surname Bassett
?, #4306
Note* | Forebears writes: Nick 'the dwarf' = Old French basset, 'a dwarf, or very low man' (Cotgrave), a diminutive of basse. (2) Local, 'de Basset,' of Norman origin. It is probable that most of the existing Bassetts can claim a local descent. Golda Bassat, Cambridgeshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls. Ela Bassett, Southamptonshire, ibid. Kelco Basset, Oxfordshire, ibid. Bass (q.v.) = the French diminutive suff. -et. — Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison
(English, French) Descendant of little Bass or Bassa (short); the short man. — Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith
Old French, basset, "a dwarf or very low man." Cotgrave. This family, who became great barons and gave their name as a suffix to Drayton Basset, Winterbourne Basset, &c., are said to have been of humble origin. One of the family appears in Domesd. as an undertenant. Ordericus Vitalis speaks of Ralph B. as having been raised by Henry II. from an ignoble stock, and from the very dust-"de ignobili stirpeacde pulvere." The B.'s of Beaupre, however, claim descent from Turstin B., the Conqueror's grand falconer. B.L.G. — Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower
The ancient and distinguished family of Bassett was represented in the county as far back as the reign of Edward III., when Sir William Bassett, a gallant officer in the French wars, owned the estate of Tehidy and the town of Redruth, the men of Redruth being his vassals. The ancient Bassetts of Cornwall, Devonshire, and Staffordshire were of the same stock, and were connected on the female side with the Plantagenets; in fact, in the reign of James I. one of the Devonshire family made some pretensions to the English crown (P.) — Homes of Family Names in Great Britain (1890) by Henry Brougham Guppy
The Bassetts were an ennobled family in mediaeval time; they held the posts of constable of Dover and lieutenant of Dover Castle in the reigns of John and Edward III. The rector of Tunstall in 1368, and the rector of Luddenham in 1580, bore this name; and in Elizabeth's time a Bassett held a messuage in the village of Cowdham, in Dartford deanery (H.) The Kentish Bassetts are now mostly gathered around Sevenoaks. — Homes of Family Names in Great Britain (1890) by Henry Brougham Guppy
The Bassetts belong to an ancient and distinguished Staffordshire family, members of which frequently occupied the office of high sheriff in the 15th and 16th centuries (S.) Bassett is the name of places in Leicestershire and Notts. Basset is, however, an old English surname, and was represented in the 13th century in Devonshire, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Essex, Leicestershire, Notts, etc. (H. R.) The ancient Bassetts of Staffordshire are said to come from the same stock as the Bassetts of Cornwall and Devon. — Homes of Family Names in Great Britain (1890) by Henry Brougham Guppy.1 |
