MotherMargaret Nellans2,3 b. 8 Oct 1841, d. 3 Oct 1870
Last Edited20 Apr 2024
Birth*Mary, daughter of Albert Sarber and Margaret Nellans, was born on 27 August 1870 in Mentone, Kosciusko Co., Indiana.4,5,1
Census1880Mary appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Franklin Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana in the household of her parents, Albert Sarber and Amelia Ann "Millie" Garrison, as 9 yo Mary Sarber.1
Marriage*Her first marriage was to Charles Franklin Sears on 25 June 1892 at Indiana. My preliminary research suggests their children were Ray Sears (1895-1927, m. Rosabel Gilmore 1917) and Albert Sears (1899-1952).6,5
Census1900*Mary and Charles appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Franklin Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana, enumerated 16 June 1900, as 30 yo day laborer Charles F & 29 yo wife Mary Sayers. Their children 4 yo Ray and 0.7 yo Albert Sayers were listed as living with them.7
Census1910Mary and Charles appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Tippecanoe Twp., Marshall Co., Indiana, enumerated 6 May 1910, as 40 yo truck farm carpenter Charles F & 39 yo wife Mary M Sayers. Their children 14 yo Ray and 10 yo Albert Sayers were listed as living with them.8
Marr-Divorce*Mary was divorced from Charles Franklin Sears before 19 January 1920. Date based on Mary showing divorced in the 1920 census of this date. Find A Grave says Charles m2 Charlotte May Kost in 1921.9,10
Census1920*Mary appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Mentone, Kosciusko Co., Indiana, enumerated 19 January 1920, as 49 yo divorcée Mary Sarber. Her 20 yo son Albert Sears was listed as living with them.9
Marriage*Her second marriage was to Abraham "Abe" Whetstone on 28 August 1926 at Berrien Co., Michigan.11,5
Census1930*Mary and Abraham appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Harrison Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana, enumerated 2 May 1930, as 67 yo farmer Abe & 66 yo wife Hella Whetstone. 30 yo step-son Albert Sears was listed as living with them. This enumeration is really odd. Abe's m1 Hela died in 1924 and he m2 Hela's sister Mary in 1926. Yet his wife here is listed as Hella. Mary's son Albert from her m1 to Charles Franklin Sears is the step-son.12
Census1940Mary and Abraham appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Harrison Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana, enumerated 13 April 1940, as 79 yo farmer Abe & 69 yo wife Mary Whetstone. Mary's 40 yo divorced son Albert Sears was listed as living with them.13
Death*Mary died on 3 May 1947 in rural, Kosciusko Co., Indiana, at age 76, of jaw cancer.4,5
Burial*She was buried on 6 May 1947 at Mentone Cemetery in Mentone, Kosciusko Co., Indiana. Find A Grave provides headstone photo & uncited marriage date.4,5
