Birth*John, son of Dickie Chappell and Susan C. McCarty, was born on 19 March 1824 in Tennessee. Birthstate of TN is very iffy in my opinion.2
Census1830John is probably one of the two males age 5 to 9 listed in the household of his father, Dickie Chappell, in the 1830 Federal Census of Christian Co., Kentucky.3
Census1840John is probably one of the two males age 15 to 19 listed in the household of his father, Dickie Chappell, in the 1840 Federal Census of Christian Co., Kentucky.4
Marriage*He married Sarah Elizabeth Jefferson on 21 May 1845 in Cadiz, Trigg Co., Kentucky. My preliminary research suggests their children were Emma Frances (1848-1913, m. Robt W Major), Thomas Dickey (1850-1876), Martha F "Mattie" (1852-1886, m. John C Dabney), John Jefferson "JJ" (1855-1900, m. Ida Cooper), Mary Elizabeth (c1857- ), William Banks (1860-1860), Florence Manning (1861-1944, m. Nathaniel C Headley), Edward McCarty (1864-1896), George (1866-1868), Charles Allen (1868-1925, m. France Ragan & Mattie Wilson), and Ethel Chappell (1872-1875).5,6,7
Census1850*John and Sarah appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 2 August 1850, as 26 yo John W & 21 yo Sarah E Chappell. Their 2 yo daughter Emma F Chappell was listed as living with them.8
Census1860John and Sarah appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cadiz, Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 16 July 1860, as 36 yo J W & 31 yo Sarah E Chappell. Their children 12 yo Emma F, 10 yo Richd, 7 yo Mattie, 4 yo John, and 3 yo Elizabeth Chappell were listed as living with them. The name Richard (Richd) is very odd. How one gets Richard out of Thomas Dickey is unclear but his age fits with future censuses so this is almost certainly the same person.9
Census1870John and Sarah appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Cadiz, Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 23 August 1870, as 46 yo John W & 42 yo Sarah E Chappell. Their children 20 yo Thomas B, 17 yo Martha F, 14 yo John J, 12 yo Elizabeth, 9 yo Florence, 6 yo Edward, and 2 yo Charles Chappell were listed as living with them. Also in the home was 54 yo Elizabeth McCarty and a 28 yo music teacher. We have several Elizabeth McCartys in the database but ages don't match up well so I'm not sure who this is.10
Census1880John and Sarah appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Cadiz, Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 23 June 1880, as 56 yo J W & 51 yo Sarah E Chappell. Their children 24 yo John J, 18 yo Florence W, 15 yo Eddie, and 11 yo Charles Chappell were listed as living with them, as well as a clerk in their dry goods store and a servant.11
Death*John died on 13 June 1895 in Cadiz, Trigg Co., Kentucky, at age 71.2
Burial*He was buried at East End Cemetery in Cadiz, Trigg Co., Kentucky. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.2

Birth*Sarah was born on 10 August 1828 in Gallatin, Sumner Co., Tennessee, d/o Thomas Brome Graves & Martha Archer.2
Marriage*She married John Wesley Chappell, son of Dickie Chappell and Susan C. McCarty, on 21 May 1845 in Cadiz, Trigg Co., Kentucky. My preliminary research suggests their children were Emma Frances (1848-1913, m. Robt W Major), Thomas Dickey (1850-1876), Martha F "Mattie" (1852-1886, m. John C Dabney), John Jefferson "JJ" (1855-1900, m. Ida Cooper), Mary Elizabeth (c1857- ), William Banks (1860-1860), Florence Manning (1861-1944, m. Nathaniel C Headley), Edward McCarty (1864-1896), George (1866-1868), Charles Allen (1868-1925, m. France Ragan & Mattie Wilson), and Ethel Chappell (1872-1875).3,2,4

Their children 12 yo Emma F, 10 yo Richd, 7 yo Mattie, 4 yo John, and 3 yo Elizabeth Chappell were listed as living with them. The name Richard (Richd) is very odd. How one gets Richard out of Thomas Dickey is unclear but his age fits with future censuses so this is almost certainly the same person.6
Census1870*Sarah and Thomas appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Chappell Hill, Washington Co., Texas, enumerated 29 July 1870, as 33 yo Thos & 33 yo Mary E Chappell. No children.7

Also in the home was 54 yo Elizabeth McCarty and a 28 yo music teacher. We have several Elizabeth McCartys in the database but ages don't match up well so I'm not sure who this is.8
Census1880Sarah and John appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Cadiz, Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 23 June 1880, as 56 yo J W & 51 yo Sarah E Chappell. Birth*Margaret, daughter of George Lynn Torian and Elizabeth E. McCarty, was born circa 1841. She's listed at 19 yo in her marriage record at KY County Marriages.3
Census1850Margaret appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of her parents, George Lynn Torian and Elizabeth E. McCarty, as 9 yo Margaret Torian.4
Census1860Margaret appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cadiz, Trigg Co., Kentucky in the household of her parents, George Lynn Torian and Elizabeth E. McCarty, as 19 yo Margaret Torian.5
Marriage*She married John J. Northington on 12 November 1860 in Trigg Co., Kentucky. My preliminary research suggests their children may have been George (1862-b1871), William (c1863- ), Charles (c1866- ), and James Northington (1867- ).3,6,1
CensusLeadA person who might be Margaret appeared on the 1870 census in a 30 yo at Mayfield, Graves Co., Kentucky, John Northington. His 25 yo wife Margaret, and children 7 yo William, 4 yo Charles, and 3 yo James Northington were listed as living with him. No mention of only 'known' child George who presumably died before this census. In the same family but next dwelling number are 40 yo Gradison and 1 yo Samuel Northington. 65 yo Nancy Perry, a relative, is also in the home. John's occupation is saloon keeper. Gradison is a clerk in a saloon.7
CensusLeadA person who might be Margaret appeared on the 1880 census in a 40 yo farmer at Dist. 15, Montgomery Co., Tennessee, John Northington. His 35 yo wife Margaret and three sons, William, Charly and James Northington were listed as living with him. Apparently the saloon business from 1870 didn't work out.8
CensusLeadA person who might be Margaret appeared on the 1910 census in a 63 yo John Northington at Clarksville, Montgomery Co., Tennessee, His 60 yo wife Margrettte was listed as living with him. Both show married 40 years, which is 10 years less than it should be, with 6 born and 1 living.9

CensusLead*The 1870 census listed a a 30 yo, who may be this person, as head of household at Mayfield, Graves Co., Kentucky. John Northington.4
CensusLead*The 1880 census listed a a 40 yo farmer, who may be this person, as head of household at Dist. 15, Montgomery Co., Tennessee. John Northington.5

His 60 yo wife Margrettte was listed as living with him. Both show married 40 years, which is 10 years less than it should be, with 6 born and 1 living.6
ResearchNote*Research Note of 8 June 2019 re research challenges. No confirmed hits at Find A Grave, though he may be Memorial no. 113317305 and she may be Memorial no. 123996037, both buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Montgomery Co., TN. The only hits at FamilySearch are John & Margaret's marriage record and a birth record for their son George L Northington. The censuses are iffy at best and entered only as leads. I've entered their children in the Marriage tag based on these census leads.
