George Henry Palmer1
M, #4623, b. 29 January 1848, d. 5 March 1926
Birth* | George, son of Samuel L. Palmer and Frances Louisa Means, was born on 29 January 1848 in Memphis, Shelby Co., Tennessee. Means says 1847.2,3,4 |
Census1850 | George appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Jefferson Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas in the household of his parents, Samuel L. Palmer and Frances Louisa Means, as 2 yo George Palmer.3 |
Census1870 | George appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Jefferson Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas in the household of his mother, Frances Louisa Means, as 22 yo George H. Palmer.5 |
Marriage* | He married Laurah C. Steen on 2 November 1870 in Jackson Co., Arkansas. Married 29 years with 6 born and 3 living in the 1900 census, 37 years with 3 & 3 in the 1910. |My preliminary research suggests their children were Oda Lena (1874-1916, m. John F Young), Samuel Tilden (1876-1937, m. Edna V Wolfe), and Maggie Cordelia Palmer (1879-b1900). I don't buy the idea that they had a 4th child, Nellie. See Research Note this topic.6 |
Census1880* | George and Laurah appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Bird Twp., Jackson Co., Arkansas, enumerated 7 June 1880, as 32 yo Geo H & 26 yo Laura C Palmer. Their children Oda Lena, Samuel Tilden and Maggie C. were listed as living with them, as well as 12 yo orphan Jane Gibson.7 |
Census1900 | George and Laurah appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of T4N R4E, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, enumerated 25 July 1900, as 52 yo George H & 46 yo Laura C Palmer. No children listed.8 |
Census1910 | George and Laurah appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Chickasaw Twp., Pontotoc Co., Oklahoma, enumerated 28 April 1910, as 62 yo George H & 57 yo Lorry Palmer. Their children Oda Lena and Samuel Tilden were listed as living with them. This is a bizarre enumeration. Oda's age is about 10 years too low, Sam's is 13 years too low. Furthermore Sam and wife Edna are enumerated separately with their 6 yo son Lester, Oda and husband Frank Young are also enumerated elsewhere. So who are Ida and Sam T? Given the order of enumeration (George, Laura, Ida, Sam, Nellie) I don't buy the claim by some that there's a daughter named Ida, in addition to Oda, nor that there were two sons named Sam T. There are a lot of boarders surname Nail continuing onto the next census sheet living with George & Laurah.9 |
Census1920 | George and Laurah appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Okemah Twp., Okfuskee Co., Oklahoma, enumerated 6 February 1920, as 72 yo George & 66 yo Laura Palmer.10 |
Death* | George died on 5 March 1926 in Okemah, Okfuskee Co., Oklahoma, at age 78. The Find A Grave memorial says 03 March but the included obit says 05 March. Headstone only reads 1926.2 |
Burial* | He was buried at Highland Cemetery in Okemah, Okfuskee Co., Oklahoma. Headstone photo & obit available at Find A Grave. Woody Guthrie is also buried in this cemetery.2 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 21 June 2019 re FSTrees claims. FSTrees (entry for Nellie Palmer (1892-deceased), ID no. LJ5F-YXK) claims a daughter Nellie (Nelley) who married John E Wright on 24 Dec 1921 in Haywood, North Carolina. The sources cited are not compelling. North Carolina is odd. The 1930 census for Oconalufty, Swain, North Carolina, has a 49 yo John E & 37 yo Nellie N Wright in but that Nellie was born in NC, not AR. |

On that date orphan court records of New Castle Cunty, Delaware (New Castle Co., Del., O. C. Hugh Andrew McClelland1
M, #4648, b. 1759, d. 1825
Birth* | Hugh, son of Lt Col. John B. McClelland and Martha Dale, was born in 1759 in Pennsylvania Colony, New England. WikiTree Profiles entry for Hugh Andrew McClelland (1759) claims 1759 in Pennsylvania without citation|.1 |
Marriage* | He married Charlotte Lnu in 1779 in Pennsylvania. Randolph gives bride's name as Elizabeth Watson, but Young's deed clearly shows Hugh's wife as Charlotte. Young's information suggests Elizabeth's father John may have m1 Elizabeth Watson. Very confused. Hugh & Charlotte may have had a son Hugh, born in Pennsylvania, and others born in Ohio.2,1 |
Residence* | Hugh and Charlotte resided in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, on 28 December 1801.2 |
Move* | Hugh moved his residence from Fayette County to Paint Twp., Ross Co., Ohio after 28 December 1801, 'shortly after' per Young.2 |
Death* | Hugh died in 1825.1 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 3 July 2016 re two Hugh McClellands. They're easily confused. We may have the wrong one. Following text copied from, http://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/mcclelland/452/.
The Hugh you probably have is Hugh Andrew? McClelland?Charlotte m. Hugh McClelland, moved to OH in 1802/4; lived in Paint Township, Ross Co. and owned land and went to church in Highland Co., OH.
I believe the Hugh A. McClelland, son of John, died in Stark Co., OH in 1825 and was a private in the Revolutionary war.
Although both Hughs fit into the same timeframe, due to the record of their deaths, one from war records, and the other from a will, and also due to the different wives and children, I do not believe that they are the same.
It is possible, at this time, that Hugh of Hugh and Charlotte, was one of 10 children of a William McClelland, who immigrated from Ireland, and moved to Royal Co. North or South Carolina.Again, there is no record of this, just LDS listings and their own estimated date of birth for him, as he fits into the family.3 |
