FatherDouglas Baker Carson1 b. 8 Nov 1807, d. 30 Jun 1854

Last Edited8 Apr 2023
Birth*George, son of Douglas Baker Carson and Barbara Torian, was born between 1837 and 1838 in Kentucky.1
Census1840George is probably one of the two males under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Douglas Baker Carson, in the 1840 Federal Census of Trigg Co., Kentucky.2
Census1850George appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Trigg Co., Kentucky in the household of his parents, Douglas Baker Carson and Barbara Torian, as 12 yo George W Carson.1
Marriage*He married Julia McKeithen on 19 February 1874 in Austin, Travis Co., Texas. My preliminary research suggests their children were William Jones (1876-1943, m. Martha Pearl Roberts), Leonora Pickett (1879-1970, m. Caesar Pierre Brosett), Maude Sally (1880-1968, m. Jacob B Blair) and Ethel Baker (1887- , m. Calvin Pope Williams) Carson. Sources for these children not cited in parental tags include Find A Grave memorials for William (41411067) and Leonora (160467067). In both the 1900 and 1910 censuses Julia shows 9 born with 4 living. License date was the 18th.3,4,5
Census1880*George and Julia appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 1, Austin Co., Texas, enumerated 23 June 1880, as 42 yo farmer George W & 29 yo wife Julia A Carson. Their children 3 yo William J and 1 yo daughter Pickie Carson were listed as living with them, as well as 66 yo mother Barbara Murray. Barbara's age and the three states are good but I've been unable to find an m2 marriage to Mr. Murray.6
Death*George died before 11 June 1900, date based on fact wife Julia is listed as widow in the 1900 census of this date.7

Ursula A. "Sulie" Lander1,2

F, #9460, b. October 1834, d. 21 December 1909
FatherAmos Lander2
MotherArabella Torian2 b. 1808, d. 7 Dec 1840
Last Edited23 Sep 2022
Birth*Ursula, daughter of Amos Lander and Arabella Torian, was born in October 1834 in Christian Co., Kentucky. FSTrees says Oct 1834, her headstone says 1835.3
Census1850Ursula appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Trigg Co., Kentucky, as 16 yo Ursula Lander in the household of Douglas Baker Carson and Barbara Torian; as 42 yo merchant D B & 35 yo Barbara Carson.4
Marriage*She married Stephen Moreland Miller on 24 January 1861 at home of William Torian in Christian Co., Kentucky. The William Torian at whose home they were married is likely her uncle, husband of Julia Burbridge. Best I can tell Ursula was an orphan at this time. Witnesses were Mary McCarty, Mary E Lander and James Torian. In the 1900 census Ursula shows 0 born 0 living which pretty well confirms that 'son' John was Stephen's by a prior marriage.5,6
Census1870*Ursula and Stephen appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, enumerated 6 July 1870, as 47 yo grocery clerk Stephen & 35 yo Sula Miller. Fifteen yo John Miller was listed as living with them. His age suggests he was Stephen's son from a prior marriage. Ursula's 1900 census shows 0 born & 0 living which confirms this supposition. Also in the home 48 yo W S Miller, 24 yo Sarah Miller, and one servant on the next sheet.7
Census1880Ursula and Stephen appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, enumerated 17 June 1880, as 56 yo farmer Stephen M & 45? yo wife Ursula Miller. John Miller, 23 yo son, was again listed as living with them.8
Census1900*Ursula appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, enumerated 22 June 1900, as 65 yo widow Ursala Miller.9
Death*Ursula died on 21 December 1909 in Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, at age 75.6
Burial*She was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.1

Marriage*He married Ursula A. "Sulie" Lander, daughter of Amos Lander and Arabella Torian, on 24 January 1861 at home of William Torian in Christian Co., Kentucky. The William Torian at whose home they were married is likely her uncle, husband of Julia Burbridge. Best I can tell Ursula was an orphan at this time. Witnesses were Mary McCarty, Mary E Lander and James Torian. In the 1900 census Ursula shows 0 born 0 living which pretty well confirms that 'son' John was Stephen's by a prior marriage.4,1
Census1870*Stephen and Ursula appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, enumerated 6 July 1870, as 47 yo grocery clerk Stephen & 35 yo Sula Miller. Fifteen yo John Miller was listed as living with them. His age suggests he was Stephen's son from a prior marriage. Ursula's 1900 census shows 0 born & 0 living which confirms this supposition. Also in the home 48 yo W S Miller, 24 yo Sarah Miller, and one servant on the next sheet.3
Census1880Stephen and Ursula appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, enumerated 17 June 1880, as 56 yo farmer Stephen M & 45? yo wife Ursula Miller. John Miller, 23 yo son, was again listed as living with them.5
Death*Stephen died on 28 December 1888 at age 65.2
Burial*He was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.2

Birth*George, son of Stephen Strode Lander and Mary Torian, was born on 24 January 1832 in near Gracey, Christian Co., Kentucky. Find A Grave confirms only year and state.1,2
Census1840George is probably the male age 5 to 9 listed in the household of his father, Stephen Strode Lander, in the 1840 Federal Census of Christian Co., Kentucky.3
Census1850George appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of his parents, Stephen Strode Lander and Mary Torian, as 18 yo George W Lander.4
Marriage*His first marriage was to Sarah A. "Sallie" Summers on 20 October 1857 at Christian Co., Kentucky. Lander says only that she bore George two children and died. Those two, according to Lander, were Albert W (m. Leah Miller) and Sarah (m. Albert McGehee) and those names agree with the census data.5,6,1,7
Census1860*George and Sarah appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 23 August 1860, as 28 yo farmer Geo W & 21 yo Sarah A Lander. Their 1 yo son Albert Lander was listed as living with them. George's parents live next door above.8
Marriage*His second marriage was to Amanda B. Summers on 10 December 1866. The bond date is same as marriage, 10 December. Lander writes that after Sallie's death George 'without wasting much time' married her sister Amanda. She was mother to five additional children, including Ernest Lynwood (m. Minnie Brown), George William Jr., Mary Lucille, Summers (m. Sarah "Sallie" Connoway) and Morton (m. Rose Watterson). Half-brother Albert, George, Summers and Morton are all in Dallas Co, TX in the 1900 census.9,10,1
Census1870*George and Amanda appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 4 June 1870, as 39 yo stable keeper George W & 23 yo Amandy Lander. Their children 11 yo Albert, 8 yo Sallie and 2 yo Ernest Lander were listed as living with them, as well as four black persons : 1 servant, 1 stable hand, and two with no occupation.11
Census1880George and Amanda appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 21 June 1880, as 48 yo commissioned merchant George W & 33 yo wife Amanda Lander. Their children 20 yo Albert, 17 yo Sallie, 12 yo Ernest, 9 yo George and 4 yo Lucille Lander were listed as living with them, as well as two black servants.12

The cemetery file notes the historical name of this African-American Cemetery is Union Benevolent Society Cemetery #5, and that it is also referred to as East Hill Cemetery in some obits.2
ResearchNote*Research Note of 12 August 2019 re was George a preacher? His Find A Grave memorial lists him as Rev. George. The census record supports no such occupation. Instead he's farmer, stable keeper, and commissioned merchant in the 1860-80 censuses.2

Census1860Stephen appeared on the 1860 Federal Census Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of his parents, Stephen Strode Lander and Mary Torian, as 13 yo Stephen Lander.4
Marriage*He married Annie F. Thomas on 18 December 1872 in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky. Bond was dated 14 December. In the 1900 census Annie shows married 27 years with 4 born and 4 living. In the 1910 she shows 6 born, 4 living. My preliminary research suggests their children were Maude Preston (c1873- , m. William F Knapke), Nina S (c1875- ), Edith M (c1877- ) and Maurice Thomas (c1883- ) Lander. The two children born & died between 1900 & 1910 are currently unknown. Maude has a marriage record, otherwise the sources are scarce.5,6,2

MotherMary Torian1 b. 1809, d. 12 Dec 1865
Last Edited10 Apr 2023
Birth*Arabella, daughter of Stephen Strode Lander and Mary Torian, was born in 1849 in Kentucky.3,1,2
Census1850Arabella appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of her parents, Stephen Strode Lander and Mary Torian, as 1 yo Arabella Lander.3
Census1860Arabella appeared on the 1860 Federal Census Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of her parents, Stephen Strode Lander and Mary Torian, as 11 yo Arabella Lander.4
Marriage*She married James W. McGehee on 18 October 1877 in Belleview, Christian Co., Kentucky. Lander writes that James left Arabella a widow with four children : Carl, Jacob, Morton and James McGehee. That doesn't really work since son Carl died in 1879 and son Jacob died in 1882. James didn't die until 1908. The 1900 census shows married 22 years with 4 born and 2 living. Those two would be Morton and James Jr. My preliminary research suggests their children were Carl (1878-1879), Morton M (1880-1919), Jacob (1881-1882) and James W Jr (c1890- ) McGehee. Sources for these children not cited in parental tags include Find A Grave memorials for Carl, Morton and Jacob. All three are buried in same Section 9 of Greenwood Cemetery as their parents.5,1,2
Census1880*Arabella and James appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Bainbridge Mag. Dist., Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 8 June 1880, as 28 yo dry goods merchant James W & 29 yo wife Belle McGehee. Their 0.1 yo son Nameless was listed as living with them. Best guess this was Morton. Also in the home was James' brother 20 yo John Q McGehee and Belle's 38 yo sister Mary Eliza Lander.6
Census1900Arabella and James appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Clarksville, Montgomery Co., Kentucky, enumerated 10 July 1900, as 49 yo merchant J W & 41 yo wife Belle McGehee. Their 10 yo son James W Jr was listed as living with them, as well as one boarder.7
Death*Arabella died in 1920.2
Burial*She was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Clarksville, Montgomery Co., Tennessee, Section 9. Headstone photo reading "Belle, wife of J W McGehee 1849-1920' is available at Find A Grave.2

Birth*Andrew was born on 19 March 1820 in Halifax Co., Virginia.2
Marriage*He married Martha Lander, daughter of Stephen Strode Lander and Mary Torian, on 17 February 1848 in Christian Co., Kentucky. Ten children per Lander, though he lists only 7. Andrew's obit says they had ten children, five sons and five daughters, all of whom survived him. My preliminary research suggests their children were William Stephen (1849-1925), Mary Ann Elizabeth "Bettie" (1851-1933), Orran Otho (1854-a1919), George Lander (1855-1930, m. Susan Alice Rickman), Frank P (1859-1933), Robert Lee (1863-1950, m. Eloise Pilcher Rawlins), Lucy Ellen (1865-1951), Cora Belle (1867-1949), Walter R (1870-1930) and Maud Lander (1872-1959, m. Leslie C Dewberry and perhaps m. Fnu Brewer) Owen. Sources for these children not cited in parental tags include Find A Grave memorials for all but Otho, FSTrees entries for all of them. Marriage*She married George William Lander, son of Stephen Strode Lander and Mary Torian, on 20 October 1857 in Christian Co., Kentucky. Lander says only that she bore George two children and died. Dr. Robert W. Ware1,2

M, #9475, b. 23 September 1831, d. 14 March 1913
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Robert was born on 23 September 1831 in Christian Co., Kentucky. FSTrees (Robert W Ware (1831-1915), ID no. KZWW-GS9) claims without citation that he was from Frankfort, KY, and his parents were James Ware & Joanna Thompson Parish.1
Marriage*He married Letitia Elizabeth "Letty" Lander, daughter of Stephen Strode Lander and Mary Torian, on 21 February 1858 in Christian Co., Kentucky. Married 45 years with 5 born and 4 living in the 1900 census.
My preliminary research suggests their children were Anna Belle "Annie" (c1859-a1919, m. Robert E McRoberts), Mae Ellen (1861-1916, m. Charles Freeborgh), Jennie (c1865-b1880), James Harry/Harvey (1865-1951, m. Lulu L Winfree) and Harry P (c1880-a1919) Ware. Sources for these children not cited in parental tags include Find A Grave memorials for Mae Ellen and James Harry/Harvey, death and marriage records for James as well as easily found census records 1900-1940.3,2,4
Census1860*Robert and Letitia appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 6 August 1860, as 29 yo physician Robt W and 22 yo Letitia Ware. Their 1 yo daughter Anna Ware was listed as living with them.5
Census1870Robert and Letitia appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Dist. 6, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 29 September 1870, as 35 yo physician Robt W and 30 yo Lettie Ware. Their children 11 yo Annie, 10 yo Mary, 5 yo Jennie and 3 yo Harry Ware were listed as living with them, as well as two domestic servants.6
Census1880Robert and Letitia appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 12 June 1880, as 47 yo insurance agent Robtert W and 42 yo Letticia E Ware. Their children 21 yo Anna B, 18 yo May E, 15 yo James H and 12 yo Harry T Ware were listed as living with them.7
Census1900Robert and Letitia appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of South Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 4 June 1900, as 69 yo farmer Robtert W and 62 yo wife Letticia E Ware. Their 32 yo daughter May E Ware was listed as living with them.8
Census1910Robert and Letitia appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of South Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 14 May 1910, as 77 yo farmer R W and 70 yo wife Letitia E Ware. Their 32 yo daughter May E and 30 yo son Harry P Ware were listed as living with them.9
Death*Robert died on 14 March 1913 at Kentucky Pike in near Western State Hospital, Christian Co., Kentucky, at age 81. He died unexpectedly and quite suddenly, before a doctor could be summoned.10,11,1
Burial*He was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky. Joint headstone photo with Letty is available at Find A Grave. Some uncited bio info is also available.1
ResearchNote*Research Note of 17 August 2019 re sons of RW & Letty. The sons are confusing. They were the last two children. James is talked about in his Find A Grave memorial as Harry but his headstone clearly reads Harvey. His age thru the censuses is pretty consistent. His younger brother however is a mess. He's MIA in 1870. In 1880 he's 12 years old as Harry T. In 1900 he's again MIA. In 1910 he's listed as 30 yo son Harry P Ware. My guess is he should be 0.12 yo in 1880, 20 yo in 1900, 30 yo in 1910. His name is likely Harry and his older brother Harvey.

Thomas David Roberts1,2

M, #9476, b. 10 June 1834, d. 16 February 1894
Last Edited23 Sep 2022
Birth*Thomas was born on 10 June 1834 in Kentucky. Lander calls him T. V. Roberts.1
Marriage*He married Susan Ellen Lander, daughter of Stephen Strode Lander and Mary Torian, on 2 May 1861 at home of S. S. Landers in Christian Co., Kentucky. The SS Landers in whose home they were married could be her father or younger brother, most likely her father.
Lander mentions only one son, Phil, 'a model farmer'.
My preliminary research suggests their children were J Wallace (1862-1883), Walter T (1863-1869) and Philip Tandy (1865-1955) Roberts. All three children have Find A Grave memorials linked to Susan. Philip has a death record at FamilySearch.3,4,2,5
Census1870*Thomas and Susan appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Dist. 6, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 28 September 1870, as 36 yo merchant Thomas D & 29 yo Susan E Roberts. Their children 9 yo Wallace and 5 yo Phillip Roberts were listed as living with them, as well as six others, one of whom is listed as a blacksmith.6
Census1880Thomas and Susan appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 12 June 1880, as 44 yo farmer Thomas D & 38 yo wife Ellen Roberts. Their sons 18 yo Wallace and 14 yo Philip Roberts were listed as living with them.7
Death*Thomas died on 16 February 1894 in Gracey, Christian Co., Kentucky, at age 59.1
Burial*He was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.1

Annie F. Thomas1,2

F, #9477, b. circa 1851
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Annie was born circa 1851 in Tennessee.3
Marriage*She married Stephen Strode Lander II, son of Stephen Strode Lander and Mary Torian, on 18 December 1872 in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky. Maude has a marriage record, otherwise the sources are scarce.1,4,2
Census1880*Annie and Stephen appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Bainbridge Mag. Dist., Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 14 June 1880, as 37 yo farmer Stephen S & 28 yo wife Annie Lander. Their children 6 yo Maud P, 4 yo Nina S and 2 yo Edith M Lander were listed as living with them, as well as one servant and her son.3
Census1900*Annie appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Civil Dist. 5, Dickson Co., Tennessee, enumerated 11 June 1900, as 45 yo married(!) Annie Landers. Her children 25 yo Nina, 23 yo Edith and 16 yo Mauries Lander were listed as living with her, as well 26 yo married daughter Maude Knapke, 75 yo mother Eliza Thomas and two boarders.5
Census1910Annie appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California, enumerated 16 April 1910, as 60 yo widow Anna Lander. Her children 30 yo Nina, 28 yo Edith and 26 yo Maurise Lander were listed as living with her.6
ResearchNote*Research Note of 21 August 2019 re Find A Grave. I suspect Annie (1849-1919) is the person buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Los Angeles, Find A Grave memorial no. 179639606. None of her children are buried there, however. The fact that Nina is HOH in 1920 w/ sisters Edith, Maude Knapke and family living with her supports idea that their mother had died.7

James W. McGehee1,2

M, #9478, b. June 1852, d. 1908
Last Edited10 Apr 2023
Birth*James was born in June 1852 in Orange Co., Virginia, s/o William Graves McGehee. Date & location per his obit as transcribed in his Find A Grave memorial.1
Marriage*He married Arabella "Belle" Lander, daughter of Stephen Strode Lander and Mary Torian, on 18 October 1877 in Belleview, Christian Co., Kentucky. All three are buried in same Section 9 of Greenwood Cemetery as their parents.3,2,4
Census1880*James and Arabella appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Bainbridge Mag. Dist., Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 8 June 1880, as 28 yo dry goods merchant James W & 29 yo wife Belle McGehee. Their 0.1 yo son Nameless was listed as living with them. Best guess this was Morton. Also in the home was James' brother 20 yo John Q McGehee and Belle's 38 yo sister Mary Eliza Lander.5
Census1900James and Arabella appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Clarksville, Montgomery Co., Kentucky, enumerated 10 July 1900, as 49 yo merchant J W & 41 yo wife Belle McGehee. Their 10 yo son James W Jr was listed as living with them, as well as one boarder.6
Death*James died in 1908.1
Burial*He was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Clarksville, Montgomery Co., Tennessee, Section 9. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.1
