Census1900Edgar appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 8, Fannin Co., Texas in the household of his parents, Prof. William A. Lee and Jewel Ruth Blair, as 1 yo son Edgar Lee.2
Census1910Edgar appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 6, Fannin Co., Texas in the household of his parents, Prof. William A. Lee and Jewel Ruth Blair, as 12 yo son Edgar N Lee.5
Residence*Edgar resided in The Philippines from 4 January 1918 to 4 April 1918.6
ResidenceEdgar resided in Hong Kong, China, from 6 April 1918 to 14 September 1920.6
BioNote*Biography Note: Edgar's passport applications provide a wealth of interesting information about this man. There are three of them in FamilySearch, dated 1919, 1920 and 1922. There's also a ship passenger list record from 1921.
1919 passport: confirms his birth date & location. His father was William Addison Lee who died before this application. His prior passport no. 7438 was issued at Manila, Phillipines on 2 Apr 1918. His legal domicile is Hong Kong, his permanent residence is Bonham, TX. He left the US on 5 Dec 1917 arriving Hong Kong on 9 Apr 1918. His residences outside the US include,
* Manila, P.I., Jan thru Apr 1918.
* Foochow, China, Apr thru Sep 1918.
* Hong Kong, 23 Sep 1918 to present.
He needed the new passport for commercial business in China, Japan and Indochina.
1920 passport: is nearly identical to his 1919 application. He's now importing for Standard Oil. These passports are more like what we might call a visa today. On page two it says, "Applicant requests that his passport be made good for ONE YEAR as he will be stationed for at least six months at a station seven hundred miles from the nearest American consulate".
1921 passenger list: shows Edgar Nye Lee departing Hong Kong on S.S. Empress of Russia, 28 Apr 1921, scheduled to arrive Vancouver, BC on 16 May 1921. It confirms birth date, place and permanent residence in Bonham.
1922 passport: is on a new form. It again confirms birth and his father. He last left the US on 1 Oct 1921 (he'd been home less than 5 months) for Singapore. He is heading back to Singapore and expects to be home within two years.4,7,8
Occupation*Edgar was an 'assistant' for Standard Oil Co. of NY on 29 March 1919 at Hong Kong, British Empire Colony.4
ResidenceEdgar resided in Haiphong, Indochina, on 16 September 1920.6
Arrivals*Edgar Nye Lee arrived at Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on 16 May 1921, from Hong Kong aboard ship Empress of Russia, enroute to the US., The Ocean Arrivals database says he arrived at St. John, New Brunswick (now Newfoundland) on this date but that makes little sense. The Empress of Russia was a Canadian Pacific ship and the departure from Hong Kong makes Vancouver much more likely. The images attached to the two databases leave resolution of this unclear.9,10
Marriage*He married Dr. Ambra Pauline Biggs on 1 January 1923 at The Cathedral of St. Andrew in Singapore.11,12
ArrivalsEdgar Nye Lee arrived at New York City, New York Co., New York, on 9 December 1924, from Liverpool, England, aboard ship Carmania., His address in the US was 1415 W. 69th, Los Angeles.13
Death*Edgar died on 24 March 1927 at General Hospital in Straits Settlement, Singapore, at age 28, due to fractured skull from a fall from upper storey of Raffles Hotel.12,1
Burial*He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Texas. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave. Note also same family headstone "Lee", same material and font as his parents. No obit or other info at Find A Grave.
The Singapore record says he was cremated and ashes turned over to his wife Ambra Pauline Lee. His mother Mrs. Ruth Lee was informed of his death by telegraph.1,12

In Irene's brother Joe's obit in the Bonham Daily Favorite of 26 Apr 1924 we find following, "Mrs. Jones Richardson is in receipt of a telegram from Los Angeles stating that the body of her brother, Joe Lee, who was killed in an auto accident there...". In the 1930 census Jones is 35 yo and first married at 24, Irene is 28 with first marriage at 18.6,2,7,8

Birth*Velma, daughter of Prof. William A. Lee and Jewel Ruth Blair, was born on 15 December 1903 in Sash, Fannin Co., Texas. J C Magouirk, almost certainly her mother's brother-in-law, was the informant on the birth certificate.1,6
Census1910Velma appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 6, Fannin Co., Texas in the household of her parents, Prof. William A. Lee and Jewel Ruth Blair, as 6 yo daughter Velma Lee.2
Census1920Velma appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Bonham, Fannin Co., Texas in the household of her mother, Jewel Ruth Blair, as 16 yo daughter Velma Lee Lee.7
ResearchNote*Research Note of 19 September 2021 re her surname. It's Evans in her marriage record with Bailey V Winter.
There's a 30 yo Velma E Evans in Los Angeles in the 1930 census who may be this person. Her age is off by 3-4 years but birthstate is correct with TX. She's listed single, not divorced or widowed.
In the 1930 census we find in Los Angeles a 33 yo Frank Evans, 26 yo wife Evelyn (b. TX), with daughters Pauline & Patricia. Unfortunately the same family shows up in Inglewood ten years later and ten years older. Since Velma was married to and living with Winter by this time the Frank Evans family doesn't work.

Residence*Velma resided in Culver City, Los Angeles Co., California, on 19 July 1963, as Mrs. Velma Winters.8
Death*Velma died on 21 September 1988 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California, at age 84. Her Find A Grave memorial says she died in Culver City.6,9
Burial*She was buried at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, Los Angeles Co., California.9
