MotherSarah Ann Bartlett2 b. 10 Aug 1811, d. 26 Mar 1871
Last Edited28 Nov 2024
Birth*Helen, daughter of Leonard Bartlett and Sarah Ann Bartlett, was born on 26 April 1831 in Ohio.1,3
Census1840Helen is probably the female age 5 to 9 listed in the household of her father, Leonard Bartlett, in the 1840 Federal Census of Brown Twp., Knox Co., Ohio.4
Census1850Helen appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Brown Twp., Knox Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, William Parrish and Sarah Ann Bartlett, as 19 yo Hellen Bartlett.5
Marriage*She married John Gregory Byron after 1864. John had another marriage, apparently prior to Helen, with Martha Eliza Myrick (1815-1863). We might assume his marriage to Helen was after 1864 when last child born to John and Martha (per Find A Grave) was born. John and Martha are in the 1860 census of Starrville with children Junior & Carmelia. Marth is buried in Starrville in Jun 1863 according to her Find A Grave entry. If John Webb Byron's birthyear of 1864 is correct then he was definitely Helen Mary's son, not Martha's.6,2,1
Census1870*Helen and John appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Starrville Beat, Smith Co., Texas, enumerated 22 September 1870, as 59 yo farmer John & 38 yo Helen Byron. John's two children from prior marriage, 16 yo Cornelia & 2 yo John Byron were living with them.7
Census1880Helen appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 7, Smith Co., Texas, enumerated 16 June 1880, as 48 yo widow farmer H M Byron. Her son John Webb was listed as living with her, as well as one boarder.8
Census1900*Helen appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 7, Smith Co., Texas, as 69 yo widowed mother H M Byron in the household of her step-son 31 yo farmer Jno P and his 30 yo wife Rosa Byron.9
Death*Helen died on 15 January 1901 in Smith Co., Texas, at age 69.1
Burial*She was buried at Starrville Cemetery in Starrville, Smith Co., Texas. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave. Note brothers James Preston and John Webb are buried in the same cemetery.1

Birth*John, son of Leonard Bartlett and Sarah Ann Bartlett, was born on 10 December 1832. His mother's Find A Grave entry says he was oldest child of Sarah & Leonard.2,3
Census1840John is probably the male age 5 to 9 listed in the household of his father, Leonard Bartlett, in the 1840 Federal Census of Brown Twp., Knox Co., Ohio.4
Census1850John appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Mt. Gilead, Morrow Co., Ohio, as 17 yo John W. Bartlett in the household of David Byron Blue and Wealthy Bartlett; as 36 yo carpenter Daniel B. & 26 you Welthy Blue.5
Death*John died on 7 August 1887 in Smith Co., Texas, at age 54. Note death date matches Bartlett's exactly.2,1
Burial*He was buried at Starrville Cemetery in Starrville, Smith Co., Texas. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave. Note brother James Preston is buried in the same cemetery.2
ResearchNote*Research Note re research conflicts. We know from Norton that George married Ellen Cooper. RFB is mum on this. George & Ellen have a marriage record at FamilySearch which fits the time and space well.
In 1870 we find George & Ellen in Morris, Knox, OH. Next door are John & Annie. Obvious conclusion is that these are the brothers John Webb & George V Bartlett, and that John's wife's name is Ann.
Next consider the Find A Grave entry I believe is John's. He's buried at Smith Co., TX, in 1887.      There's a James Preston Bartlett in same cemetery. The chances of these two not being the brothers in our database is slim.
Next I punch John Bartlett & Annie into FS and find 4 hits for an Orlin J Bartlett, son of same, born 1869 Knox, OH. Nice fit. Orlin's Find A Grave entry has his parents as John Bartlett & Anna K McGugin. Not unexpected. But this father John died in 1892 and is buried at Knox, OH. Birthyear is unknown so no help.
Current conclusion: It seems more likely that the John & James buried in TX are our brothers and the John who married Anna McGugin is someone else.

Birth*James, son of Leonard Bartlett and Sarah Ann Bartlett, was born on 15 February 1837 in Ohio. Bartlett lists two of this name: James P., between George & Josephine, and James Preston last. I've worked it every which way and the only thing that makes sense with the censuses is that they are the same person. Bartlett notes the latter died 25 Jul 1891 and this matches exactly with the James Preston Bartlett buried in Texas.2,3,1
Census1840James is probably one of the three males under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Leonard Bartlett, in the 1840 Federal Census of Brown Twp., Knox Co., Ohio.4
Census1850James appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Brown Twp., Knox Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, William Parrish and Sarah Ann Bartlett, as 14 yo Preston Bartlett.5
Census1860James appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cardington Twp., Morrow Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Robert Maxwell and Sarah Ann Bartlett, as 22 yo Preston Bartlett.6
Death*James died on 25 July 1891 in Smith Co., Texas, at age 54.2
Burial*He was buried at Starrville Cemetery in Starrville, Smith Co., Texas. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave. Note brother John Webb is buried in the same cemetery.2

John Gregory Byron1,2

M, #7967, b. 25 January 1812, d. 3 May 1877
Last Edited30 Mar 2023
Birth*John was born on 25 January 1812 in Virginia.3
Marriage*His second marriage was to Helen Mary Bartlett, daughter of Leonard Bartlett and Sarah Ann Bartlett, after 1864. If John Webb Byron's birthyear of 1864 is correct then he was definitely Helen Mary's son, not Martha's.3,1,2
Census1870*John and Helen appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Starrville Beat, Smith Co., Texas, enumerated 22 September 1870, as 59 yo farmer John & 38 yo Helen Byron. John's two children from prior marriage, 16 yo Cornelia & 2 yo John Byron were living with them.4
Death*John died on 3 May 1877 in Texas at age 65.3
Burial*He was buried at Starrville Cemetery in Starrville, Smith Co., Texas. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.3
