Birth*Isaac, son of Thomas A. Evans and Nancy McAdams, was born on 22 March 1863 in Iowa City, Johnson Co., Iowa. Marriage Records 1880-1951 entry says he was born in Newport rather than Iowa City.5,6,7
Census1870Isaac appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Newport Twp., Johnson Co., Iowa in the household of his mother, Nancy McAdams, as 7 yo Alexander E Evans.8
MarriageHis first marriage was to Emma Catherine Berchenbriter circa 1883, date based on birthyear of daughter Bertha Maude Evans (1884-1912) as listed by Find A Grave. My preliminary research suggests their children were Bertha M (1884-1912), and Lee Dayton Evans (1890-1970, m. Edna Clara Kohl).9,7
Marr-Divorce*Isaac was divorced from Emma Catherine Berchenbriter from 1883 to 22 April 1910. Emma is divorced in the 1910 census of 22 April, living with their daughter Bertha M Evans.2,10,7
Census1900*Isaac and Emma appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Penn Twp., Johnson Co., Iowa, enumerated 2 June 1900, as 37 yo farmer Isaac A & 37 yo wife Emma C Evans, Their children 15 yo Berth M and 9 yo Lee D Evans were listed as living with them. Isaac's brother Wesley and family live next door below.11
Census1920*Isaac appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Oakdale, Johnson Co., Iowa, at Iowa State Sanatorium, enumerated 13 January 1920, as 57 yo employee Isaac A Evans.12
Marriage*His second marriage was to Emma Catherine Berchenbriter on 24 February 1921 at Marengo, Iowa Co., Iowa. This was the 2nd marriage for both Alexander & Catherine according to Marriage Records 1880-1951. Her surname is already Evans in that document.6,2
Marr-Divorce*Isaac was divorced from Emma Catherine Berchenbriter between 1921 and 1929. Another infrerred divorce. Emma didn't die until 1934.6,13
Marriage*His third marriage was to Meta Hawks on 4 December 1929 at Iowa City, Johnson Co., Iowa. The marriage record confirms this was Meta's 2nd marriage. It also says it was Isaac's 2nd. I believe it was indeed his 2nd wife, but his 3rd marriage. Meta's prior marriage was to Fnu Gifford by whom she had three children, Elmer, Grace, and Meta M Gifford.13
Census1930*Isaac and Meta appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Iowa City, Johnson Co., Iowa, enumerated 21 April 1930, as 69 yo Children's Hospital janitor Isaac A & 53 yo wife Metta Evans. Their step-children 14 yo Elmer, 12 yo Grace, and 9 yo Metta M Gifford were listed as living with them, all children of Metta's prior marriage.14
Death*Isaac died in 1952.7
Burial*He was buried at Lisbon Cemetery in Lisbon, Linn Co., Iowa. Find A Grave provides photo of joint headstone with wife Emma C and daughter Bertha M Evans.7
ResearchNote*Research Note of 9 May 2021 re sources. The sources for Isaac and Emma Catherine are confusing. The only explanation I can come up with that explains all the sources is that they were married ca. 1884, had two children, then divorced, then remarried in 1921, then divorced again before 1929 when Isaac married Meta Hawks Gifford.
I considered that perhaps Isaac had m1 someone other than Emma Catherine and that Find A Grave has it wrong. But son Lee Dayton's marriage record with Edna Clara Kohl shows his parents as Isaac Evans and Emma Berchan (no image to see why her surname was truncated.)7,9

George P. Mulford1,2

M, #8713, b. 5 December 1847, d. 14 October 1929
FatherJames Mulford3,2 b. 1817, d. 15 Oct 1873
MotherEsther Jane Pool3,2 b. 18 Feb 1824, d. 4 Jan 1856
Last Edited14 Oct 2022
Birth*George, son of James Mulford and Esther Jane Pool, was born on 5 December 1847 in Ohio. Year only at Find A Grave. Complete date per death certificate.3,2,4
Census1850George appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Pleasant Twp., Logan Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, James Mulford and Esther Jane Pool, as 2 yo George.2
Census1860George appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Blue Creek Twp., Adams Co., Indiana in the household of his parents, James Mulford and Mary Caroline Gearhart, as 12 yo Georgy Mulford.5
Marriage*His first marriage was to Amanda Jane "Jennie" Kemp on 27 August 1872 at Champaign Co., Ohio. My preliminary research suggests their children were Alta O (1872- , m. Clyde Schwaner 1901), John Henry (1875- ), and George W Mulford (1880- ). Amanda's obit of Jan 1900 says a son and a daughter survived her. As I've found no real source for son George my guess is he died in infancy.6,7,8
Census1880*George and Amanda appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Urbana, Champaign Co., Ohio, enumerated 2 June 1880, as 27 yo 'boot and shoe house' worker George P & 26 yo wife Amanda J Mulford. Their children 8 yo Alta O & 4 yo John H Mulford were listed as living with them. The scan of this census page is quite faint.9
Census1900*George appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Urbana, Champaign Co., Ohio, enumerated 6 June 1900, as 52 yo widower stationary engineer George P Mulford. His children 27 yo Alta O & 24 yo John H were listed as living with him.
Wikipedia writes, A stationary engineer (sometimes called an operating engineer or power engineer) is a technically trained person who operates, troubleshoots, and oversees industrial machinery and equipment that provides energy in various forms.10
Marriage*His second marriage was to Hepzibah Harriet "Hattie" Hoover on 17 November 1901. The Indiana Marriages entry with Hattie as 'Hattie née Hoover' is the more compelling and I've used it's date. Hattie's m1 according to Find A Grave was Morgan B Lewis (1837-1898).11,12,4,13
Census1910*George and Hepzibah appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Portland, Jay Co., Indiana, enumerated 15 April 1910, as 63 yo stationary engineer George & 64 yo wife Hattie Mulford.14
Census1920George and Hepzibah appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Portland, Jay Co., Indiana, enumerated 2 January 1920, as 72 yo laborer George B & 74 yo wife Hattie Mulford.15
Death*George died on 14 October 1929 at Jay County Hospital in Portland, Jay Co., Indiana, at age 81. He was hit and killed by a railroad train. The Indiana Death Certificate record seems to certainly be this George. However there's an Ohio Deaths & Burials that says George P Mulford died there. Likely that's a different person.16,4,17
Burial*He was buried at Fairview Cemetery in Quincy, Logan Co., Ohio. Joint headstone photo is available at Find A Grave.4

Isaac Sanford Jacobs1,2

Last Edited24 Apr 2024
Birth*Isaac was born on 19 February 1867 in Shelby Co., Ohio.1,3,4
Marriage*He married Mary Ann Mulford, daughter of Amos Mulford and Elizabeth Forsyth, on 20 March 1888 in Shelby Co., Ohio. My preliminary research suggests their children were Horace Greeley ('died in infancy'), Grace D (1889-1964, of Galiopolis, OH 1940), Charles William (1896-1963, m. Nora Lnu, m. Elizabeth Fergus, m. Zelma Battie 1939, of Piqua 1940), and Mary Fidelia H Jacobs (1906-1939, m. Ralph Jones 1921). Isaac's m2 was Caroline Loffer Peterman.5,2,6,7,1
Census1900*Isaac and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Salem Twp., Shelby Co., Ohio, enumerated 25 June 1900, as 33 yo day laborer Isaac & 38 yo wife Mary Jacobs. Their children 10 yo Grace D and 3 yo Charlie Jacobs were in the house with them.4
Census1910Isaac and Mary appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Salem Twp., Champaign Co., Ohio, enumerated 10 May 1910, as 42 yo farm laborer Isaac S & 48 yo wife Mary Jacobs. Their children 20 yo Grace D, 13 yo Charlie, 6 yo Mary F H and Mary's 59 yo brother Lemuel Mulford were in the house with them.8
Census1920Isaac and Mary appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Mad River Twp., Champaign Co., Ohio, enumerated 2 March 1920, as 53 yo farm laborer Isaac S & 59 yo wife Mary Jacobs. Their children 23 yo Charlie, and 30 yo Grace Jacobs were listed as living with them, as well as 24 yo daughter-in-law Nora Mulford, and grandchildren 6 yo Laura E, 2 yo Bertha F, and 0.10 yo William S Jacobs. It would appear that the enumerator got Isaac's and Mary's ages mixed up.9
Death*Isaac died on 5 July 1940 at Memorial Hospital in Piqua, Miami Co., Ohio, at age 73, of esophageal cancer.1,3,10
Burial*He was buried on 8 July 1940 at Graceland Cemetery in Sidney, Shelby Co., Ohio. Headstone photo is available at Find A Grave.1,3
