Mary Catherine Means1
F, #9212, b. 26 October 1832, d. 30 October 1917
Birth* | Mary, daughter of Young J. Means and Martha C. Palmer, was born on 26 October 1832 in Kentucky. Find A Grave claims she's the d/o Y J Means & Martha Parmer (sic). I disagree. Young J Means & Martha C Palmer did have a daughter Martha E Means, but she was born ca. 1841-42. The census record does not support a daughter Mary C at all. Furthermore Martha E shows up in her parents' 1860 census.3 |
Census1840 | Mary is probably one of the two females age 5 to 9 listed in the household of her father, Young J. Means, in the 1840 Federal Census of Christian Co., Kentucky.4 |
Marriage* | She married James Henry Boyd, son of Hardy Boyd and Mary "Polly" Torian, on 16 February 1849 in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky. My preliminary research suggests their children were James Young (1850-1924, m. Alice E Boyd), Susan Bell (1853-1869), Joshua D (1857-1940, m. Annie E Ferguson), and Mattie Henry Boyd (1861-1944, m. Luther H Smithson). All four kids have Find A Grave memorials.5,6,7,1 |
Census1850* | Mary and James appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 29 August 1850, as 22 yo Jas H & 17 yo Mary C Boyd. Their 0.4 yo son Jas Boyd was listed as living with them. Mary's parents Young J & Martha Means live next door above.8 |
Census1860 | Mary and James appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hopkinsville PO, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 20 August 1860, as 32 yo James & 28 yo Mary C Boyd. Their children 10 yo son James Y, 7 yo Susan B, and 3 yo Joshua Boyd were listed as living with them.9 |
Census1870* | Mary appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Hamby Pct., Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 18 July 1870, as 38 yo Mary K Boyd. Her children 20 yo James Y, 12 yo Joshua D, and 9 yo Mattie Boyd were listed as living with her.10 |
Census1900 | Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Mag. Dist. 6, Christian Co., Kentucky, as 68 yo widowed mother-in-law Mary K Boyd in the household of her son-in-law Luther H & daughter Mattie Smithson.11 |
Death* | Mary died on 30 October 1917 at home of L. H. Smithson in near Church Hill, Christian Co., Kentucky, at age 85.2,12,3 |
Burial* | She was buried at Ada Boyd Cemetery in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky. Cemetery called the Henry Boyd Burying Ground in Mary's obit.3,2 |

Archibald Gresham1
M, #9213, b. 27 March 1808, d. 1 September 1887
Birth* | Archibald was born on 27 March 1808 in Halifax, Halifax Co., Virginia, s/o George Gresham & Jane Lnu.2 |
Marriage* | He married Susan Boyd, daughter of Hardy Boyd and Mary "Polly" Torian, on 25 October 1832 in Christian Co., Kentucky. My preliminary research suggests their children were George Hardy (1833-1898, m. Julia A Boydstone), Mary Elizabeth (c1835-1919, m. Fnu Bayston), Susan Jane (1837-1921), John Wilson (1838-1911, m. Frances Gregory), Henrietta Olive (1844-1894), James C (1846-1939, m. Emily K Niergarth), Robert H (1848-1919, m. Martha A Sivley), Louise B (1850- ), Richard Columbus (1852-1925, m. Mary A Farmer), Virginia "Jenny" (1854-1887, m. James H Irvin), Charles Edward (1856-1946, m. Alice E Spencer), and Lucy A Gresham (1858-1931, m. William A Irvin). All but Mary have Find A Grave memorials linked to the parents.3,1 |
Census1840* | Archibald appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Christian Co., Kentucky, with a household listed as 110001-20001, as 30-39 yo Archibald Grisham. A perfect match. Susan is the female 20-29. Others are probably their children, 5-9 yo George, <5 yo Mary E, Susan J and John W Grisham.4 |
Census1850* | Archibald and Susan appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 17 August 1850, as 42 yo Archibald & 36 yo Susan Gresham. Their children 16 yo Geo Hardy, 15 yo Mary E, 13 yo Susan J, 10 yo Jno W, 8 yo Harrietta O, 6 yo Jas C, and 2 yo Robert H Gresham were listed as living with them.5 |
Census1860 | Archibald and Susan appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Olio Twp., Woodford Co., Illinois, enumerated 9 July 1860, as 56 yo Archibald & 45 yo Susan Gresham. All of their kids were with them: namely, 21 yo John W, 23 yo Susan J, 16 yo Henrietta O, 14 yo James, 12 yo Robert H, 10 yo Louisa B, 7 yo Richard C, 6 yo Virginia, 4 yo Charles E, and 1 yo Lucy A Gresham.6 |
Census1870 | Archibald and Susan appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Olio Twp., Woodford Co., Illinois, enumerated 30 July 1870, as 63 yo Abram & 59 yo Susan Griffiths. No kidding. But the list of children makes it clear this is Archibald & Susan Gresham. The children living with them were 30 yo Susan, 26 yo Olive, 21 yo Robert, 19 yo Laura (Louise), 18 yo Ruben (Richard), 16 yo Jane (Jenny), 14 yo Charles, and 12 yo Lucy Gresham. Yes there are five significant errors but overall I'm sure this is the family in question. The ages are all very good.7 |
Census1880 | Archibald and Susan appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Olio Twp., Woodford Co., Illinois, enumerated 9 June 1880, as 72 yo A & 65 yo Susan Gresham. The children living with them were 42 yo dau Susan J, 30 yo dau Henrietta, and 21 yo son Richard Gresham.8 |
Death* | Archibald died on 1 September 1887 in Woodford Co., Illinois, at age 79.2 |
Burial* | He was buried at Olio Township Cemetery in Eureka, Woodford Co., Illinois.2 |

James A. Arbuckle1,2
M, #9231, b. 2 August 1840, d. 18 August 1907
Birth* | James, son of Alexander W. Arbuckle and Arabella Torian, was born on 2 August 1840. His middle name shown as Alexander in FamilySearch but I've seen no primary evidence supporting. It makes sense as that was his father's given name.3 |
Census1850 | James appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of his parents, Alexander W. Arbuckle and Arabella Torian, as 9 yo Jas A Arbuckle.1 |
Census1860 | James appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hopkinsville PO, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of his father, Alexander W. Arbuckle, as 20 yo James Arbrickle.2 |
Marriage* | He married Martha Agnes Meadows circa 1878. Married 22 yrs with 10 born and 7 living in the 1900 census. My preliminary research suggests their children were Wesman Vernon (1878-1963, m1 Iva Sheridan, m2 Marie McHenry), Jennie Martha "Mae" (1880-1966, m. Robt Lee Brady), Rose Ethel (1881-1881), Nancy "Nannie" Gertrude (1883-1959, m. Robt L Caldwell), Minnie O (1884-1966), Claude Leroy "Roy" (1887-1960, m. Leora "Lee" Thompson), William Clyde (1888-1975, m. Nina Sullivan), Mary Lou (1890-1891), Jessie Linnise (1893-1987, m. W Z Sullivan), and Daisy Lorene Arbuckle (1897-1899). Find A Grave and FSTrees are shockingly consistent in this listing. All are confirmed by at least one census.4,3 |
Census1880* | James and Martha appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Mayfield (8th Mag. Dist.), Graves Co., Kentucky, enumerated 19 June 1880, as 39 yo James A & 25 yo Martha A Arbuckle. Their children 2 yo Vernon and 0.4 yo Jennie Arbuckle were listed as living with them.5 |
Census1900 | James and Martha appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Mag. Dist. 4, Graves Co., Kentucky, enumerated 12 June 1900, as 59 yo James & 46 yo Agnes Arbuckle. Robert A. Arbuckle1
M, #9233, b. 22 January 1845, d. 12 January 1889
Birth* | Robert, son of Alexander W. Arbuckle and Arabella Torian, was born on 22 January 1845 in Christian Co., Kentucky. His middle name likely Anderson but I've seen no real evidence of same. FSTrees ID no. 27S3-8TW claims birthdate of 22 Jan 1844. There's no headstone photo at Find A Grave so 1844 or 1845 remains undecided.2 |
Census1850 | Robert appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 1, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of his parents, Alexander W. Arbuckle and Arabella Torian, as 5 yo Robert A Arbuckle.3 |
Census1860 | Robert appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hopkinsville PO, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of his father, Alexander W. Arbuckle, as 15 yo Robt Arbrickle.4 |
Marriage* | He married Virginia McAtee on 17 January 1867 in Trigg Co., Kentucky. This is a messy family. Trees claims 16 children but that's nonsense. Find A Grave shows 9 and that's closer to the truth. Virginia's 1900 census shows 11 born with 7 living, numbers with which I can agree. My preliminary research suggests their children were Julian (1867-1952, m. Adelaide Parmenter), Maiden (1870-1874), Robert Anderson (1871-1872), Emma Floid (1873-1917, m. Henry F Owens), Joe Cyrus (1877-1936, m. Effie Hargis), Nevada (1878-1970, m. James L Pursley), Beulah Benton (1883-1971, m. Winfield L Johnson), Arabelle (1881-b1900), Gela Myrtle (1886-1975, m. Arthur M Nelson), Baby Arbuckle(1888-1888), and Robert "Bobby" Roy Arbuckle (1889-1921). Trees lists 2 other possibilities, Gordon Grainger and Vada Arbuckle. I find no evidence for either and the sources cited in Trees are useless IMO.5,6,2 |
Census1870* | Robert and Virginia appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of 6th Civil Dist., Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 27 September 1870, as 25 yo Robt & 21 yo Virginia Arbuckle. Their children 3 yo male Julian and 0.7 yo male Maiden Arbuckle were listed as living with them. Given the likely misspelling, what was Maiden's real name? Or is male incorrect, or maybe it's one of those A Boy Named Sue things.7 |
Census1880 | Robert and Virginia appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Taylor Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 16 June 1880, as 35 yo R A & 30 yo Virginia Arbuckle. Their children 12 yo Julian, 7 yo Emma, 3 yo Syrus, and 1 yo Nevada Arbuckle were listed as living with them.8 |
Death* | Robert died on 12 January 1889 in Greene Co., Missouri, at age 43.2 |
Burial* | He was buried. Find A Grave notes he is probably buried on his farm near Turners, MO.1 |

Charles G. Arbuckle1
M, #9235, b. circa 1852
Birth* | Charles, son of Alexander W. Arbuckle and Arabella Torian, was born circa 1852. FSTrees claims his middle name was Gentry, nickname Gent, but I've found no primary evidence other than the initial G.1 |
Census1860 | Charles appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hopkinsville PO, Christian Co., Kentucky in the household of his father, Alexander W. Arbuckle, as 8 yo Gentry Arbrickle.2 |
Marriage* | He married Mary E. Pryor circa 1873. My preliminary research suggests their children were Ellston (1873-1951, m. Mandie or Maude Hall, m. Grace Fnu with whom he's buried), Ora S (1875-1905, prob. m. J A Donovan), Ima (1877-1905), and C. Walter Arbuckle (c1880-1910). FSTrees claims 18 Feb 1873 without citation.3 |
Census1880* | Charles and Mary appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Mayfield, Graves Co., Kentucky, enumerated 19 June 1880, as 28 yo Charles G & 25 yo Mary E Arbuckle. Their children 6 yo Elston, 4 yo Ora, 3 yo Ima, and 0.9 yo Walter Arbuckle were listed as living with them. Charles' brother James & wife Martha live next door.1 |
Census1900 | Charles and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Mag. Dist. 7, Graves Co., Kentucky, enumerated 7 June 1900, as 48 yo Charly G & 55 yo Mary E Arbuckle. Their 22 yo Ima was listed as living with them. Mary's birth info is correct but the math was wrong. Her age should be 45.4 |
Death* | Charles died. FSTrees () claims 16 Oct 1947 in Wichita Co., TX, without citation. |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of between 1910 and 1940 re death date. Charles's wife Mary died in 1904 and the census record gets messy after that for Charles. Possible leads include, In 1910 Cochise, AZ, 58 yo, with 44 yo wife Josie. In 1920 Cochise, AZ, 68 yo, with wife Josephine. In 1930 Cochise, AZ, 68 yo, with wife Eleanor. In 1940 Garland, AR, 90 yo, single. |

Martha Agnes Meadows1,2
F, #9238, b. January 1854, d. 1918

Marriage* | She married James A. Arbuckle, son of Alexander W. Arbuckle and Arabella Torian, circa 1878. Married 22 yrs with 10 born and 7 living in the 1900 census. Robt Lee Brady), Rose Ethel (1881-1881), Nancy "Nannie" Gertrude (1883-1959, m. Robt L Caldwell), Minnie O (1884-1966), Claude Leroy "Roy" (1887-1960, m. Find A Grave and FSTrees are shockingly consistent in this listing. All are confirmed by at least one census.4,1 |
Census1880* | Martha and James appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Mayfield (8th Mag. Dist.), Graves Co., Kentucky, enumerated 19 June 1880, as 39 yo James A & 25 yo Martha A Arbuckle. Their children 2 yo Vernon and 0.4 yo Jennie Arbuckle were listed as living with them.2 |

Birth* | Rufus was born on 18 July 1839 in Kentucky, s/o Isaac Miller & Sarah Daniel. The censuses support Trees' claim of 1839 rather than the 1832 on his tombstone. I'll go with tombstone's month and day but Trees' year.2,1 |

Birth* | Virginia was born on 10 April 1849 in Trigg Co., Kentucky, d/o John McAtee & Sarah Edwards. Middle initial possibly M or A.2,3 |
Marriage* | She married Robert A. Arbuckle, son of Alexander W. Arbuckle and Arabella Torian, on 17 January 1867 in Trigg Co., Kentucky. I find no evidence for either and the sources cited in Trees are useless IMO.3,4,1 |
Census1870* | Virginia and Robert appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of 6th Civil Dist., Christian Co., Kentucky, enumerated 27 September 1870, as 25 yo Robt & 21 yo Virginia Arbuckle. Their children 3 yo male Julian and 0.7 yo male Maiden Arbuckle were listed as living with them. Given the likely misspelling, what was Maiden's real name? Or is male incorrect, or maybe it's one of those A Boy Named Sue things.5 |
Census1880 | Virginia and Robert appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Taylor Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 16 June 1880, as 35 yo R A & 30 yo Virginia Arbuckle. Their children 12 yo Julian, 7 yo Emma, 3 yo Syrus, and 1 yo Nevada Arbuckle were listed as living with them.6 |
Census1900* | Virginia appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Taylor Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, as 48 yo widowed mother-in-law Virginia M Arabuckle in the household of son-in-law & daughter James & Nevada Pursley. Virginia had been widowed about 17 months earlier. Three of her other children (Nevada's siblings) were in the home: namely, 16 yo Bula, 14 yo Gela, and 10 yo Robert Arabuckle.7 |
Census1930 | Virginia appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 12 April 1930, as 83 yo widow Virginia M Arbuckle. Her 39 yo widowed daughter Gela Nelson was in the home with her.8 |
