Lucinda A. "Lucy" McFarland1

F, #9002, b. 29 January 1847, d. 22 June 1885
Last Edited15 Oct 2022
Birth*Lucinda was born on 29 January 1847, d/o William & Martha McFarland.2
Residence*Lucinda resided in Campbell Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, in November 1863, as 28 yo unmarried lawyer Robert A C Mack.3
Marriage*Their first marriage was to Dr. Robert A. C. Mack, son of John Armenius "Jack" Mack and Sarah Virginia "Sallie" Mack, on 14 November 1864. My preliminary research suggests their children were Ellen R "Ella" (b1870- ,m. Daniel B Atteberry 1891 in Springfield), and Sarah Lenora Mack (b1870- ) both infants in their parents' divorce papers of Jan 1869). Both girls are found in the 1870 census with their grandmother Martha McFarland in Campbell, Greene, MO, ages 4 yo and 2 yo respectively, as Ellen and Sarah Mack. FSTrees's entry LD9R-5V7 claims two other children for this couple, Sarah (1868- ) and Jennie (1878- ). There's a 2 yo Sarah living with Martha McFarland in Greene Co in the 1880 census.1
Marr-Divorce*Lucinda was divorced from Dr. Robert A. C. Mack at Greene Co., Missouri, on 26 January 1869. Find A Grave cites Greene County Abstract of Divorce Records MACK, Lucinda/MACK, Robert AC - Final decree January 26, 1869. Book I, P. 277. Plaintiff resumes maiden name Lucinda A McFarland. Defendant RAC Mack awarded care and custody and support of his two infant children, females, named Ellen Mack and Lenora Mack.1
Census1870*Lucinda appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Campbell Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, as 23 yo Lucinda Rainey in the household of her 58 yo mother Martha McFarland. Lucy's daughters 4 yo Ellen and 2 yo Sarah Mack were also in the household. Lucinda's widowed/divorced box is checked.4
MarriageHer third marriage was to Dr. Robert A. C. Mack, son of John Armenius "Jack" Mack and Sarah Virginia "Sallie" Mack, on 25 December 1875 at Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri. My preliminary research suggests their children from this second marriage were Jessie R (1870- ), and Jennie Mack (1878-1909).5
Marr-DivorceLucinda was divorced from Dr. Robert A. C. Mack before 16 June 1880, date based on the 1880 census of this date wherein Lucy is marked 'widowed/divorced'.6
Census1880Lucinda appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Campbell Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, as 33 yo Lucinda A Mack in the household of her 67 yo mother Martha McFarland. Lucy's daughter 10 yo Jessie R Mack was also in the household. Best guess is Lucy was pregnant with Jessie in the 1870 census.6
Death*Lucinda died on 22 June 1885 in Greene Co., Missouri, at age 38.2
Burial*She was buried at McFarland family cemetery in near Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri.2

William Mack Crosthwait1

MotherNancy Constancia Mack2,1 b. 25 Apr 1805, d. 18 Sep 1885
Last Edited14 Oct 2021
Birth*William, son of John Newton "Newt" Crosthwait Sr. and Nancy Constancia Mack, was born on 26 December 1829 in Maury Co., Tennessee.3,4
Census1830William is probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his father, John Newton "Newt" Crosthwait Sr., in the 1830 Federal Census of Maury Co., Tennessee.5
Census1850William appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 11, Lawrence Co., Tennessee in the household of his parents, John Newton "Newt" Crosthwait Sr. and Nancy Constancia Mack, as 20 yo carpenter Wm M Crosswhite.6
Marriage*He married Mary E. McBride on 10 August 1854 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee. My preliminary research suggests their children were Sophronia Ann (1855-1935, m. William Coleman McKissick 1875 Maury, TN), Sarah "Sallie" Angeline (1856-1939, apparently never married), Nancy Josephine (1858-1939, m. James Edward Collier 1877), William Harvey (1860-1953, m. Cleopatra Alwilda Simmons 1889 Parker, TX), John Thomas (1866-1885, d. of pneumonia due to whooping cough), Charles Wesley (1869-1870), Samuel Henry (1871-1871), and 1st Lt. George Edgar Crosthwaite (1873-1959, m. Anna Norton 1907 Lawrence, TN).7,4,3
Census1870*William and Mary appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Dist. 12, Maury Co., Tennessee, enumerated 25 July 1870, as 40 yo farmer W M & 36 yo M E Crosthwait. Their children were all listed with initials only, as were the parents. The children's names (as I currently understand them) and initials were Sophronia Ann (AS), Sallie Angeline (SA), Nancy Josephine (NJ), William Harvey (WH), John Thomas (JS/T), and Charles Wesley (CW) Crosthwait.8
Census1880William and Mary appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Dist. 14, Giles Co., Tennessee, enumerated 10 June 1880, as 50 yo farmer John & 50 yo wife Mary Crossweight. Their children 24 yo Sallie, 22 yo William H, 14 yo John, and 7 yo George Crosthweight were listed as living with them.
Obviously listing William as John is disturbing. But there's much to like about this enumeration - everyone else's names, ages, William's parents' birthstates - all correct.9
Census1900William and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Dist. 11, Lawrence Co., Tennessee, enumerated 25 June 1900, as 70 yo house carpenter William & 65 yo wife Mary E Crusthwait. Their children 43 yo Sallie A and 26 yo George E Crusthwait were listed as living with them.10
Census1910William and Mary appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Summertown, Lawrence Co., Tennessee, enumerated 16 April 1910, as 80 yo farmer William & 75 yo wife Morry E Croseaite. Their daughter 53 yo Sarah A Croseaite was listed as living with them. The handwriting likely does say Crosswait but it's pretty scribbled.11
Death*William died on 23 May 1915 at his home near in Summertown, Lawrence Co., Tennessee, at age 85.12,4,3
Burial*He was buried at Pleasant Garden Cemetery in Summertown, Lawrence Co., Tennessee. Joint headstone photo & obit available at Find A Grave.4

Birth*Mary, daughter of John Newton "Newt" Crosthwait Sr. and Nancy Constancia Mack, was born on 15 November 1831 in Tennessee.2
Marriage*She married Robert Aaron Vorhies on 23 June 1848 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee. License dated 22 June.
Mary has died before the 1860 census. I speculate that the 10 yo Sophronia Voorhies who shows up in the 1860 in the home of Mary's parents is the child of Robert & Mary. She would have been an orphan on her mother's and abandoned on her father's.3,4,2
Census1850*Mary and Robert appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 11, Lawrence Co., Tennessee, enumerated 14 November 1850, as 30 yo farmer R A & 18 yo Mary Vorhies. Mary's parents live next door.5
Death*Mary died on 14 July 1853 in Tennessee at age 21.2

Mary E. McBride1

F, #9022, b. 18 October 1834, d. 5 January 1919
Last Edited14 Oct 2021
Birth*Mary was born on 18 October 1834 in Maury Co., Tennessee, d/o Samuel McBride & Mary Voorhies. Her Find A Grave bio adds, Mary Elizabeth McBride grew up at the stage-coach station and post office which her father, Samuel McBride, operated ten miles northeast of Lawrenceburg on the Military Road.
ref: Crosthwaite Chronicles
.2
Marriage*She married William Mack Crosthwait, son of John Newton "Newt" Crosthwait Sr. and Nancy Constancia Mack, on 10 August 1854 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee. My preliminary research suggests their children were Sophronia Ann (1855-1935, m. William Coleman McKissick 1875 Maury, TN), Sarah "Sallie" Angeline (1856-1939, apparently never married), Nancy Josephine (1858-1939, m. James Edward Collier 1877), William Harvey (1860-1953, m. Cleopatra Alwilda Simmons 1889 Parker, TX), John Thomas (1866-1885, d. of pneumonia due to whooping cough), Charles Wesley (1869-1870), Samuel Henry (1871-1871), and 1st Lt. George Edgar Crosthwaite (1873-1959, m. Anna Norton 1907 Lawrence, TN).3,1,4
Census1870*Mary and William appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Dist. 12, Maury Co., Tennessee, enumerated 25 July 1870, as 40 yo farmer W M & 36 yo M E Crosthwait. Their children were all listed with initials only, as were the parents. The children's names (as I currently understand them) and initials were Sophronia Ann (AS), Sallie Angeline (SA), Nancy Josephine (NJ), William Harvey (WH), John Thomas (JS/T), and Charles Wesley (CW) Crosthwait.5
Census1880Mary and William appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Dist.
But there's much to like about this enumeration - everyone else's names, ages, William's parents' birthstates - all correct.6
Census1900Mary and William appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Dist. 11, Lawrence Co., Tennessee, enumerated 25 June 1900, as 70 yo house carpenter William & 65 yo wife Mary E Crusthwait. Their children 43 yo Sallie A and 26 yo George E Crusthwait were listed as living with them.7
Census1910Mary and William appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Summertown, Lawrence Co., Tennessee, enumerated 16 April 1910, as 80 yo farmer William & 75 yo wife Morry E Croseaite. Their daughter 53 yo Sarah A Croseaite was listed as living with them. The handwriting likely does say Crosswait but it's pretty scribbled.8
Death*Mary died on 5 January 1919 in Crestview, Lawrence Co., Tennessee, at age 84.2
Burial*She was buried at Pleasant Garden Cemetery in Summertown, Lawrence Co., Tennessee. Joint headstone photo available at Find A Grave.2

Robert Aaron Vorhies1,2

M, #9023, b. circa 1820
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Robert was born circa 1820 in Tennessee. Surname also spelled Voorhies.3
Marriage*His first marriage was to Mary L. Crosthwait, daughter of John Newton "Newt" Crosthwait Sr. and Nancy Constancia Mack, on 23 June 1848 at Lawrence Co., Tennessee. License dated 22 June.
Mary has died before the 1860 census. I speculate that the 10 yo Sophronia Voorhies who shows up in the 1860 in the home of Mary's parents is the child of Robert & Mary. She would have been an orphan on her mother's and abandoned on her father's.4,2,5
Census1850*Robert and Mary appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 11, Lawrence Co., Tennessee, enumerated 14 November 1850, as 30 yo farmer R A & 18 yo Mary Vorhies. Mary's parents live next door.3
Marriage*His second marriage was to Nannie E. Burkitt on 23 October 1860 at Maury Co., Tennessee. My preliminary research suggests their children were Eddie W, John William (1862-1933), Cora L, Nannie M, and Mattie W Vorhies.6
ResearchNote*Research Note of 15 October 2021 re Find A Grave. The memorial for Robert Aaron Voorhies (1820-27 May 1911) is no. 132466996. The headstone is for Robt Voorhies, shows death date above and an unreadable age at death. It's unclear how the Find A Grave contributor came up with his middle name or birth year.
Tennessee, U.S., Death Records, 1908-1965 has a death record for Robt Voorhies, 1821-27 May 1911. This Robert is clearly a black man listed on an entire page of blacks. The likelihood of Robert Aaron having been black is zero.
Tennessee, U.S., Deaths and Burials Index, 1874-1955 doesn't say one way or the other about his race. Neither does Tennessee, U.S., Marriage Records, 1780-2002. In the 1850 & 1860 censuses he's white by default as no one on either page has race listed. Son Edward Wesley (by Robert's m2 Nannie Burkett) Vorheis's TX death certificate lists him as white, not colored or mixed.
Bottom line - I believe the Find A Grave memorial is for a different man, is linked to the wrong wife and wrong children.
Robert apparently abandonned his daughter Sephronia soon after the death of his m1 Mary in 1853. By 1860 she was living with her maternal grandparents in Lawrence County.7,1

Sarah Fisher1

Last Edited17 Oct 2021
Birth*Sarah was born in February 1845. Her headstone reads, 'Sarah Weatherley, Former Wife Of JHB Crosthwait'. Did she m2 Fnu Weatherley after JHB's death in 1876 or is Weatherley her maiden name? Find A Grave provides no evidence for her maiden name having been Fisher. Her marriage record to Blair gives her surname as Fisher. The Colbert tree at Ancestry claims her parents were James M Fisher & Susannah S "Susie" Hutson but provides no evidence of same.2
Marriage*She married James Harvey Blair Crosthwait, son of John Newton "Newt" Crosthwait Sr. and Nancy Constancia Mack, on 29 April 1865 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee. My preliminary research suggests their children were James Harvey (1866-1866), Sarah Ella (1869-1923, m. William Martin Foster 1889), Laura Eugenia (1871-1891), Edward Walter (1873-1939, m1 Gertrude Lockhart 1896, m2 Loskie Pennington 1931), and Marvin Bishop Crosthwait (1876-1918).3,4,1
Death*Sarah died on 29 March 1881 at age 36.1
Burial*She was buried at Pleasant Garden Cemetery in Summertown, Lawrence Co., Tennessee. Joint headstone photo available at Find A Grave. Her name on the headstone is Sarah Weatherly. Was she married prevously or is that in fact her real maiden name?.1

Birth*Alice was born on 3 January 1849.2
Marriage*She married Wesley Milton Young Crosthwait, son of John Newton "Newt" Crosthwait Sr. and Nancy Constancia Mack, on 8 November 1867 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee. My preliminary research suggests their children were Thomas Newton (1868-1939) and James Harvey Crosthwait (1872-1905).3,1
Census1870*Alice and Wesley appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Dist. 13, Maury Co., Tennessee, enumerated 4 July 1870, as 20 yo farmer (perhaps) Marion & 22 yo (perhaps) Ann Croswhite. Their 2 yo son Tom Croswhite was listed as living with them. Granted the handwriting is a mess and the names aren't quite right even with a liberal interpretation but the listing still fits pretty well.4
Death*Alice died on 15 November 1876 at age 27.2
Burial*She was buried at Pleasant Garden Cemetery in Summertown, Lawrence Co., Tennessee. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.2
