ResearchNote* | Research Note of 5 April 2020 re Rootsweb's VANDERGRIFT-L Archives. That website no longer exists. In it, Streeter writes, "probably m. Jacob Hagwot. Jacob and Hannah Haughhead of Makefield, Bucks Co., PA are included in the 1743 deed of Leonard-2 Van der Grift". Cox claims she married Andrew Duow but King responds, "Davis's 1905 article cited earlier stated that Anneken married Andrew Douw but this was disputed by Lewis Cook in "The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record," Vol. 64, pp. 410-12 (year 1933.)" |

Rebecca Lnu1,2
F, #39, b. circa 1687, d. after 1754
Birth* | Rebecca was born circa 1687, date estimated.1 |
Marriage* | She married Jacob Vandegrift Sr., son of Leendert Jacobse "Leonard" Vandegrift and Styntje (Christina) Elsworth, in 1707. King says Jacob m2 Sarah Lnu and son Leonard's christening record supports that. Cox says Rebecca survived him; this may not be a contradiction, but divorce would be unlikely. FSTrees lists 14 children of Jacob & Sarah but provides citation only for Leonard, so I'm sticking w/ King's list.1,2 |
Death* | Rebecca died after 1754. Although she was not mentioned in Jacob's will dated 12 Apr 1750, Cox says she survived him and m2 Jacobus Van Zandt.2 |

King gives the location as Flatbush, Find A Grave as Midwoud. Same place according to Theodora.com. Also variously known as Midwout and Medwoud. The sources can't agree on 13 March or 13 May. The relatively more primary sources favor 13 May.1,2 |

Barth, "The Van Sant Family of New Utrecht and Bucks Co., Pennsylvania", New York Genealogical & Biographical Record Vol.127, no. 3, p. 129 (1996): 127:136. The Davis History of Bucks County also says 08 Nov. But Historical Society and Compiiled Marriages say 08 Sep. FamilySearch (MKXM-RVC) claims Garret Stoffelse Vanzant Sr was a son of Albert & Rebecca but the baptismal sources cited shows Garret's father's name as Jacob, not Albert.3,4,5,1 |
LandDeal | They and Jacob purchased 500 acres of land and 100 acres of marsh "if to be had", from Commissioners of Property, by grant, in New Castle County on 16 March 1708.6,7 |

Leonard Vandegrift1,2,3,4
M, #46, b. 1709, d. before 3 November 1750
Baptism* | Leonard was baptized in 1709 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania Colony (now Delaware), New England. DAR claims Bucks Co.1,2 |
Marriage* | His first marriage was to Mary Jeton, daughter of Lewis Geton, circa 1729. King specifically says Christopher Sr (52) was son of Leonard & Mary on pg. 1356 in the chapter on Rebecca (King) Vandegrift. Then, on pg. 1431 in the chapter on Ann (King) Vandegrift, he says that Lewis was son of Christopher and Mary Jeton. It stands to reason that any children with birthdates between Christopher and Lewis were also Mary Jeton's.5,6,4 |
Marriage* | His second marriage was to Sarah Lnu between 1735 and 1750. DE Bible Records shows Sarah as mother of all seven of Leonard's children. King clearly states that Mary was mother of the first four (Christopher, Abraham, Leonard & Isaac) but is non-commital as to which of Leonard's wives was mother to the last three children (Lewis, Sarah and Mary). Cox also disagrees with the 'all Sarah' claim of DE Bible.7,1,2,3,4 |
Residence* | Leonard resided in Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Pennsylvania Colony (now Delaware), New England, on 16 October 1750.3 |
Estate-Will* | Leonard Vandegrift left a will dated 19 October 1750 at New Castle Co., Pennsylvania Colony (now Delaware), New England, naming wife Sarah and eldest son Christopher as co-executors. Sons Leonard, Lewis, Abraham and Isaac and daughters Mary and Sarah were also named. DE Bible, King & DE Wills all give date as 16 Oct, but it's clearly 19 Oct in the actual will.7,3,2,1 |
Death* | Leonard died before 3 November 1750 in Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Pennsylvania Colony (now Delaware), New England.7 |
Estate-Probate* | Leonard's will was probated at New Castle Co., Pennsylvania Colony (now Delaware), New England, on 3 November 1750. King claims date was 9 November.3,2,1 |

Mary Jeton1,2,3
F, #51, b. circa 1709, d. after 18 February 1732
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 15 September 2009 re Mary's name. Cox gives her name as Jane Johonnis, but clearly the same person as he also mentions a son by this marriage, Christopher.3 |
Birth* | Mary, daughter of Lewis Geton, was born circa 1709, date estimated.2 |
Marriage* | She married Leonard Vandegrift, son of Christoffel (Christopher) Vandegrift and Sarah Druith, circa 1729. It stands to reason that any children with birthdates between Christopher and Lewis were also Mary Jeton's.5,1,3 |
Estate-Will | Mary was mentioned in the will of Lewis Geton dated 18 February 1732 at Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Pennsylvania Colony (now Delaware), New England.1,6,4 |
Death* | Mary died after 18 February 1732. She is mentioned in her father's will of this date as Mary Vandegrift. The will was administered in 1748 but no mention is made if she was still alive at that time.7 |

Christopher Vandegrift Sr.1,2,3,4
M, #52, b. 8 June 1731, d. 8 June 1816
Birth* | Christopher, son of Leonard Vandegrift and Mary Jeton, was born on 8 June 1731. Tatnall & Scharf record death at age 85 years; the date of 8 June for both birth and death looks suspicious. DE Bible lists Sarah Lnu as his mother, not Mary Jeton; that is unlikely since Mary is clearly alive on 18 Feb 1732 when she is called Mary Vandegrift in her father's will. Find A Grave claims 8 June 1732.3,6,7,8,9 |
Estate-Will | Christopher was named an executor in the will of Leonard Vandegrift dated 19 October 1750 at New Castle Co., Pennsylvania Colony (now Delaware), New England.1,2,3,5 |
Marriage* | He married Rebecca King, daughter of Francois "Francis" King Sr. and Christian Vandegrift, on 4 June 1756. Christopher and Rebecca were 1st cousins, once removed.10,3,6,7,4 |
BioNote* | Biography Note of 1777: King writes, 'in 1777 during the Revolutionary War, British soldiers damaged or confiscated proterty on their farm with Christopher later filing a damage claim for 100 pounds with the state (noted in "Delaware Archives" Vol. III, p. 1196)'. The story of Christopher's loss during the Revolutionary War is confirmed on p. 272 of Henry C. Peden, Revolutionary Patriots of Delaware 1775-1768, (Westminister, MD:Family Line Publications, 1996.)4 |
CensusNF2* | Christopher appeared on the 1782 Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, with a household listed as 202-002. See Research Note for analysis of who the extra female >18 might be.11 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note re 1782 census. Analysis of the second female over 18 yo in the 1782 census and conclusion that it is Lydia 2240. The prime candidates are daughters, mothers, sisters, and sisters-in-law of Christopher and Rebecca. * Christopher & Rebecca's daughters. No. There are none. * Christopher's mother, Mary Jeton. No. She prob. died bef. 1741 based on estimated m2 year of his father's marriage to Sarah Lnu. * Rebecca's mother, Christian Vandegrift King. No. She died bef. 1778. * Christopher's sister Sarah (57), w/o Garret Krueson. Unlikely. There's a Garret Cruson in the tax assessment for Appoq. * Christopher's sister Mary (58), w/o Titus Van Hicklen. Unlikely. She's likely a widow as there's a tax assessment for Mary VanHeekel in StGeo. * Rebecca's sister Johannah (78), w/o Robt Haughey (85). Unlikely. A Robt. Haughey is in the tax assessment & census for StGeo. * Rebecca's sister Catherine (83), w/o John Hyatt (90).Unlikely. A John Hyatt is in the tax assessment & census for StGeo. * Rebecca's sister Christian (82), w/o Evan Evans (89). Unlikely. An Evan Evans is in the tax assessment for Mill Creek. * Rebecca's sister Ann (62), w/o Lewis vdG (55). No. We know Lewis is alive and in the tax assessment for Red Lion. That census is lost. * Christopher's sister-in-law Lydia (2240), widow of his brother Leonard II (56). Maybe. We don't know if she's still alive. There's no Lydia or Leonard estate in the listings. * Christopher's sister-in-law Elizabeth King (60), widow of his brother Abraham (53). No. She's in the tax assessment of Red Lion as Abraham estate. * Rebecca's sister-in-law Fnu 84(), w/o Marinus (45). No. She is believed to have died 1742-1747. Her husband has definitely died. * Rebecca's sister-in-law Ann (86), w/o Francis II (79). No. Francis is in the tax assessment & census. * Rebecca's sister-in-law Catherine (87), w/o Leonard (80). No. Leonard is in the tax assessment & census. * Rebecca's sister-in-law Elizabeth (88), w/o Peter (81). No. Peter is in the tax assessment & census.12 |
TaxList* | Christopher Vandegrift Sr. appeared on a tax assessment of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Pennsylvania (now Delaware), New England, enumerated on 27 November 1782, enumerated Christopher VanDegrift with an assessment of £55.13 |
Census1800* | Christopher appeared on the 1800 Federal Census of Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, with a household listed as 00101-01101-0-8 as >45 yo Christopher Vandegrift. Only Christopher & Rebecca are perfect matches; Chris J. is 7 yo older than the third position male, and we've no one to account for the two young females. Since none of Christopher & Rebecca's four sons is dead yet I don't see these three as grandchildren. Most of Christopher's siblings, and all of Rebecca's, are dead so they could be nieces & nephews from either side. Christopher's brother Lewis is living next door.14,15 |
Marr-Bond | Christopher provided surety for the marriage bond of Christopher J. Vandegrift Jr. and Jane Ford on 10 March 1803 at New Castle Co., Delaware.16,17 |

Estate-Codicil* | He made a codicil on 7 November 1810 at New Castle Co., Delaware. In this codicil Christopher gave 14 acres of woodland to his son Christopher Jr.19 |
Death* | Christopher died on 8 June 1816 in Saint Georges Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, at age 85, aged 75 years.20,21,3,7 |
Burial* | He was buried at Saint Georges Cemetery in Saint Georges, New Castle Co., Delaware.9,3,7 |

Leonard Vandegrift II1,2,3
M, #56, d. from 29 August 1769 to 2 October 1769
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 22 April 2023 re Bible records. Old Bible Records Copied From Bibles Owned by Delaware Families, aka BibDAR, vol. 4, pp. 239-40, doesn't give a birthdate for Leonard but places his birth between brothers Christopher (b1732) and Lewis (b1740). BibDAR says his parents were Leonard (1709-1750) and Sarah (n.d.) but the dates suggest he was son of Leonard's m1 Mary Jeton. FamilySearch (KTZL-6SZ) has it all wrong. They show this Leonard as married to Ruth Sankey. Ruth in fact was Leonard King Vandegrift's m2. King has nothing on Leonard II except his name.6,2 |
Birth* | Leonard, son of Leonard Vandegrift and Mary Jeton, was born.6,2,1 |
Marriage* | He married Lydia Lnu.3,7,8 |
