Anna Hopper Pennington1

F, #3437, b. between 1859 and 1860
Last Edited13 Dec 2022
Birth*Anna was born between 1859 and 1860 in New Castle Co., Delaware.1
Marriage*She married Louden Marion Pennington, son of Leonard Atkey Pennington and Ann Elizabeth Eaton, on 27 March 1878 at Old Saint Georges Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Married 22 years with 5 born and 5 living in the 1900 census. Find A Grave claims Louden was never married.
     My preliminary research suggests their children were Sydney Wallace (1880-1954, m. Elizabeth C Walker 1907 in Malden, MA), Frank T (c1885- ), Maxwell G (c1891- ), Dorothy (c1894- ) and Philip A Pennington (c1898- ).2,3,4
Census1880Anna appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Chesapeake, Maryland, as 20 yo wife (of Louden) Anna Pennington in the household of her husband's brother & sister-in-law Alrich R. Pennington and Carrie E. Pennington; as 33 yo farmer Aldridge & 25 yo wife Carrie Pennington.5
Census1900*Anna and Louden appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 1 June 1900, as 48 yo stationery framer Lendon? M & 40 yo wife Anna H Pennington. Their children 20 yo stationery clerk Sidney W, 15 yo Frank T, 9 yo Maxwell G, 6 yo Dorothy and 2 yo Philip A Pennington were listed as living with them, as well as one boarder. Occupations are iffy. Louden could be a stationary fireman but is pretty clearly a stationery clerk, whatever that is.3
Marr-Separate*Anna was separated from her husband, Louden Marion Pennington before 22 April 1910. Event and date based on Louden and Anna living in different cities and enumerated separately in 1910. Anna is claiming widowed, Louden claims married. Their remaining children are living with Anna.6,7
Census1910*Anna appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Medord, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 22 April 1910, as 51 yo widow Anna H Pennington. Her children 19 yo grocery wagon driver Maxwell Gi, 16 yo Dorothy and 12 yo Philip A Pennington were listed as living with her. Husband (ex-?) Louden is enumerated in Boston.6
Census1920Anna appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Abington, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 8 January 1920, as 60 yo married Annie H Pennington. Her children 25 yo Dorothy and 22 yo Philip Pennington were listed as living with her, as well as one boarder.8

Samuel H. Farrand1,2

M, #3439, d. 5 November 1903
Last Edited28 Apr 2024
Occupation*Samuel was a blacksmith in 1884 at Delaware.1
Marriage*He married Ruth Elizabeth Pennington, daughter of Leonard Atkey Pennington and Ann Elizabeth Eaton, before 15 September 1884. Date is from birthdate of son Homer Blair Farrand. Marriage also inferred from Ruth's marriage record to Bruff in which she's called Ruth E Pennington Farrand.
My preliminary research suggests their children were Virdelma (1882-1884), Homer Blaine (1884-1935) and Nellie May Farrand (1886- ).2,3
ResearchNote*Research Note of 25 February 1900 re injury? This may be our Samuel (of Coatesville, PA), who was severely injured in a fall on ice, apparently in Wilmington. Coatesville is 24 miles nw of Wilmington.4

Death*Samuel died on 5 November 1903 in Embreeville, Chester Co., Pennsylvania. Not convinced this is our Sam Farrand but it seems likely.5,6
Burial*He was buried on 7 November 1903 at Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington, New Castle Co., Delaware. Find A Grave provides no headstone photo.5,6

Marriage*Their second marriage was to Joseph Wilson Vandegrift, son of Wilson E. Vandegrift and Mary Sipple Downs, on 22 June 1925. This marriage apparently didn't last as Joseph is again solo head of household in the 1930 census. Mary had m1 someone named McDonald who had died 6 years previously.1
Death*Mary died before 28 July 1941. Date based on fact no surviving spouse is listed in her m2 Joseph Vandegrift's obit. Likely she died before 05 Apr 1930 when Joseph is widowed head of household.2
