Sarah Hulda Phelps1

F, #1474, b. 27 June 1823, d. 15 January 1897
Last Edited23 Jan 2025
Birth*Sarah was born on 27 June 1823 in Indiana. FSTrees (LHKK-DHS) claims she's d/o John Phelps & Sally Polly Gibbs, sister of William Phelps.1
Marriage*Her first marriage was to Hosea Jessup on 25 January 1838 at Switzerland Co., Indiana. License dated 25 Jan 1838 by Howard Patton, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Switzerland County. Rev. Isaac Jessup perfomed the ceremony the same day. Marriage registered 22 Feb 1838.2,1
Census1840Sarah is probably the female age 15 to 19 listed in the household of her husband, Hosea Jessup, in the 1840 Federal Census of Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana.3
Marriage*Her second marriage was to John Carpenter on 8 August 1842 at Dearborn Co., Indiana.4,5
Marriage*Her third marriage was to Jeremiah Downey on 12 August 1845 at Ohio Co., Indiana.6,7,8,9
Census1850*She and Jeremiah Downey appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana, enumerated 5 October 1850, as 24 yo farmer Jeremiah & 26 yo Sarah H Downey. Their children Asa William Jessup, Cpl. Daniel J. Carpenter, Andrew Clark Downey and Alfred Ross Downey were listed as living with them. Amos Downey & family live directly above. James & Mary Seborn Downey live two doors above.10
MoveSarah and Jeremiah moved their residence from Switzerland County to Ohio County in 1850. It is possible there's another explanation for the two 1850 census enumerations. Cotton Twp. & Ohio Co. share a border. I've so far been unable to determine where Div. 2 was located. If the border shifted during the interval between enumerations, or if the border was poorly defined, or if one of the enumerators didn't know where he was it could explain this.10,11
Census1850Sarah and Jeremiah appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Div. 2, Ohio Co., Indiana, enumerated 30 October 1850, as 25 yo farmer Jeremiah & 24 yo Sarah Downey. Their children Andrew Clark, Alfred Ross, Asa William and Daniel J. were listed as living with them.11
Census1860Sarah and Jeremiah appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana, enumerated 28 August 1860, as 34 yo farmer Jeremiah & 37 yo Sarah Downey. Their children Asa William, Daniel J., Andrew Clark, Alfred Ross and Sarah Hulda were listed as living with them. Asa Jessup & Daniel Carpenter were also in the household. Asa & Daniel are Sarah's sons from prior marriages.12
Census1870Sarah and Jeremiah appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Sugar Branch, Switzerland Co., Indiana, enumerated 31 August 1870, as 44 yo farmer Jerry & 46 yo Sarah H. Downey. Their daughter Sarah Hulda was listed as living with them. Son Clark & his wife Mary are next door.13
Census1880Sarah and Jeremiah appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana, enumerated 4 June 1880, as 54 yo farmer Jeramiah & 54 yo wife Sarah H Douney. Son Clark & wife Mary are two doors below.14
Death*Sarah died on 15 January 1897 in Switzerland Co., Indiana, at age 73.1
Burial*She was buried at Allensville Cemetery in Allensville, Switzerland Co., Indiana. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.1

Brainard Delbert Curtis1,2

M, #1492, b. 11 October 1881, d. 27 December 1963
Last Edited15 Feb 2023
Birth*Brainard was born on 11 October 1881 in Fulton Co., Illinois.3
Marriage*He married Carrie Winfrey Nickols, daughter of Nathan Nickols III and Sarah Elizabeth Kellough, circa 1902. Married 8 years, first marriage for each, with 2 born and 2 living in the 1910 census.4,2,1
ResidenceBrainard and Carrie resided in Prairie City, McDonough Co., Illinois, in August 1909.1
Census1910*Brainard and Carrie appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Lee Twp., Fulton Co., Illinois, enumerated 23 April 1910, as 28 yo farmer Delbert B & 31 yo wife Carrie W Curtis. Their children Kenneth N. and Claire Brainard were listed as living with them.4
Census1920Brainard and Carrie appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Lee Twp., Fulton Co., Illinois, enumerated 7 January 1920, as 38 yo farmer Delbert B & 40 yo wife Carry W Curtis. Their children Kenneth N., Claire Brainard and Morris L. were listed as living with them.5
Census1930Brainard and Carrie appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Chalmers Twp., McDonough Co., Illinois, enumerated 4 April 1930, as 48 yo farmer Brainard D & 50 yo wife Carrie W Curtis. Their children Claire Brainard and Morris L. were listed as living with them.6
Marr-Divorce*Brainard was divorced from Carrie Winfrey Nickols from April 1930 to 1940. Divorce is assumed because Delbert & Carrie are in the 1930 together, Delbert & Mary in the 1940, but Carrie didn't die until 1944. It's interesting that Carrie shows up in her son Claire's household in the 1940 as widowed. Perhaps there's another explanation.7,6
Marriage*His second marriage was to Mary Emma Mitchell between 1931 and 1940. Marriage date as follows: Delbert is with 1st wife Carrie in the 1930 census but with Mary in the 1940 census.3
Census1940*Brainard and Mary appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Macomb, McDonough Co., Illinois, enumerated 19 April 1940, as 58 yo farmer Delbert & 57 yo wife Mary Curtis.7
