My preliminary research suggests their children were Viola "Vollie" Morgan (1880-1908), Alice May "Maude" Morgan (1885-1926, m1 J L Swisher 1900, m2 Harry Miller 1911), Ada Enone "Addie" Morgan (1885-1951, m. Alice Myrtle McClanahan), perhaps Arnold R Morgan (1894- ), and Cpl Marvin Farrell Morgan (1896-1952, m. Dora Marion Fleming 1926).
In the 1900 census Caroline shows married 21 years with 7 born and 6 living. The deceased child may have been Arnold R Morgan (1894-?), alleged by both the klopping & Smith trees at Ancestry without citation. I've found no real evidence for this particular name, though clearly Caroline did lose one child before the 1900 census.6,3

One other in the home was 17 yo single waitress daughter (adopted?) Clara E Faley.10
Census1920John and Caroline appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Peru, Miami Co., Indiana, enumerated 12 January 1920, as 69 yo mill laborer John T & 65? yo wife Caroline Morgan. Their 34 (should be 24) yo fireman son Arthur Morgan was listed as living with them.11
Census1930John and Caroline appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Peru, Miami Co., Indiana, at 467 W. Sixth St., enumerated 7 April 1930, as 75 yo furniture factory yard man John T & 73 yo wife Caroline Morgan.12

Birth*Sarah, daughter of John Morgan and Mary Catherine Sarber, was born from 17 August 1855 to 17 August 1856 in Indiana. Her headstone says 1856. Her death certificate says 17 Aug 1855. Age at death of 81y 9m 9d, if correct, works out to the 1855 date.3,4
Census1860Sarah appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Harrison Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana in the household of her parents, John Morgan and Mary Catherine Sarber, as 3 yo Sarah Morgan.5

Census1880Sarah appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Harrison Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana in the household of her mother, Mary Catherine Sarber, as 23 yo daughter Sarah Morgan.7
Marriage*She married Charles Harry Cox on 24 March 1883 in Kosciusko Co., Indiana. My preliminary research suggests their children were Edna M Cox (1885-1935, m. William Downing 1905), Nellie F Cox (1890-1919, m. Charles Clayton Shoemaker 1907), James Stewart Cox (1892-1976, m1 Bertha Viola Minear 1914, m2 Alvina Emma Jonas; res. Hammond, IN 1937).
License & marriage the same day. In the 1900 census Sarah shows married 17 years with 6 born and 5 living. But six children are listed as living with her and Charles. The eldest, 16 yo John, might be Charles's son from a previous marriage, born after Charles & Sarah were married, now living with his father. That's the only way I can find to make 6 & 5 work.8,9
Census1900*Sarah and Charles appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Warsaw, Kosciusko Co., Indiana, at 542 W. Center St., enumerated 14 June 1900, as 37 yo teamster Chas & 42 yo wife Sarah Cox. Death*Sarah died on 26 May 1937 at the home of her daughter Mrs. Wm. Mac Thompson in Hammond, Lake Co., Indiana, of cerebral hemorrhage following a paralytic stroke the previous day. Daughter Elizabeth Thompson was the informant on her death certificate.3,13,4
Burial*She was buried on 28 May 1937 at Mentone Cemetery in Mentone, Kosciusko Co., Indiana. Find A Grave provides joint headstone photo with Charles.3,13,4

Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Griffith, son of John Morgan and Mary Catherine Sarber, was born on 12 January 1868 in Mentone, Kosciusko Co., Indiana. His headstone and Find A Grave memorial show his first name as Griffrith. Every other source I've found says Griffith.3,4
Census1870Griffith appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Harrison Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana in the household of his parents, John Morgan and Mary Catherine Sarber, as 2 yo Griffith Morgan.5
Census1880Griffith appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Harrison Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana in the household of her mother, Mary Catherine Sarber, as 14 yo son Griffith Morgan.6
Marriage*His second marriage was to Rebecca Lula Donahoo on 3 July 1901 at Madison Co., Indiana. My preliminary research suggests their children were
John Lewis Morgan Sr. (1909-1993, m. Georgia Mertal Gosnell; res. Alexandria 1947 & 1957), and Katherine Donahoo Morgan (1915-1994, m. Arnold Owens; res. Alexandria 1947 & 1957).
Married 9 years in the 1910 census. The census confirms this was Lula's m2. However it shows this as Griffith's m1 which doesn't square with alleged daughter Chloe Vaugh Morgan born 1895.
Lula's m1 Dora Foland had died in August 1896. Lula and her daughter Hazel were living with Lula's parents in the 1900 census.7,8,9
Census1910*Griffith and Rebecca appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Alexandria, Madison Co., Indiana, enumerated circa 20 April 1910, as 42 yo farmer Griffith & 33 yo wife Luly Morgan. Living with them were Lula's 13 yo daughter Hazel Foland, 15 yo niece Iva Eisenhour whom Lula's obit says she raised, Lula's widowed mother Phoebe Donahoo, and their 0.7 yo son John Morgan.10
Census1920Griffith and Rebecca appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Monroe Twp., Madison Co., Indiana, enumerated 13 January 1920, as 52 yo farmer Griffith & 43 yo wife Rebecca L Morgan. Their children 22 yo step-daughter Hazel Foland, 10 yo son John L Morgan, and 4 yo daughter Katherine Morgan were listed as living with them.11
Census1930Griffith and Rebecca appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Monroe Twp., Madison Co., Indiana, enumerated 9 April 1930, as 62 yo farmer Griffith & 53 yo wife Rebecca L Morgan. Their 14 yo daughter Katherine Morgan was listed as living with them.12
Census1940Griffith and Rebecca appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Monroe Twp., Madison Co., Indiana, enumerated 21 May 1940, as 72 yo farmer Griffith & 63 yo wife Rebecca Morgan.13
Death*Griffith died on 14 November 1947 at his home south of Alexandria, Madison Co., Indiana, at age 79, of a heart attack.14,3,4
Burial*He was buried on 16 November 1947 at Park View Cemetery in Alexandria, Madison Co., Indiana. Find A Grave provides headstone & portrait photos.14,4
ResearchNote*Research Note of 10 April 2024 re Find A Grave. Griffith allegedly had a daughter Chloe Vaugh Morgan (1895-1949) with Fnu Shirley or Shirley Lnu. Find A Grave makes a claim for Chloe but not the mother. Chloe's marriage record jof 1917 to Harold D Henderson lists her parents as Griffith Morgan and Shirley. I've found no records other than Find A Grave linking Chloe to Griffith.

Jennie Lydia Morgan1

F, #10961, b. 23 March 1872, d. 28 January 1955
FatherJohn Morgan2,1 b. 29 Oct 1826, d. 11 May 1877
MotherMary Catherine Sarber2,1 b. 10 May 1836, d. 30 Oct 1887
Last Edited11 Apr 2024
Birth*Jennie, daughter of John Morgan and Mary Catherine Sarber, was born on 23 March 1872 in Mentone, Kosciusko Co., Indiana.3
Census1880Jennie appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Harrison Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana in the household of her mother, Mary Catherine Sarber, as 7 yo daughter Jennie Morgan.4
Marriage*She married Joseph E. Black on 13 June 1893 in Michigan. Two marriage records, one at Ancestry, one at FamilySearch. They're a bit confused. Ancestry's says they were married at Dowagiac, Cass, Michigan. FamilySearch's say the original location was Dowagiac but the actual location was Traverse, Sherman Twp. Keweenaw Co., Michigan. Google Maps shows only one town, Gay, in Keweenaw County. Google Maps shows the only town named Traverse in Michigan to be Traverse City in Grand Traverse County. Go figure where they were actually married.
Another oddity in the marriage records is that Ancestry appears to show both parties as mulattos. The difference in handwriting between W (white) and M (mulatto) is minimal and variable. In the 1900 census Joseph, his father and two brothers are all listed as black; Jennie as white. Anti-miscegnation laws in Michigan were repealed in 1883 but they may have both claimed to be mulatto to smooth the marriage process. In 1910 Joe is black, Jennie is white.5,6,3
Census1900*Jennie and Joseph appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Rochester, Fulton Co., Indiana, enumerated 9 June 1900, as 31 yo Joseph & 29 yo wife Jennie Black. Joseph's 82 yo widowed father Huston, and brothers George A and William Black were listed as living with them. One oddity is that Jennie's parents both are listed as born in Australia. Find A Grave says Wales for her father and her mother Catherine Sarber was pretty clearly born in Ohio.7
Census1910Jennie and Joseph appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Pipestone Twp., Berrien Co., Michigan, enumerated 26 April 1910, as 40 yo farm laborer Joe & 38 yo wife Jennie Black. One boarder was listed as living with them.8
Census1920Jennie and Joseph appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Union Twp., Fulton Co., Indiana, enumerated 3 January 1920, as 49 yo gravel hauler Joseph & 47 yo wife Jennie L (indexed S) Black.9
Census1930Jennie and Joseph appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Marion, Grant Co., Indiana, enumerated 7 April 1930, as 60 yo iron mill laborer Joseph & 58 yo home laundress wife Jennie Black.10
Census1940Jennie and Joseph appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Marion, Grant Co., Indiana, enumerated 5 April 1940, as 70 yo Joe & 68 yo wife Jennie Black.11
Census1950*Jennie appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Marion, Grant Co., Indiana, enumerated 5 April 1950, as 78 yo widow Jennie Black.12
Death*Jennie died on 28 January 1955 at Marion General Hospital in Marion, Grant Co., Indiana, at age 82, of chronic nephritis.13,3
Burial*She was buried on 31 January 1955 at IOOF Cemetery aka Estates of Serenity in Marion, Grant Co., Indiana. Find A Grave provides joint headstone photo with husband Joseph and calls this 'Estates of Serenity' cemetery. Her death certificate calls it the IOOF Cemetery.13,3

Birth*Caroline was born in 1857 in Springfield, Sangamon Co., Illinois.2
Marriage*She married John Tilden Morgan, son of John Morgan and Mary Catherine Sarber, on 27 August 1879 in Indiana.
I've found no real evidence for this particular name, though clearly Caroline did lose one child before the 1900 census.3,1
Census1880*Caroline and John appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Harrison Twp., Kosciusko Co., Indiana, enumerated 11 June 1880, as 24 yo farmer John & 23 yo wife Caroline Morgan. John's mother and seven siblings are enumerated as a 2nd household in this dwelling.4

Census1920Caroline and John appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Peru, Miami Co., Indiana, enumerated 12 January 1920, as 69 yo mill laborer John T & 65? yo wife Caroline Morgan. Their 34 (should be 24) yo fireman son Arthur Morgan was listed as living with them.7

Birth*Charles was born on 3 February 1860 in Indiana, s/o John Ivan Cox & Sarah Jane Fogerty.2
Marriage*He married Sarah A. Morgan, daughter of John Morgan and Mary Catherine Sarber, on 24 March 1883 in Kosciusko Co., Indiana. My preliminary research suggests their children were Edna M Cox (1885-1935, m. William Downing 1905), Nellie F Cox (1890-1919, m. Charles Clayton Shoemaker 1907), James Stewart Cox (1892-1976, m1 Bertha Viola Minear 1914, m2 Alvina Emma Jonas; res. Hammond, IN 1937), Sarah Catherine "Katie" "Sadie" Cox (1895-1975, m. Charles Franklin Mitchell; res. Hammond, IN 1937), and Elizabeth Jennette "Lizzie" Cox (1898-1961, m. Wm McKinley Thompson; res.
That's the only way I can find to make 6 & 5 work.1,3
Census1900*Charles and Sarah appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Warsaw, Kosciusko Co., Indiana, at 542 W. Center St., enumerated 14 June 1900, as 37 yo teamster Chas & 42 yo wife Sarah Cox. Rebecca Lula Donahoo1

F, #10972, b. 13 January 1877, d. 14 May 1957
Last Edited10 Apr 2024
Birth*Rebecca was born on 13 January 1877 in Alexandria, Madison Co., Indiana, d/o Thomas M Donahoo & Phebe J Moore.2,3,4
Marriage*She married Dora F. Foland before 1897. My preliminary research suggests their only child was Hazel Belle Morgan (1897-1962; Hazel was born 14 Mar 1897. Her father Dora had died the previous August; m. George L Hardcastle). Hazel is 3 yo in the 1900 census living with her maternal grandparents and mother. In the 1910 census she's 13 yo living with her mother and mother's m2 Griffith Morgan. In 1950 Hazel is a widow HOH with her mother and mother-in-law living with her.4,3
Census1900*Rebecca appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Alexandria, Madison Co., Indiana, as 23 yo widowed daughter Lulu Foland in the household of her parents 67 yo Thomas & 62 yo Phebe J Foland. Lulu's 3 yo daughter Hazel B Foland was living with them listed as granddaughter.5
Marriage*She married Griffith "Harry" Morgan, son of John Morgan and Mary Catherine Sarber, on 3 July 1901 in Madison Co., Indiana. My preliminary research suggests their children were

Married 9 years in the 1910 census. The census confirms this was Lula's m2. However it shows this as Griffith's m1 which doesn't square with alleged daughter Chloe Vaugh Morgan born 1895.
Lula's m1 Dora Foland had died in August 1896. Lula and her daughter Hazel were living with Lula's parents in the 1900 census.6,7,3
Census1910*Rebecca and Griffith appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Alexandria, Madison Co., Indiana, enumerated circa 20 April 1910, as 42 yo farmer Griffith & 33 yo wife Luly Morgan. Living with them were Lula's 13 yo daughter Hazel Foland, 15 yo niece Iva Eisenhour whom Lula's obit says she raised, Lula's widowed mother Phoebe Donahoo, and their 0.7 yo son John Morgan.8
Census1920Rebecca and Griffith appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Monroe Twp., Madison Co., Indiana, enumerated 13 January 1920, as 52 yo farmer Griffith & 43 yo wife Rebecca L Morgan. Their children 22 yo step-daughter Hazel Foland, 10 yo son John L Morgan, and 4 yo daughter Katherine Morgan were listed as living with them.9
Census1930Rebecca and Griffith appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Monroe Twp., Madison Co., Indiana, enumerated 9 April 1930, as 62 yo farmer Griffith & 53 yo wife Rebecca L Morgan. Their 14 yo daughter Katherine Morgan was listed as living with them.10

Joseph E. Black1

M, #10975, b. 24 January 1870, d. 8 June 1941
Last Edited11 Apr 2024
Birth*Joseph was born on 24 January 1870 in Marion, Grant Co., Indiana.2
Marriage*He married Jennie Lydia Morgan, daughter of John Morgan and Mary Catherine Sarber, on 13 June 1893 in Michigan.
In 1910 Joe is black, Jennie is white.3,4,1
Census1900*Joseph and Jennie appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Rochester, Fulton Co., Indiana, enumerated 9 June 1900, as 31 yo Joseph & 29 yo wife Jennie Black. Joseph's 82 yo widowed father Huston, and brothers George A and William Black were listed as living with them. One oddity is that Jennie's parents both are listed as born in Australia. Find A Grave says Wales for her father and her mother Catherine Sarber was pretty clearly born in Ohio.5
Census1910Joseph and Jennie appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Pipestone Twp., Berrien Co., Michigan, enumerated 26 April 1910, as 40 yo farm laborer Joe & 38 yo wife Jennie Black. One boarder was listed as living with them.6
Census1920Joseph and Jennie appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Union Twp., Fulton Co., Indiana, enumerated 3 January 1920, as 49 yo gravel hauler Joseph & 47 yo wife Jennie L (indexed S) Black.7
Census1930Joseph and Jennie appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Marion, Grant Co., Indiana, enumerated 7 April 1930, as 60 yo iron mill laborer Joseph & 58 yo home laundress wife Jennie Black.8
Census1940Joseph and Jennie appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Marion, Grant Co., Indiana, enumerated 5 April 1940, as 70 yo Joe & 68 yo wife Jennie Black.9
Death*Joseph died on 8 June 1941 in Grant Co., Indiana, at age 71.2
Burial*He was buried at IOOF Cemetery aka Estates of Serenity in Marion, Grant Co., Indiana. Find A Grave provides joint headstone photo with wife Jennie.2
