Sophia A. Vaughn1,2,3

F, #5107, b. 14 April 1850, d. 14 May 1933
Last Edited8 Apr 2023
Birth*Sophia was born on 14 April 1850 in Georgia. Date is 14 Apr 1850 per headstone, Dec 1849 per the 1900 census.2,3
Marriage*She married James Columbus Swailes, son of E. Reese Swales and Martha Arington Davis, on 13 October 1886 in Laurens Co., Georgia. Sophia is listed as Mrs. S. A. Swailes on James' death certificate at Find A Grave. The 1900 census confirms married 14 years with 1 born and 1 living.1,3,4
Census1900*Sophia and James appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Dublin Dist., Laurens Co., Georgia, enumerated 22 June 1900, as 45 yo James & 50 yo wife Sophia Swailes. Their daughter Alice J. was listed as living with them. Solomon & Wylantha Payne & family live next door.3
Census1910Sophia and James appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Dublin Dist., Laurens Co., Georgia, enumerated 4 May 1910, as 55 yo farmer J C & 61 yo wife Nettie Swailes. Their daughter Alice J. was listed as living with them. Wife is enumerated as Nettie, 61 yo, but m1 for 25 years which matches the 1900 info well. Nettie shows only 1 born. Daughter Clarry Alice is 14 yo. Nettie is presumably Sophia, but it's messy.5

MotherSophia A. Vaughn2 b. 14 Apr 1850, d. 14 May 1933
Last Edited21 Sep 2022
Birth*Alice, daughter of James Columbus Swailes and Sophia A. Vaughn, was born on 3 August 1897 in Georgia. Her middle name is confused - is it Mattie as per Find A Grave, something starting with J as per the 1920 census? Birthyear also a mess - the 1900 clearly says August 1887 and aged 12, but the 1910 and 1920 suggest 1897. Did this Alice die and a new Alice born between 1900 and 1910? That makes little sense given the 'new' Alice's ages of 14 & 23 in the 1910 and 1920 censuses respectively. Current conclusion is that the 1900 is incorrect and should read Aug 1897 with age of 2.2,3,5
Census1900Alice appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Dublin Dist., Laurens Co., Georgia in the household of her parents, James Columbus Swailes and Sophia A. Vaughn, as 12 yo daughter Alice Swailes.2
Census1910Alice appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Dublin Dist., Laurens Co., Georgia in the household of her parents, James Columbus Swailes and Sophia A. Vaughn, as 14 yo daughter Clarry Alice Swailes.6
Marriage*She married Fnu Temple before 1914, date based on 6 yo daughter in the 1920 census. One daughter, 6 yo Annie H, in the 1920 census.7
Census1920Alice appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Dublin 342nd GMD, Laurens Co., Georgia in the household of her parents, James Columbus Swailes and Sophia A. Vaughn, as widowed 23 yo daughter Alice J. Temple.3
Death*Alice died. Find A Grave claims daughter of James & Sophia to be Mattie Alice (1887-1901) but this does not jive with the census record. Perhaps there was more than one daugher Alice, but that doesn't fit with the 'one born' status of Sophia in 1920.1

Birth*Susan, daughter of John Callaway Mackey and Juliana A. Keene, was born in May 1880 in Georgia. Doughtie gives her name as Florida Ophelia Mackey, with birthday of 1 May 1880. The census shows she was 0.1 yo born in May, so clearly the same person, unless twins. If twins then Florida must have died within days of birth. Yet Doughtie says Florida married Thomas, so perhaps one and the same person. For now they have been merged.1,2
