Andrew and Peter are found in the 1900 census in Brenton, Ford, IL, both as servants, 19 & 17 yo respectively. Andrew in the home of Jacob Ehresman and Peter in the home of Frank Stadler. Their ages and birthstates are correct. One oddity - in the 1870 there's a 1 yo female 'Baby'. In 1880 there's a 10 yo male Jesse. Are they both Jesse? If not then Phoebe had 15 children with 14 living in 1900. I believe they are one and the same and gender was incorrect in the 1870. FSTrees claims a couple other children but they don't stand up to any scrutiny.1,5,6 |
Census1870* | Phoebe and Peter appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Cass Twp., Ohio Co., Indiana, enumerated 16 July 1870, as 30 yo farmer Peter & 28 yo housekeeper Phoebe Bradley. Their 1 yo daughter 'Baby' was listed as living with them.7 |
Census1880 | Phoebe and Peter appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Sparta Twp., Dearborn Co., Indiana, enumerated 10 June 1880, as 33 yo farmer Peter & 33 yo wife Phoebe J Bradley. Their children 10 yo Jesse, 9 yo Emma, 8 yo Madison, 7 yo Margarett, 6 yo Samuel, 4 yo Eliza, 2 yo Charley and 0.3 yo Conley Bradley were listed as living with them.8 |
Census1900 | Phoebe and Peter appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Salt Creek Twp., Decatur Co., Indiana, enumerated 10 June 1900, as 52 yo day laborer Peter & 53 yo wife Phoeba J Beadly. Their children 15 yo Rose, 13 yo Thomas, 12 yo Eugene and 7 yo Ellen Beadley were listed as living with them.6 |
Death* | Phoebe died on 8 June 1905 at age 58.3 |
Burial* | She was buried at Downey Cemetery, Ohio Co., Indiana.3 |

Melissa V. Bailey1,2
F, #8533, b. 9 November 1849, d. 23 October 1895
Birth* | Melissa, daughter of Lorenzo Dow "LD" Bailey and Malinda Downey, was born on 9 November 1849 in Indiana. Clearly folks had lost track of when she was born by the time her headstone was carved. It shows the 09 Nov 1851 date. She's 0.8 yo in the 1850 census as Melissa Bailey. Her ages pretty well jive in the following three censuses so I don't believe there was a Melissa-1 who died, followed immediately by Melissa-2. The date should be 09 Nov 1849.3,2 |
Census1850 | Melissa appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Div. 2, Ohio Co., Indiana in the household of her parents, Lorenzo Dow "LD" Bailey and Malinda Downey, as 0.8 yo Malissa Baily.2 |

Census1870* | Melissa and Peter appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Cass Twp., Ohio Co., Indiana, enumerated 13 July 1870, as 25 yo farm laborer Peter & 19 yo Melissa Winn. Their 0.10 yo son John Winn was listed as living with them.6 |

Lewis F. Culp1,2
M, #8535, b. circa 1838
Birth* | Lewis, son of J. David Culp and Susanna Downey, was born circa 1838 in Indiana.1 |
Census1840 | Lewis is probably one of the two males under age 5 listed in the household of his father, J. David Culp, in the 1840 Federal Census of Decatur Co., Indiana.3 |
Census1850 | Lewis appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Div. 2, Ohio Co., Indiana in the household of his parents, J. David Culp and Susanna Downey, as 12 yo Lewis.1 |
Census1860 | Lewis appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Wills Twp., LaPorte Co., Indiana in the household of his parents, J. David Culp and Susanna Downey, as 21 yo Lewis.4 |
Marriage* | He married Lavina Van Dusen on 15 September 1860 in St. Joseph Co., Indiana. My preliminary research suggests their children were Milroy Culp (1861-1943, m. Lena M Smith 1906) and Syren Culp (1866-1900), prob. m. Walter S Campbell in 1889.5 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 23 July 2020 re FSTrees. My analysis is that FSTrees has combined two different men named Lewis Culp. Let's call ours Lewis1 and the other Lewis2. Lewis1 married Lavina VanDusen in 1860 in St. Joe, Indiana. I have not found them in the 1870 or any later censuses, nor any Find A Grave memorials. They are referenced as the parents of a son, Milroy Culp, in records of Milroy's m1 to Anna L VanDusen (a cousin?) and his m2 Lena M Smith. Milroy and Anna had two children, Alice M & Clarence Culp. The family is found together in the 1900 & 1910 censuses. Milroy & Lena had a son Louis. That family is found in the 1920 census, along with Alice's father Benjamin Smith. FSTrees claims Lewis1 & Lavina also had a daughter named Syrene. There is a Syren Culp who married Walter Scott Campbell in 1889 and had a daughter Sylvia. That is well documented, but I have found nothing connecting that Syrene to her purported parents, Lewis1 & Lavina. Lewis2 married Elizabeth Emery in 1867 in St. Joe, Indiana. Lewis2 & Elizabeth are in the 1860 census in Philadelphia. Lewis2 was born in PA and Elizabeth in Ireland. They have four children ranging in age from 2 to 7 in the 1860. That suggests a marriage ca. 1853, not 1867. The same couple is still in Philadelphia in the 1870, 1880, and 1900 censuses, always in Philadelphia. Lewis2's death certificate shows him born 1828 in PA, not ca. 1838 in Indiana as the census record of our Lewis1's parents shows. Elizabeth Emery's entry in FSTrees (ID no. LLHY-9HF) shows two different husbands - Lewis F Culp (ID no. LRSM-JDR, our relative) and Lewis Culp (ID no. LJYN-RJ5, the fellow from Philadelphia.) |

It left the state May 6 for Nashville, Tennessee, where it was equipped, although six companies only were mounted. Elizabeth Downey1
F, #8541, b. 9 January 1849, d. 3 December 1917
Birth* | Elizabeth, daughter of Amos Downey and Matilda Jane Beach, was born on 9 January 1849 in Indiana. Elizabeth's death certificate shows parents as Omer & Matilda Downey. The scan of the certificate is very faint. It's easy to see how a transcriber could get Omer instead of Amos for her father's name. Her Find A Grave memorial had maiden name & surname at death reversed on 25 Jul 2020. A suggested edit is submitted for iit to read Elizabeth Downey Burton.2,3,4 |
Census1850 | Elizabeth appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Shelby Twp., Ripley Co., Indiana in the household of her parents, Amos Downey and Matilda Jane Beach, as 1 yo Elizableth.1 |
Census1860 | Elizabeth appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Otter Creek Twp., Ripley Co., Indiana in the household of her parents, Amos Downey and Matilda Jane Beach, as 11 yo Elizabeth.5 |
Census1870 | Elizabeth appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Versailles PO, Otter Creek Twp., Ripley Co., Indiana, as 20 yo Elizabeth Downey in the household of her brother Anderson Downey; as 24 yo farmer Anderson Downey.6 |
Census1880 | Elizabeth appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Otter Creek Twp., Ripley Co., Indiana in the household of her parents, Amos Downey and Matilda Jane Beach, as 26 yo daughter Elizabeth.7 |
Marriage* | She married David H. Burton between 1880 and 1881. David & Elizabeth were married 19 years in the 1900 census with 2 born and 2 living. Elizabeth is still with her parents in 1880 so a date range of late 1880 to 1881 seems safe. My preliminary research suggests their children were Emma (c1882-a1916, m. Fnu Harrell and widowed by 1910) and Nora A Burton (1883- , m. Eugene L Floyd, m. Fnu Moore). There's also a Freda Burton, 0.8 yo in 1900 and previously assumed to be the d/o David & Elizabeth. In the 1910 census she's with Nora & Eugene Floyd as 10 yo step-daughter, suggesting she was Nora's daughter. It makes more sense that Nora bore Freda at age 16 than that Elizabeth did so at age 51. David's m1 was Elizabeth H Callicott by whom he had at least 7 children. It is Callicott's memorial which is linked to his at Find A Grave.4,8 |
Census1900* | Elizabeth and David appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Shelby Twp., Ripley Co., Indiana, enumerated 15 June 1900, as 75 yo retired David & 51 yo Elizabeth Burton. Their daughters 16 yo Nora A & 0.8 yo Freeta Burton were listed as living with them, as well as one boarder.4 |
Census1910* | Elizabeth appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, as 61 yo widowed mother-in-law Elizabeth Burton in the household of her son-in-law & daughter 41 yo seed store shipping clerk Eugene & 26 yo rooming house matron Nora Floyd. Others in the household include 10 yo step-daughter Freda Burton, 28 yo widowed sister-in-law Emma Harrell, and Emma's daughters (as nieces) 6 yo Kay and 5 yo Elizabeth Harrell. One roomer also in the home. Both Nora and Floyd show this as their m2 marriage.9 |
Death* | Elizabeth died on 3 December 1917 at the home of her daughter Emma Harrell in Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, at age 68. Find A Grave claims Ripley County but her death certificate and death notice in the Indianapolis Star agree on Indianapolis.10,2,3 |
Burial* | She was buried at Holton Cemetery in Holton, Ripley Co., Indiana. Headstone photo is available at Find A Grave.3 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 25 July 2020 re other Elizabeth Downeys. This is not the Elizabeth Downey w/ Find A Grave memorial no. 87492592, who married David Burton and had issue Nora and perhaps Freeda. That woman's death certificate (available at Ancestry) lists her parents as Omer & Matilda Downey, both currently unknown to this researcher. FSTrees also has two women of the same name blended into one record (ID no. KHJ2-Z4L.) |
