Birth*Caleb, son of Capt. Benjamin Rice and Sarah Upham, was born on 2 September 1755 in Brookfield, Worcester Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England.2,1
Marriage*He married Sarah Abbott on 6 June 1775 in Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. All their children born in Sturbridge, MA according to Hibner, who cites Rice Family and Sturbridge Vital Records.
My preliminary research suggests their children were Asa Rice (1776- ), Lydia Rice (1778-1831, m. ca. 1804 Seth Blanchard), Chester Rice (1780-1809, m. Mary Morey 1806), Jabez Rice (1782-1857, m. Nelley Boynes 1805), Benjamin Rice (1784-1847, m. Lucy Whitney), Sarah Rice (1786- , m. John Jackson 1810), Willard Rice (1788- , m. Sylvia Case 1810), Zeviah Rice (1790-1863, m. Ozias Northway 1810, d. & bur. Cincinnati), Danforth Rice (1792-1872, m. Roxana Lnu (1797-1874)), Nancy Rice (1795-1810) and Dwight Rice (1798-1872, m1 Sally Weed, m2 Betsey Bogle Holbrook).3,4
Move*Caleb and Sarah moved their residence from Brookfield to Sturbridge, MA before 8 March 1776, based on his first child, Asa, being born in Sturbridge this date.4
Census1790Caleb appeared on the 1790 Federal Census of Sturbridge, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 153 as 16+ yo male Caleb Rice. His wife Sarah is likely one of the three females. Every known child Asa through Zeviah fits perfectly, no exceptions.5
Estate-WillCaleb was named an heir in the will of Capt. Benjamin Rice, his father, dated 13 September 1790 at Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, receiving half of his clothes and £30.6
Census1800*Caleb appeared on the 1800 Federal Census of Charlton City, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 21301-21101 as 45+ yo Caleb Rice. His wife Sarah is likely the female 45+. Every known child fits perfectly except Asa who was 24 yo and likely moved out.7
MoveCaleb and Sarah moved their residence from Sturbridge, MA to Pompey, NY in 1806.4
Death*Caleb died on 4 November 1809 in Pompey, Onondaga Co., New York, at age 54, of typhus.4

William Rice1

FatherCapt. Benjamin Rice2,1 b. 1 Feb 1722/23, d. 8 Feb 1796
MotherSarah Upham2,1 b. 21 Oct 1721, d. 21 Mar 1804

Birth*William, son of Capt. Benjamin Rice and Sarah Upham, was born on 28 October 1759 in Brookfield, Worcester Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England. His headstone says 18 October.2,1,3
Marriage*His first marriage was to Sally Deming on 27 March 1788 at Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. My preliminary research suggests their only child was Clark Rice (1789-1872, m. Lydia Draper, 4 children at Find A Grave).4,5
Estate-WillWilliam was named executor and an heir in the will of Capt. Benjamin Rice, his father, dated 13 September 1790 at Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, receiving all his estate not given to his mother and siblings.6
Marriage*His second marriage was to Rebecca Richardson circa 12 January 1798. My preliminary research suggests their children were Columbus Rice (1799-1870, m1 Experience Turner, m2 Lucy Rice Brigham, 1 child at Find A Grave), Benjamin Rice (1801-1887, m1 Elizabeth Walker, m2 Sarah Hooker Walker bef 1850 census), William Rice Jr. (1803- , m. Julie Lnu ca 1841), Sally Rice (1805- ), Rebecca Rice (1806-1808), Julie Rice (1808- ), Henry Rice (1809-1876, m. Charlotte Sibley 1832), Rebecca Rice (1810- ), Azuba Rice (1812-1842, m. Selby Richardson, 1 child at Find A Grave), Louisa Rice (1815-1859, m. Isaac Hamant), Laura Rice (1817- ) and Nancy Rice (1819-1853, m. Martin Luther 1846).
Hibner & BMD say 12 Jan 1798, Compiled Marriages says 12 Jan 1799.5,7,8
Census1810William appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 31101-2001 as 45+ yo Wm Clark Rice. This enumeration is a perfect fit. The likely others are 26-44 yo m2 Rebecca, sons 16-25 yo Clark, 10-15 yo Columbus, <10 yo Benjamin, William and Henry, and <10 yo daughters Sally & Julie Rice.9
Census1820William appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 011301-1301002 as 45+ yo William Rice. His 26-44 yo son Clark Rice is enumerated just below William. The 26-44 yo female is almost certainly his m2 wife Rebecca. The 16-25 yo (and sole 16-18 yo) males are probably his sons Columbus, Benjamin and William. The 10-15 yo male is likely son Henry. After that it gets real iffy. There are three 10-15 yo females to parse between five daughters in this range. There's one <10 yo female to divide between two daughters.
There are 23 with the Rice surname on this census sheet! Those other than William and Clark above, are Tilly, Liberty, Moses, Dexter, Baxter, Phineas, Luke?, Parker C, Elijah, Haman, George, Peter, Shepwith?, Arnot?, John, Urick, Joseph, Simon, Ozanel?, Oliver and Osaph? Rice.10
Census1830William appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 0000300001-0021200101 as 70-79 yo William Rice. His known family are an excellent fit as follows: 50-59 yo m2 wife Rebecca, 20-29 yo sons & daughters Benjamin, William Jr, Julie, Henry and Rebecca, 15-19 yo daughter Louisa, 10-14 yo daughters Laura and Nancy.
Missing, if above analysis is correct, are son Clark (b 1789), son Columbus (b 1799, who is enumerated just below his father), daughter Sally (b 1805) and daughter Azuba (b 1812.)11
Census1840William appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 00000000001-00011 as 80-89 yo Wm Rice. The two females are likely his daughters 20-29 yo Laura (b 1817) and 15-19 yo Nancy (b 1819).
William's sons Columbus, William Jr. and Benjamin are enumerated on the same page, as well as unknown female 80-89 yo Azuba Rice. Perhaps she was William's sister. He did have a daughter by that name who m. Selby Richardson. She lived 1812-1842.12
Census1850*William appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, as 90 yo farmer William Rice in the household of his 47 yo farmer son William & his 44 yo wife Julia Rice. Their daughters 7 yo Elizabeth & 3 yo Laura Rice were also in the home.
William Junior's brother Benjamin lives next door below.13
Death*William died on 26 December 1853 at age 94.3
Burial*He was buried at Brookfield Cemetery in Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. Find A Grave provides headstone photo.3

Birth*Sarah, daughter of Capt. Benjamin Rice and Sarah Upham, was born on 2 September 1762 in Brookfield, Worcester Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England. Her Find A Grave memorial puts her middle name as Louisa but it's not on her headstone and I've seen no other evidence in support.3,2

My preliminary research suggests their children were Solomon Richardson (1782-1782), Saviah Richardson (1784-1787), Sarah Richardson (1787-1787), Solomon Richardson (1788-1837, m. Lucy Comins or Cummings 1820), Sarah "Sally" Richardson (1791-1809, m. Cheney Hamilton 1808), Alfred Rice Richardson (1793-1851, m. Lucy Rice1

F, #11320, b. 12 February 1732, d. 26 March 1809
Last Edited13 Jan 2025
Birth*Lucy was born on 12 February 1732, d/o Peter Rice & Dinah Wolcott of Brookfield. Lucy was Oliver's cousin. Find A Grave cites Ancestry's MA: Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 database, not a headstone or other cemetery record. She's listed as Buried or Lost at Sea which is almost certainly incorrect.1,2
Marriage*She married Oliver Rice, son of Azariah Rice and Hannah Bartlett, circa 1753, date based on birthyear of eldest child listed by Hibner. Lucy and Oliver were cousins.1
Census1790Lucy is probably one of the two females listed in the household of Oliver Rice, in the 1790 Federal Census of Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.3
Census1800Lucy is probably the female age 45 or over listed in the household of her husband, Oliver Rice, in the 1800 Federal Census of Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.4
Estate-WillLucy was named an heir in the will of Oliver Rice, her husband, dated 26 October 1803 at Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, receiving one half of his farm and buildings plus odds and ends of livestock and furniture, as well as the use of all his real estate, for the duration of her widowhood.5
Death*Lucy died on 26 March 1809 at age 77. See Memo on her birth tag for Find A Grave's source.1,2

Birth*Persis, daughter of Oliver Rice and Lucy Rice, was born on 1 April 1755 in Brookfield, Worcester Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England. Find A Grave gives her name as Elizabeth Persis “Percy” Rice Olds. I've seen no evidence to support the first name Elizabeth. She is Percy on her headstone.3,4,1
Marr-Banns*Intentions of marriage for Persis "Percy" Rice and Samuel Olds were published on 11 February 1777 at Goshen, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts. At the time of the marriage Samuel was of Chesterfield, MA, but Hibner writes, "it appears that he settled in Goshen, Mass."
My preliminary research suggests their children were Elias Olds (1778-1869, b. Goshen, MA; was a cabinetmaker), Abigail Olds (c1780-1859, b. Goshen, MA; m. Daniel Ford; death year iffy), Elizabeth Olds (1780-1865, m. Ezra Mather, 4 children at Find A Grave; this daughter per Find A Grave only, not Hibner or Olds, but she does fit well in the 1790 census), Lucinda Olds (1784- , b. Goshen, MA; a twin), Cynthia Olds (1784- , b. Goshen, MA; a twin), Moses Olds (1788-1788, b. Goshen, MA; a twin), Aaron Olds (1788-1788, b. Goshen, MA; a twin), Chester Olds (bap1799- , b. Goshen, MA; m. Naomi Sprague 1814), Roxy Olds (bap1799- , b. Goshen, MA; bp1799- , m. Ebenezer Ford 1816), Rev. Jason Olds (1793-1852, b. Goshen, MA; bp1799- , m. Matilda Ford 1817), Silas Olds (1794-1825, b. Goshen, MA; bp1799- , was a cabinetmaker) and Rufus Olds (b. Goshen, MA; probable son; m. Eunice Sprague 1814).5,6,7
Census1800Persis is probably the female age 45 or over listed in the household of her husband, Samuel Olds, in the 1800 Federal Census of Goshen, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts.8
Estate-WillPersis was named an heir in the will of Oliver Rice, her father, dated 26 October 1803 at Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, as Persis Olds. She received $1.9
Death*Persis died on 22 November 1815 in Hampshire Co., Massachusetts, at age 60.1
Burial*She was buried at Goshen Center Cemetery in Goshen, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts. Find A Grave provides headstone photo.1

Birth*Jesse, son of Oliver Rice and Lucy Rice, was born on 18 May 1757 in Brookfield, Worcester Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England. This date per MA Records and Hibner. Find A Grave says only 1756.3,1,4
Milit-Service*Jesse Rice served with Capt. Francis Wilson's Co., Col. Danforth Keyes' Regt. during the American Revolutionary War , pay stub dated 29 December 1777.5
Marriage*His first marriage was to Sarah Moore on 31 October 1782 at Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. My preliminary research suggests their children were Asapah Rice (c1785- , m. Thankful Drury 1811), Newell Rice (c1786- , m. Levinah Taylor 1817), Cynthia Rice (c1787- , m. Solomon Richardson 1822; 4 children at Hibner) and Polly Rice (c1788- , m. Solomon Richardson 1842). Birthyears are wags based on the 1810 census.
Sarah was of Brookfield in Hibner's marriage record.6,2,7
Census1790Jesse appeared on the 1790 Federal Census of Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 113 as 16+ yo male Jesse Rice. His wife Sarah is probably one of the three females. Son Asapah or Newell the male under 16 yo. My best guess birthyears suggest they should both be listed here. Daughters Cynthia & Polly are likely the other two females.8
Marriage*His second marriage was to Mary "Molly" Newton on 20 April 1795 at Sturbridge, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. Mary had m1 Abner Dunton in 1777. He died 1789 of consumption. Leonard says Sturbridge, Town & Vital says Brookfield.9,2,7
Estate-WillJesse was named an heir in the will of Oliver Rice, his father, dated 26 October 1803 at Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, receiving $36 paid in two installments.10
Census1810Jesse appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 00201-00201 as 45+ yo male Jesse Rice. His wife Molly is probably the 45+ yo female. Their sons Asapah & Newell would be the two males 16-25 yo, daughters Cynthia & Polly the two females 16-25 yo. A perfect fit.11
Census1820Jesse appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Brookfield South Parish, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 000001-00001 as 45+ yo male Jesse Rice. His wife Molly is probably the 45+ yo female.12
Census1830*Jesse appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Sturbridge, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, with a household listed as 0000000001-0000000001 as 70-79 yo male Jesse Rice. His wife Molly is probably the 70-79 yo female.13
Death*Jesse died on 27 December 1831 in Sturbridge, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, at age 74.7,4
Burial*He was buried at Old Burial Ground in Sturbridge, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. Find A Grave provides NO headstone photo or links to family members. The other three with surname Rice in this cemetery are currently unknown.4

MotherLucy Rice1 b. 12 Feb 1732, d. 26 Mar 1809
Last Edited28 Jan 2025
Birth*Nathan, son of Oliver Rice and Lucy Rice, was born on 18 June 1762 in Brookfield, Worcester Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England.2,3,1
Milit-Service*Nathan Rice served during the American Revolutionary War circa 1776. A collaboration entry in his FamilySearch record (ID LZP7-R1Q) claims without citation, "Nathan served in the Revolutionary War in Captain Walker's Company for three months. Reenlisted in 1776 in Col. Brook's Regiment".4
Marriage*He married Jemima McCluer. My preliminary research suggests their children were Nathaniel Rice (1796-1870), Luceba Rice (1798-1827), Zilpha Rice (1799-1874, m. Silas Law Brown 1835; nine children at Find A Grave), Thomas McClure Rice (1801-1842, m. Elizabeth Wilson; 2 children at Find A Grave; KIA in the Dawson Massacre 18 Sep 1842, La Grange, Fayette Co., Texas), Sabrina Rice (1803-1885, b. Washington Co, OH; m. William Otis) and Lucy Rice (1808-1883, m. Horace Waterman 1851 in Washington Co., OH). The first two, Nathan and Luceba, are a bit sketchy.3
Estate-WillNathan was named an heir in the will of Oliver Rice, his father, dated 26 October 1803 at Brookfield, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, receiving $27 in two installments.5
Census1830Nathan appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Ohio Twp., Washington Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 100010001-010101 as 60-69 yo Nathan Rice. His wife Jemima is probably the 50-59 yo female. The 20-29 yo male may be his son Thomas or perhaps daughter Sabrina's husband William Otis. The three females 20-29 yo are either the youngest three daughters - Zilpha, Sabrina and Lucy - or two of the daughters and the wife of Thomas.6
Census1840*Nathan appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Ohio Twp., Washington Co., Ohio, with a household listed as 0000000001-001001001 as 70-79 yo Nathan Rice. His wife Jemima is probably the female 60-69, daughter Lucy the female 30-39. Lucy's sister Sabrina, the other possibility, is with her husband William Otis in Fearing, Washington Co.7
Death*Nathan died on 18 January 1841 in Washington Co., Ohio, at age 78. Find A Grave says Union Twp., Rev War Pension says Ohio Twp.4,3
Burial*He was buried at Rainbow Cemetery in Rainbow, Washington Co., Ohio. Find A Grave provides headstone photo with links to wife and three children.3
