Birth*Louden, son of Leonard Atkey Pennington and Ann Elizabeth Eaton, was born on 28 May 1852 in Kent Co., Maryland. Find A Grave claims he was born in Delaware but primary sources say Kent, MD.3,4,1
Census1860Louden appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of 1st Election Dist., Queen Anne's Co., Maryland in the household of his parents, Leonard Atkey Pennington and Ann Elizabeth Eaton, as 7 yo Marion Pennington.1

     My preliminary research suggests their children were Sydney Wallace (1880-1954, m. Elizabeth C Walker 1907 in Malden, MA), Frank T (c1885- ), Maxwell G (c1891- ), Dorothy (c1894- ) and Philip A Pennington (c1898- ).5,6,4

Louden could be a stationary fireman but is pretty clearly a stationery clerk, whatever that is.6
Marr-Separate*Louden was separated from his wife, Anna Hopper Pennington before 22 April 1910. Event and date based on Louden and Anna living in different cities and enumerated separately in 1910. Anna is claiming widowed, Louden claims married. Their remaining children are living with Anna.8,9
Census1910*Louden appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 28 April 1910, as 57 yo married brewery fireman Ludon M Pennington. He is the 2nd HOH in the home of John J & Mary A Begwell. His wife Anna and their children are enumerated elsewhere.10

FatherLeonard Atkey Pennington3,4 b. 25 Sep 1818
MotherAnn Elizabeth Eaton4 b. 1827, d. 14 Sep 1868
Last Edited4 Mar 2023
Birth*Ruth, daughter of Leonard Atkey Pennington and Ann Elizabeth Eaton, was born on 4 March 1856 in Maryland.5,6
Census1860Ruth appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of 1st Election Dist., Queen Anne's Co., Maryland in the household of her parents, Leonard Atkey Pennington and Ann Elizabeth Eaton, as 3 yo Ruth Pennington.6
Census1870*Ruth and Isaac appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of White Clay Creek Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware, as 14 yo domestic servant Ruth Pennington & 15 yo farm laborer Isaac Nevel in the household of farmers William & Sarah Stroud.7
Marriage*Her first marriage was to Isaac William Neville on 23 April 1873 at Old Saint Georges Methodist Episcopal Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. My preliminary research suggests their children were Frank Russell (1873-1935, m. Mary K Schneider 1898 in DE), Frederick William (1877-1938) and Edward Charles Neville (1879-1934, m. Helen S Lange, Find A Grave memorial 104134904).8,9
Census1880*Ruth appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Birmingham Twp., Chester Co., Pennsylvania, as 23 yo married servant Ruth Nevill in the household of 41 yo farmer Frank & Ravenna B Graff. Ruth's 1 yo son Edward Nevill was living with her. I've been unable to find husband William Isaac and don't know whether they're separated, he's off on a job or if he's died.10
Marriage*Her second marriage was to Samuel H. Farrand before 15 September 1884. Date is from birthdate of son Homer Blair Farrand. Marriage also inferred from Ruth's marriage record to Bruff in which she's called Ruth E Pennington Farrand.
My preliminary research suggests their children were Virdelma (1882-1884), Homer Blaine (1884-1935) and Nellie May Farrand (1886- ).11,12
Census1900Ruth appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Franklin Dist., Carroll Co., Maryland, as 46 yo widowed boarder & housekeeper Ruth E Farrand in the household of 34 yo farmer Albert Crawford. Ruth's 16 yo son Homer Farrand was living with her.
There are enough issues with this enumeration to make me wonder if there were two Ruth E Penningtons. Ruth's age is off by 2-3 years and the number of children says 4 and 2 but should say 6 and 4 or 5 (as I currently understand her children). But her marriage to Bruff is rock solid and her marriage to someone named Farrand is also strongly implied by her surname Farrand in the Bruff marriage record. For now I'm going with this census and assuming it's simply in error re age and children.13
Marriage*Her third marriage was to John Carroll Bruff on 14 September 1907 at Wesley M. E. Church, Wilmington, New Castle Co., Delaware. There's no question that this is our Ruth who married Bruff. Both her parents are mentioned in the DE Vitals record. The 1910 census confirms married 3 years. Ruth shows 5 born with 5 living.2,14
Census1910*Ruth and John appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Wilmington Ward 3, New Castle Co., Delaware, enumerated 26 May 1910, as 44 yo paint shop laborer John C & 54 yo wife Ruth C Bruff.15
Census1920Ruth and John appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Wilmington Ward 11, New Castle Co., Delaware, as 53 yo machinist step-father John C & 63 yo mother Ruth E Bruff in the household of Ruth's son from her first marriage 41 yo Edward C Neville.16
Census1930Ruth and John appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Wilmington Ward 10, New Castle Co., Delaware, enumerated 5 April 1930, as 64 yo machine shop grinder John C & 74 yo wife Ruth Bruff.17
Death*Ruth died on 13 May 1931 in Wilmington, New Castle Co., Delaware, at age 75.1,5
Burial*She was buried at Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington, New Castle Co., Delaware. Find A Grave provides photo of joint headstone with son C Edward Neville and his wife Helen.5
Residence*Ruth and John resided at 301 S. Jackson in Wilmington, New Castle Co., Delaware, in 1932. John is an elevator operator at the Odd Fellows Hall.18
