Jacob Thomas1

M, #6673, b. 1770, d. 1823
Last Edited6 Oct 2022
Birth*Jacob was born in 1770 in Montgomery Co., Virginia Colony, New England, s/o Japhet Thomas and Mary Drake.1
BioNote*Biography Note: 1791 - Jacob is the first of his family to appear in Loudoun Co., VA. This year, David Thomas Sr. pays his tax along with his sons David Jr., Philip, and George Thomas. He also pays for a Stephen Purcely, as he had the previous year.
1792 - The first "Jeffrey" here was probably Japhet and the second was probably Jacob: Jeffrey, Jeffrey, Griffith, Phinehas, and Evan Thomas. ["J" is probably Jacob].
1793 - Jeffrey, J., Griffith, Phinehas, and Evan, all appeared on the Loudoun Co. VA tax list. Was "J." Japhet or Jacob? Did Jeffrey pay for the others? 5 tithes.
1794 - Oct. 17, 1794 - Loudoun Co. VA Personal Property Tax: Japhet Thomas & Phinehas & Evan & Jacob 4 tithes and 4 (horses?) - - 4 4 1.
1795 Aug 5 - Japhet Thomas & Sons J., P., E., & John 5 tithes 5 horses.
1796 10 Aug - Japhet Thomas & Sons Phinis (Phineas), Evin (Evan), & Jacob 4 & 5 (horses?). 11 Aug - John 1 & 1. 1796 31 May - John Thomas 1 & 1. Japith Thomas & Sons Phinaz (Phineas) & Jacob & Aron (Evan) 5 & 6. 6 June - Griffith Thomas.
1800: Named as a brother in Griffith's 1800 will. He appeared in court in person, so was in Loudoun Co.
1807 District of Timothy Taylor. Joseph Thomas & Jesse [both sons of Owen] & Farnsworth 3 2 - 8. Japhet, Phenias (Phineas), Jacob, & Ben Ra-(Ramey?), Evan Thomas & M. Haynes 6 3 - 8. George Thomas [son of Owen], John Thomas [son of Japhet], McKnight, & William Anders 3 - 0 4.
1808 No taxes collected in 1808.
1809 The Third District, McKnights. Jacob & Evan Thomas 2 1 - 2. Phinehas (Phineas) & Japhet Thomas and Jack FREE NEGRO 3 2 - 5
Joseph Thomas & Jesse & Farnsworth. David Thomas 1 - - 2. John Thomas 1 - - 5. George Thomas 1 2 - 3.
1809-1810: Jacob's brother Phineas married in 1809 and in 1810, it appears their father Japhet was living with Jacob next door to Jacob's brother John: Japhet apparently died sometime before 1820, when Jacob and Ruth were living across the county line in Fredericks County with five daughters.
1822 Loudoun Co., VA personal tax list. Jacob and his brother Evan were not listed in Loudoun, but their brothers Phinehas and John Sr. and his son John Jr. were on 21 and 27 Mar in Book A.
Jacob doesn't appear again on the Loudoun county tax lists.1
Marriage*He married Ruth "Little Ruth" Thomas, daughter of Owen Thomas and Martha Davis, circa 1808 in Loudoun Co., Virginia.1,2
Census1810*Jacob appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Waterford, Loudoun Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 01021-102 as 26-44 yo yo Jacob Thomas. Bev Golden, in her Find A Grave entry for Jacob Thomas, speculates that the male >45 is Jacob's father Japhet, and that the other male 26-44 is Jacob's brother Evan. She neglects to mention the second female 16-25. Ruth may be one bracket too young. There is a Jno Thomas next door enumerated as 00111-00001.3,1
Census1820Jacob appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Front Royal, Frederick Co., Virginia, with a household listed as 000101-4101 as >45 yo Jacob Thomas. The male 16-25 is unidentified.4,1
Death*Jacob died in 1823 in Loudoun Co., Virginia. Avery claims between 1825 and 1832.1,2
Burial*He was buried at Ketoctin Baptist Church Cemetery in Purcellville, Loudoun Co., Virginia.1
