimmerman. Their children 27 yo farmer William, 25 yo farmer Rufus, 19 yo Lydia, 16 yo Nancy, and 14 yo Polly Zimmerman were listed as living with them.7
Census1870Jacob and Susannah appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Clay Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 28 July 1870, as 64 yo farmer Jacob & 65 yo Susan Zimmerman.
Another probable son 33 yo Henry Zimmerman lives just below William with his wife Virginia and four children.8
Census1880Jacob and Susannah appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Clay Twp., Harrison Co., Missouri, enumerated 23 June 1880, as 80 yo retired farmer Jacob & 76 yo wife Susan Zimmerman. Their grandchildren 14 yo Annie & 12 yo James Zimmerman were listed as living with them.
Sons William and Henry and their families now live on the previous census page a couple of hourses above Jacob & Susan.9
Death*Jacob died on 30 January 1890 in Cainsville, Harrison Co., Missouri, at age 84.3
Burial*He was buried at Fairview Cemetery in Cainsville, Harrison Co., Missouri. Find A Grave provides no headstone photo.3

Clarissa "Clary" Buffenbarger1

Last Edited8 May 2024
Birth*Clarissa is claimed by the John Selsor tree at Ancestry without citation to have been born 1777, d/o Peter Buffenbarger & Mary Shobe, and that her name was Clarissa "Glory" Buffenbarger. In her marriage record her surname is spelled Clarry Buffrnburgh.1
Marriage*She married Judge Jacob Andrick, son of Christian Andrick and Elizabeth Lnu, on 1 May 1819 in Madison Co., Ohio. I've seen nothing that convinces me the Jacob who married Clary is our Jacob so I'd take this marriage with a grain of salt.1
Death*Clarissa is claimed by the John Selsor tree at Ancestry without citation to have died in 1820 shortly after her marriage.

Last Edited9 May 2024
Birth*Margaret, daughter of Judge Jacob Andrick and Mada Smith, was born on 12 June 1823 in Ross Co., Ohio.2
Census1830Margaret is probably the female under age 5 listed in the household of her father, Judge Jacob Andrick, in the 1830 Federal Census of Vermillion Co., Indiana, though she's enumerated one bracket too young.3
Census1840Margaret is probably the female age 15 to 19 listed in the household of her father, Judge Jacob Andrick, in the 1840 Federal Census of Green Co., Wisconsin Territory.4
Marriage*She married Doctor Franklin Satterlee on 9 May 1844 in Wisconsin. My preliminary research suggests their children were Louis Andrick Satterlee (1849-1918, m. Delia E McKinley 1875; 4 children at Find A Grave), Edwin Frank Satterlee (1849- ), Ella M Satterlee (1852-1937, m1 Howard Adin Mann 1873, m2 John Woodworth 1882; no children at Find A Grave), John Charles Satterlee (1854-1932, m. FatherJudge Jacob Andrick1 b. 21 Aug 1782, d. 23 Jan 1864
MotherMada Smith1 b. 20 Aug 1806, d. 18 Oct 1862
Last Edited9 May 2024
Birth*Lillis, daughter of Judge Jacob Andrick and Mada Smith, was born on 24 November 1831.2
Census1840Lillis is probably the female age 5 to 9 listed in the household of her father, Judge Jacob Andrick, in the 1840 Federal Census of Green Co., Wisconsin Territory.3
Census1850Lillis appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Clarno, Green Co., Wisconsin in the household of her parents, Judge Jacob Andrick and Mada Smith, as 18 yo Lillis (indexed Rillis) Andrick.4
Marriage*She married Dr. John Harrod Couch on 9 April 1854 at Lillie's home in Monroe, Green Co., Wisconsin. My preliminary research suggests their children were Mada Couch (1855-1934, m. Arthur A Chapman; res. Ft. Scott 1900), William A Couch (1856-1860), Otto David Couch (1859-1933, m. Mamie Rainier 1885), John Harrod Couch Jr (1863-1897, m. Connie A Ambrose 1891), Mina Julette "Birdy" Couch (1866-1929, m. Victor Harris Harkey; res. Ft. Scott 1900), and Winette "Wina" Couch (1870-1942, m. C H Poole; res. Hampton, IA 1900).5,6,7
Move*Lillis and John moved their residence from Wisconsin to Fort Scott in 1857.
Lillie's obit in Fort Scott Daily Tribune and Fort Scott Daily Monitor of 01 Feb 1900 states, "She came here in the early summer of 1857, about two months after her late husband had trusted his destiny to the frontier town of 100 people".
John's Find A Grave memorial states incorrectly, "Dr. Couch, his wife and 2 children came to Fort Scott in 1867 accompanied by his father-in-law, J. Andrick, wife and 4 children. They came in two wagons and a carriage from Wisconsin. For a long time Dr. Couch was the only physician for miles around. Given for submission by Ida Daniels"
Lillie's parents Jacob & Mada died in 1864 and 1862 respectively so obviously they did not move to Kansas in 1867.
Jacob & Mada and family were in Wisconsin in 1850 and in Kansas Territory in 1860 which confirms the 1857 date is at least in the ballpark.5,7
Census1860Lillis and John appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Bourbon Co., Kansas Territory, enumerated 31 August 1860, as 32 yo physician John H & 27 yo Lillis Couch. Their children 5 yo Made A, 3 yo William A, and 0.6 yo Otto D Couch were listed as living with them.8
Census1870Lillis and John appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Scott Twp., Bourbon Co., Kansas, enumerated 18 June 1870, as 43 yo physician John H & 39 yo Lillis Couch. Their children 15 yo Mada, 10 yo Otto B, 6 yo John H, and 4 yo Minnie Couch were listed as living with them.9
Census1880Lillis and John appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Scott Twp., Bourbon Co., Kansas, enumerated 19 June 1880, as 53 yo physician John H & 48 yo wife Lillis Couch. Their children 20 yo Otto D, 16 yo John, 14 yo Mina, and 9 yo Wina Couch were listed as living with them.10
Death*Lillis died on 31 January 1900 at the family homestead 110 Broadway in Fort Scott, Bourbon Co., Kansas, at age 68, of bronchial pneumonia.5,2
Burial*She was buried on 2 February 1900 at Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Scott, Bourbon Co., Kansas. Find A Grave provides joint headstone photo with sons John Harrod Jr and Otto Dwight Couch.2,5
