Maria Louise Mulford1,2
F, #8674, b. 20 January 1852, d. 17 December 1925
Birth* | Maria, daughter of John C. Mulford and Osee Morgan, was born on 20 January 1852 in Shelby Co., Ohio.3,2 |
Census1860 | Maria appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Pratt, Salem Twp., Shelby Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, John C. Mulford and Osee Morgan, as 8 yo Meriah Mulford.4 |
Marriage* | She married Andrew C. Thompson on 22 July 1873 in Page Co., Iowa. My preliminary research suggests their children were Clarence Augustus (1874-1959, m. Maud O Nebeker 1905), Walter Cecil (1876-1946, m. Martha Cecilia "Mattie" Sherwood 1899), Harlan Erastus (1878-1952), Ethel (1880-1940, m. Fred Dutcher Knapp 1910 in NMT), Athel (1880-1919), Millie Elmyra (1882-1937, m. Herman John Hilgers), Eliza Mae "Lida" (1884-1960, m. Burton Roach), Ernest (1889-1967, m1 Sarah A Birchall 1918, m2 Violet Mildred Fenton 1927), and Otis Thompson (1891-1902). The 1900 census confirms married 27 years, showing 9 born & 9 living. In 1910 it's 9 born & 8 living, son Otis having died in 1902.5,6,1,7 |
Census1880* | Maria and Andrew appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Twp. No. 3, Baylor Co., Texas, enumerated 8 June 1880, as 28 yo farmer Andrew C & 28 yo wife Maria L Thompson. Their children 5 yo Clarence A, 4 yo Walter C, 2 yo Harlan E, 0.5 yo Ethel, and 0.5 yo son Athel Thompson were listed as living with them.8 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 5 March 2021 re Ethel & Athel Thompson. The 1880 makes it clear that Andrew & Louisa had daughter & son twins in January 1880. They were enumerated as female Ethel & male Athel. Find A Grave, the Larson-Boileau tree at Ancestry, and FSTrees have varying versions of their lives. Find A Grave has memorials for Ethel Thompson Knapp (1880-1940, m. Fred D Knapp, had one child), and Ethel Basil Thompson Graham (1881-1975, m. James D Graham, no issue listed). The Larson-Boileau Tree at Ancestry shows Ethel Thompson (1880-1940, m. Fred Dutcher Knapp, had one child), and Athel Thompson (1880-1919, no spouse or children shown). FamilySearch Trees shows Ethel Thompson (1880-1940, m. Fred D Knapp, had three chidren), and Athel Thompson (1880-1919, ID LLHT-RRJ, no spouse, no issue). The odd woman out here is Ethel Basil Thompson who m. James Graham. The Kelley III Family Treehouse tree at Ancestry shows EBT as daughter of Andrew & Louise. A quality source however is Texas, U.S., Death Certificates, 1903-1982 which records her lifespan as 1881-1975 and her parents as Billy Thompson & Molly Hayden. My conclusion is that Find A Grave and Kelley III Family Treehouse are incorrect and this woman is not the daughter of Andrew & Louise. For followup on Athel Thompson try U.S., Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914 which shows he enlisted on 26 Feb 1908, he was 28 yo, born Seymore, Texas, a farmer, and that he was discharged 01 Mar 1909 at Ft. Columbia, Washington. Other records show he died 01 Nov 1919 in San Diego.8 |
Census1900 | Maria and Andrew appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Pct. No. 1, Union Co., New Mexico Territory, enumerated 13 June 1900, as 48 yo farmer A C & 48 yo wife Marie Thompson. Their children 20 yo Ethel, 18 yo Millie, 17 yo Eliza, 11 yo Ernest, and 9 yo Otis Thompson were listed as living with them.9 |
Census1910 | Maria and Andrew appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 5, Starr Co., Texas, enumerated 3 May 1910, as 58 yo farmer A C & 58 yo wife L Thompson. Their 30 yo single daughter Ethel Thompson was listed as living with them. Note that the Larson-Boileau tree at FSTrees has both Ethel & Athel claiming this 30 yo's spot in the census.10 |
Census1920 | Maria and Andrew appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of El Cajon, San Diego Co., California, enumerated 5 January 1920, as 68 yo self-employed vulcanizer Andrew & 67 yo wife Louie Thompson.11 |
Death* | Maria died on 17 December 1925 in San Diego, San Diego Co., California, at age 73.3 |
Burial* | She was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in San Diego, San Diego Co., California. Joint headstone photo available at Find A Grave.3 |

Emeline H. "Emma" Mulford1,2
F, #8675, b. 1855, d. 14 May 1935
Birth* | Emeline, daughter of John C. Mulford and Osee Morgan, was born in 1855 in Ohio.1,2 |
Census1860 | Emeline appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Pratt, Salem Twp., Shelby Co., Ohio in the household of her parents, John C. Mulford and Osee Morgan, as 6 yo Emiline Mulford.4 |
CensusLead* | The 1870 census listed a a 17 yo, who may be this person, as head of household at Pierce Twp., Page Co., Iowa. Emma Mulford.5 |
Marriage* | Her first marriage was to Charles Oliver "Charlie" Hurlburt on 8 November 1876 at Clarinda, Page Co., Iowa. My preliminary research suggests their children were Leon B (1877-1877), Leah D (1879-1879), Nellie Lena (1882-1932, b. IA, m. James Prentiss McCloy 1904), Jesse Charles (1888-1935, b. OR, m. Annette Lnu), and Mayrilla Blanche Hurlburt (1891-1961, b. OR, d. Los Angeles, m. Fnu Jackson). I was iffy about this marriage until daughter Nellie's death certificate was found. It shows her mother as Emma Mulford, born Shelby Co., Ohio, which is right on.6,7 |
Marriage* | Her second marriage was to Fnu Crane between 1891 and 1900, date based on Emma's m1 Hurlburt having died in 1891 and her being the widow Crane in the 1900 census.8,9 |
Census1900* | Emeline appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Shenandoah 3rd Ward, Page Co., Iowa, enumerated 7 June 1900, as 45 yo widow Emma H Crane. Her children 17 yo Nellie L, 12 yo Jesse, and 9 yo Maryrillah B Hulbertwere listed as living with her, as well as two lodgers.8 |

Her daughter 27 yo daughter Nellie L McCloy was listed as living with her, as well as Nellie's 27 yo husband James P McCloy (as son-in-law), Emma's 22 yo son Jesse C Hurlburt, and her 18 yo daughter Mayrilla B Hurlburt.10 |
Census1920 | Emeline appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Shenandoah 2nd Ward, Page Co., Iowa, as 65 yo widowed mother-in-law Emma H Crane in the household of her 37 yo daughter Nellie L & husband 36 yo James P McCloy.11 |
Census1930 | Emeline appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Chicago 49th Ward, Cook Co., Illinois, as 75 yo widowed mother-in-law Emma Crane in the household of her 45 yo son Jessie Herbert. Emma should be mother, not mother-in-law. Likely Jesse's 21 yo wife Annette talked to the enumerator.12 |
Death* | Emeline died on 14 May 1935 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California.1,13 |
Burial* | She was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Glendale) in Glendale, Los Angeles Co., California, in Acacia, Map 1, Lot 62, Space 3.1 |

Andrew C. Thompson1
M, #8676, b. 1 January 1852, d. 31 December 1928
Birth* | Andrew was born on 1 January 1852 in Davenport, Scott Co., Iowa.2 |
Marriage* | He married Maria Louise Mulford, daughter of John C. Mulford and Osee Morgan, on 22 July 1873 in Page Co., Iowa. My preliminary research suggests their children were Clarence Augustus (1874-1959, m. Maud O Nebeker 1905), Walter Cecil (1876-1946, m. Martha Cecilia "Mattie" Sherwood 1899), Harlan Erastus (1878-1952), Ethel (1880-1940, m. Fred Dutcher Knapp 1910 in NMT), Athel (1880-1919), Millie Elmyra (1882-1937, m. Herman John Hilgers), Eliza Mae "Lida" (1884-1960, m. Burton Roach), Ernest (1889-1967, m1 Sarah A Birchall 1918, m2 Violet Mildred Fenton 1927), and Otis Thompson (1891-1902). The 1900 census confirms married 27 years, showing 9 born & 9 living. In 1910 it's 9 born & 8 living, son Otis having died in 1902.3,4,5,1 |
Census1880* | Andrew and Maria appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Twp. No. 3, Baylor Co., Texas, enumerated 8 June 1880, as 28 yo farmer Andrew C & 28 yo wife Maria L Thompson. Their children 5 yo Clarence A, 4 yo Walter C, 2 yo Harlan E, 0.5 yo Ethel, and 0.5 yo son Athel Thompson were listed as living with them.6 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 5 March 2021 re Ethel & Athel Thompson. Other records show he died 01 Nov 1919 in San Diego.6 |
Census1900 | Andrew and Maria appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Pct. No. 1, Union Co., New Mexico Territory, enumerated 13 June 1900, as 48 yo farmer A C & 48 yo wife Marie Thompson. Their children 20 yo Ethel, 18 yo Millie, 17 yo Eliza, 11 yo Ernest, and 9 yo Otis Thompson were listed as living with them.7 |
Census1910 | Andrew and Maria appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 5, Starr Co., Texas, enumerated 3 May 1910, as 58 yo farmer A C & 58 yo wife L Thompson. Their 30 yo single daughter Ethel Thompson was listed as living with them. Note that the Larson-Boileau tree at FSTrees has both Ethel & Athel claiming this 30 yo's spot in the census.8 |
Census1920 | Andrew and Maria appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of El Cajon, San Diego Co., California, enumerated 5 January 1920, as 68 yo self-employed vulcanizer Andrew & 67 yo wife Louie Thompson.9 |
Death* | Andrew died on 31 December 1928 in San Diego, San Diego Co., California, at age 76.2 |
Burial* | He was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in San Diego, San Diego Co., California. Joint headstone photo available at Find A Grave.2 |

Joseph D. Mulford1,2
M, #8691, b. 5 August 1853, d. 2 January 1930
Birth* | Joseph, son of Russell Bigelow Mulford and Melissa B. Valentine, was born on 5 August 1853 in Ohio. Informant on Joe's death certificate is H Mulford, likely his son Henry. Joe is incorrectly widowed, and his father is incorrectly identified as David Mulford. It's odd that wife Hattie, enumerated separately, also claims to be widowed.3,4,2,5 |
Census1860 | Joseph appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Quincy, Logan Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Russell Bigelow Mulford and Melissa B. Valentine, as 6 yo Joseph.2 |
Census1870 | Joseph appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Union, Hardin Co., Iowa in the household of his parents, Russell Bigelow Mulford and Melissa B. Valentine, as 17 yo Joseph.6 |
Census1880* | A person who may be Joseph D. Mulford appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Rock Island Co., Illinois, as 26 yo single farm laborer Joseph Mulford in the household of 25 yo Allen & 19 yo Cassie Sayre. Joe's parents correctly shown both born in Ohio.5 |
CensusNF1 | Joseph appeared on the 1885 Kansas State census of Sheridan, Cowley Co., Kansas, in the household of his parents, Russell Bigelow Mulford and Melissa B. Valentine, as 31 yo Joseph Mulford.7 |
Marriage* | He married Hattie Lewis circa 1885. My preliminary research suggests their children were Allen Joseph (1886-1918), and Henry Mulford (1888-1942, m. Lillian Lnu). Married 15 years with 2 born & 2 living in 1900.8,1 |
Residence* | Joseph and Hattie resided in Pierce Co., Washington, on 1 April 1889. Their children 3 yo J A & 1 yo Henry Mulford were listed as living with them.9 |
Census1900 | Joseph and Hattie appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Lake City, Pierce Co., Washington, enumerated 27 June 1900, as 47 yo farmer Joseph D & 38 yo wife Hattie L Mulford. Their children 14 yo Allen J, and 10 yo Hervey Mulford were listed as living with them, as well as one boarder.1 |
Census1910* | Joseph and Hattie appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Lake City, Pierce Co., Washington, enumerated 19 April 1910, as 56 yo farmer J D & 48 yo wife Hattie Mulford. Their children 24 yo Allen & 21 yo Henry (or Hervy) were listed as living with them.10 |
Milit-Service* | Joseph D. Mulford served as a private with the US Marine Corps during WWI between 1917 and 1918. He, of Tacoma, WA, was reported severely wounded on 29 Sep 1918 in the Spokane newspaper. His middle initial is wrong but it fits well otherwise.11 |
Death* | Joseph died on 2 January 1930 in near Parkland, Pierce Co., Washington, at age 76.3,12,13 |
Burial* | He was buried at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington. No headstone photo. Where did the spelling Mulferd come from?.14,15 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 19 March 2021 re research challenges. I've found no direct marriage record though the circumstantial evidence is compelling. They're together with their two sons in 1900 and 1910. Then comes WWI. I believe the record from the Spokane newspaper showing Joseph severely wounded is this man even though the middle initial is wrong. Post-war we no longer find Joe & Hattie living together. She shows up in 1920 and 1930 as HOH but Joe goes missing. I'd like to discover what happened to him from the end of WWI until his death. |

William Russell Mulford1,2
M, #8693, b. circa 1859, d. 6 April 1920
Birth* | William, son of Russell Bigelow Mulford and Melissa B. Valentine, was born circa 1859 in Logan Co., Ohio. His m3 marriage record with Ida shows his parents as R B Mulford & Elizabeth Bonndland! Not sure what to make of that. Find A Grave claims Feb 1861 but that doesn't jive with him being 1 yo in the 1860 census.3,2,1 |
Census1860 | William appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Quincy, Logan Co., Ohio in the household of his parents, Russell Bigelow Mulford and Melissa B. Valentine, as 1 yo Wm R.2 |
Census1870 | William appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Union, Hardin Co., Iowa in the household of his parents, Russell Bigelow Mulford and Melissa B. Valentine, as 12 yo Wm.4 |
Marriage* | He married Mary Leanna Shorter in 1879. My preliminary research suggests their children were Charles (1881-1917), James Elmer (1884-1962, m. Mary Ellen Jones Rogers 1908 in OK), George E (1885- , m. Ruth M Altaffer 1916 in IA), Theo Blanche (1887-1971, m. John D Stewart 1906 in KS), Pearl Jane (1889-1977, m. Eli H Medlam 1907 in KS), and Walter Alva Mulford (1893- ). My preliminary research suggests Ida May's children from her prior marriage were Grace E Spencer (1894-1984), and Ernest Clyde Spencer (1899- ).5,6,1 |
Census1880 | William and Mary appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Sheridan Twp., Cowley Co., Kansas, enumerated 3 June 1880, as 21 yo farmer William & 17 yo wife Mary Mulford. William's parents live next door.7 |
CensusNF1 | William appeared on the 1885 Kansas State census of Sheridan, Cowley Co., Kansas, in the household of his parents, Russell Bigelow Mulford and Melissa B. Valentine, as 25 yo Wm Mulford.8 |
CensusNF1* | William and Mary appeared on the 1895 Kansas State census of Cowley Co., Kansas, enumerated 1895, as 35 yo William & 32 yo Mary Mulford.. Their children 13 yo Charles, 11 yo Elmer, 10 yo Geo, 7 yo Theo, 5 yo Jane, and 2 yo Walter A. Mulford were living with them.9 |
Marr-License* | William applied for a marriage license to wed America Lnu at Cowley Co., Kansas, in 1904.10 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 6 April 1904 re FamilySearch Trees claims. William's FSTrees entry (KLBX-388) claims he m2 America Saunders 06 Apr 1904 in Winfield, KS but provides no source and I've been unable to corroborate. His marriage record with Ida May does say it was his 3rd marriage. |
Marriage | He married America Lnu on 6 April 1904 in Cowley Co., Kansas.11 |
Marriage* | His third marriage was to Ida May Colbert on 13 May 1907 at Red Oak, Montgomery Co., Iowa. This is the third marriage for William, second marriage for Ida. George Ackles, likely William's sister's m2, provided the affadavit. The 1910 census shows married 3 years with 8 born & 7 living.12,3,13 |
Census1910* | William and Ida appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Red Oak Ward 1, Montgomery Co., Iowa, enumerated 14 May 1910, as 45 yo laborer William & 39 yo wife Ida Mulford. Two step-children are living with them: namely, 15 yo Grace & 12 yo Earl Spencer.14 |
Census1920* | William appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Red Oak Ward 1, Montgomery Co., Iowa, enumerated 15 January 1920, as 57 yo Will M Mulford. His sister Sarah and her husband George were living with him.15 |
Death* | William died on 6 April 1920 in Red Oak, Montgomery Co., Iowa.16 |
