Birth*Jonathan was born in 1823 in Whately, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, s/o Dexter Dickinson & Prudence Whitney.2,3
Marriage*His first marriage was to Ophelia E. Bartlett, daughter of Dexter Bartlett and Sarah Sherman, in 1850. My preliminary research suggests their children were Lucy Dickinson (1852-1908, m. Fnu Cannon bef. 1906), John William "Willie" Dickinson (1854-1924), Elizabeth Josephine "Lizzie" Dickinson (1859-a1904, m1 Fnu Kingsley, m2 Fnu Hatfield, both bef 1906), and George Sherman Dickinson (1863-1934).

Marriage*His second marriage was to Judith L. Graves on 18 December 1872 at South Hadley, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts. My preliminary research suggests their children were Martha M Dickinson (1874-1912), Gideon Dickinson (c1876- ), and Edith Lydia Dickinson (1880-1936).
It's odd that in the 1900 census Judith shows only 1 born and 1 living - presumably daugher Edith in that census. Find A Grave has links to Martha and Edith.7,3,8
Census1880*Jonathan and Judith appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Whately, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 1 June 1880, as 57 yo farmer Jonathan & 46 yo wife Judith Dickinson. Census1900Jonathan and Judith appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Whately, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 4 June 1900, as 77 yo farmer Jhonathan & 76 yo wife Judith Dickinson. Their 20 yo daughter Edith Dickinson was listed as living with them.8
Death*Jonathan died on 23 October 1905 at his home on Sugarloaf St. in Greenfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts. According to his probate record he died intestate.10,3,1
Estate-AdminHis administration of estate began on 31 October 1905 at Franklin Co., Massachusetts. Mary E. Dickinson1

FatherJohn Vining Dickinson1
MotherSarah Graves Bartlett1 b. 17 Feb 1813, d. 31 May 1892
Last Edited28 Oct 2024
Birth*Mary, daughter of John Vining Dickinson and Sarah Graves Bartlett, was born on 10 April 1854 in Hawley, Franklin Co., Massachusetts.2,3
CensusNF1Mary appeared on the 1855 Massachusetts State Census of Windsor, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts, in the household of her parents, John Vining Dickinson and Sarah Graves Bartlett, as 1 yo Mary E Dickerson.4
Census1860Mary appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Savoy, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts in the household of her parents, John Vining Dickinson and Sarah Graves Bartlett, as 6 yo Mary E Dickinson.1
CensusNF1Mary appeared on the 1865 Massachusetts State Census of Windsor, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts, in the household of her parents, John Vining Dickinson and Sarah Graves Bartlett, as 11 yo Mary E Dickinson.5
Census1870Mary appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Savoy, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts in the household of her parents, John Vining Dickinson and Sarah Graves Bartlett, as 16 yo Mary Dickinson.6
Marriage*Her first marriage was to Elbridge P. Amsden on 13 January 1877 at Adams, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts.7,8
Census1880Mary and Elbridge appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Windsor, Sullivan Co., Vermont, enumerated 21 June 1880, as 35 yo laborer Elbridge P & 25 yo wife Mary P Amsden.9
Census1900*Mary and Elbridge appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Claremont, Sullivan Co., New Hampshire, enumerated 5 June 1900, as 54 yo day laborer Elbridge & 43 yo cotton mill weaver wife Mary E Amsden.10
Marriage*Her second marriage was to John W. Knight on 19 June 1908 at Amherst, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts. This was John's 2nd marriage also. I've not found a divorce record for Mary & Elbridge. He lived until 1934 so a divorce is a near certainty.11,2
Census1910Mary and John appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Pelham, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 23 April 1910, as 63 yo farmer John W & 55 yo wife Mary E Knight.12
Census1920*Mary appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Amherst, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, as 64 yo widowed private family housekeeper mother-in-law Mary E Knight in the household of her son-in-law & step daughter Norman F & Doris M Harlow. This enumeration is a bit of a long shot. I don't find Doris as a daughter of either Amsden or Knight from a previous marriage, but Mary's name, age, location are all good. A Ralph Harlow is mentioned in Mary's obit but their relationship is not stated.13
Census1930Mary appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Amherst, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, as 76 yo widowed sister Mary E Knight in the household of her sister Maria Bowen Dickinson; as 83 yo widow Maria B Edwards.14
Death*Mary died on 10 December 1937 at her home on Pine St. in Springfield, Hampden Co., Massachusetts, at age 83, 'following a long illness'.2
Burial*She was buried at Knights Corner Burial Ground in Pelham, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts. Find A Grave provides photo of a confusing joint headstone. On one face it reads Robert Knight (1879-1903), then Mary E Knight (1854-1937). On the adjacent face it reads John W Knight (1847-1913) and Laura Tupper (1844-1903). Best guess is Laura was John's m1 and with no room left on that side of the stone his m2 Mary's info was carved under a brother's name on the adjacent side.2,3
