E. Reese Swales1,2,3
M, #3132, b. 10 January 1831, d. 22 May 1900
Birth* | E., son of Morgan Swails and Mary Josephine Frierson, was born on 10 January 1831 in South Carolina. Swales Family Record provides date shown. Invalid Soldiers claims 10 Jan 1829 as does Find A Grave. The headstone seems to read 1828. Pension application says date is 10 Jan 1839. Son James' death certifcate at Find A Grave gives Reese's birthstate as Virginia.6,7,1,3,8 |
Move | Martha and E. joined the move of his father from South Carolina to Georgia after 1835.5 |
Marriage* | He married Martha Arington Davis on 19 February 1852. 23 Feb 1852 according to pension application & Invalid Soldiers. Find A Grave claims following children of this couple: WC, Wylantha, James Chappell, Ellen, and Emma Jane. All as 'calculated relationships'.6,2,9,7 |
Census1860 | E. and Martha appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Fork Dist., Toomsboro, Wilkinson Co., Georgia, enumerated 4 June 1860, as 29 yo ditcher Reese & 28 yo Martha Swails. Their children Wylantha, John Morgan, James Columbus and Reese Benion were listed as living with them.10 |
Milit-Service* | E. Reese Swales served as a Private with Co. A, 49th Regiment "Wilkinson Invincibles", Georgia Infantry during the Civil War , enlisting 4 March 1862. He was captured (pension app says "surrendered") at Petersburg, Va. on April 2, 1865, and released at Point Lookout, Maryland on June 19, 1865. He began drawing an invalid's pension in 1897 due to, "suffering from rupture, failing eyesight, and general disability." Widow Martha's entry in Invalid Soldiers claims he was at the surrender at Appomattox.11,2,12,3,9 |
Census1870 | E. and Martha appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Irwinton P.O., Wilkinson Co., Georgia, enumerated 20 August 1870, as 39 yo farm laborer Reese & 39 yo Martha Sweeys. Their children Wylantha, James Columbus, Reese Benion, Martha Ellen, William Carswell and Frances Emma Jane were listed as living with them.13 |
Census1880* | E. and Martha appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Dublin 342nd GMD, Laurens Co., Georgia, enumerated 12 June 1880, as 48 yo farmer E R & 48 yo wife Martha A Swales. Their children James Columbus, Reese Benion, William Carswell and Frances Emma Jane were listed as living with them, as well as one servant.14 |
Death* | E. died on 22 May 1900 in Laurens Co., Georgia, at age 69.6,7,2 |
Burial* | He was buried at Gilder Cemetery in Dublin, Laurens Co., Georgia. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.15 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 8 June 2019 re E Reese Swales' parents. See attached exhibit which is text file version of the Swailes Family Record. FindAGrave claims Morgan & his 1st wife, Mary Josephine Friarson, were the parents of Reese, among others. No evidence is provided and the relationship is marked 'calculated' which, in my experience, may mean little more than a wild guess. The 1850 & 1860 censuses support the children's names shown by FindAGrave for Morgan and his 2nd wife, Mary Lucas. Not one of the purported children of the first marriage shows up in either of these enumerations. It's as if Morgan married Mary Josephine and had a family, then she died and he married Mary Lucas and had another large family. I find no evidence that the children of the first marriage lived with the children of the second. The 1840 census for a Morgan Swailes in Darlington, SC, is enumerated as 1011001-21111. It doesn't work well with the names and birthyears from FindAGrave. Of course there are no names listed. Can't find him in 1830. There's an 1820 in Sumter, SC, enumerated as 1001-101. The two females are one bracket too young according to what we think we know. Morgan and Joseph are well placed. So far nothing is at all compelling to prove Morgan the father of Reese. Then comes the Swales Family Record. It has an entry for a Morgin Swailes and his death date matches FindAGrave's exactly. Clearly this Morgan is a relative. For now I'm going with FindAGrave's interpretation, but have queries out over the internet and am still looking for primary evidence of this relationship.6,16 |

James Columbus Swailes1,2
M, #3137, b. 15 April 1857, d. 18 March 1923
Birth* | James, son of E. Reese Swales and Martha Arington Davis, was born on 15 April 1857 in Georgia. Find A Grave contributor Dottie Gilder claims middle name is Chappell but that is contrary to primary source S842 Swailes Family Record. The 1900 census has shows May 1855 as birthdate. The 'married 14 years' matches our info.1,3,2,4 |
Census1860 | James appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Toomsboro, Wilkinson Co., Georgia in the household of his parents, E. Reese Swales and Martha Arington Davis, as 3 yo James C (indexed D) Swails.5 |
Census1870 | James appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Irwinton P.O., Wilkinson Co., Georgia in the household of his parents, E. Reese Swales and Martha Arington Davis, as 14 yo James Sweeys.6 |
Census1880 | James appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Dublin 342nd GMD, Laurens Co., Georgia in the household of his parents, E. Reese Swales and Martha Arington Davis, as 23 yo son James C Swales.7 |
Marriage* | He married Sophia A. Vaughn on 13 October 1886 in Laurens Co., Georgia. Sophia is listed as Mrs. S. A. Swailes on James' death certificate at Find A Grave. The 1900 census confirms married 14 years with 1 born and 1 living.8,4,3 |
Census1900* | James and Sophia appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Dublin Dist., Laurens Co., Georgia, enumerated 22 June 1900, as 45 yo James & 50 yo wife Sophia Swailes. Their daughter Alice J. was listed as living with them. Solomon & Wylantha Payne & family live next door.4 |
Census1910 | James and Sophia appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Dublin Dist., Laurens Co., Georgia, enumerated 4 May 1910, as 55 yo farmer J C & 61 yo wife Nettie Swailes. Their daughter Alice J. was listed as living with them. Wife is enumerated as Nettie, 61 yo, but m1 for 25 years which matches the 1900 info well. Nettie shows only 1 born. Daughter Clarry Alice is 14 yo. Nettie is presumably Sophia, but it's messy.9 |
Census1920 | James and Sophia appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Dublin 342nd GMD, Laurens Co., Georgia, enumerated 10 February 1920, as 64 yo James C & 69 yo wife Sophie Swailes. Death* | James died on 18 March 1923 at age 65.3 |
Burial* | He was buried at Gilder Cemetery in Dublin, Laurens Co., Georgia. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave as well as photo of his death certificate.3 |
