Thomas Porter1
M, #6431, b. 22 July 1730, d. 1833
Birth* | Thomas, son of Nathaniel Porter and Joanna Smith, was born on 22 July 1730 in Farmington, Hartford Co., Connecticut Colony, New England.2 |
Marriage* | He married Beulah Minor, daughter of John Minor and Elizabeth Lnu, on 24 July 1754 at Congregational Church in Bethlehem, Litchfield Co., Connecticut. History of Woodbury is interesting in that it shows this couple in two places - "Marriages in Woodbury" and "Marriages in Bethlehem", with same date in each case. Minor-Miner claims Woodbury. Maxey & Dappen writes, "The possibility exists that Thomas had two wives with the same surname that was not uncommon". Two marriages are shown, first to Beulah Minor on 29 Aug 1734 in Woodbury, then to an unnamed woman on 24 Jul 1754 in Bethlehem. This contradicts Cothren's book. Cothren, on pp. 184 & 233, shows a marriage for a Thomas Porter and Elizabeth Hurd on 25 Dec 1752 in Woodbury. Perhaps this is the phantom m1.3,2,1 |
Residence* | Thomas and Beulah resided in Wyoming Co., Connecticut Colony (now Pennsylvania), New England, circa 1774. Maxey & Dappen writes, "Thomas and his family were part of a CT settlement in Wyoming County in what is now Pennsylvania. In 1774 the valley was claimed as a part of CT as the county of Westmoreland. This area was contested between CT and Pennsylvania for a number of years before the CT faction took control of the area. CT claimed the area from the land grant to the Duke of Lenox from King Charles I in 1620 that gave the Duke "All that part of America lying and being in length from forty degrees of north latitude to the forty-eighth." This grant was confirmed by royal patent from Charles II on April 20, 1662. Later Charles II granted William Penn the same land. The New England settlers claimed Wyoming under the grant of 1662 while those from Pennsylvania the same land under the grant of 1681. This dispute was not settled until after the Revolutionary War. At the time of the Revolutionary War approximately three to four thousand people lived in this area along the Susquehanna River near what is now Wilkes-Barre in Luzerne and Wyoming Counties".4 |
Milit-Service* | Thomas Porter served as a private with the Wyoming Valley Company, Continental Line during the Revolutionary War between 1776 and 1777. Maxey & Dappen writes, "He was described as being 46 years of age, and is 5' 4" in height. It states that he was discharged July 8th, but does not say which year (probably 1777). Thomas was listed on the unit muster for Receipt Roll for Bounty on September 21, 1776 in Westmoreland and on February 10, 1777 in Summerset County (New Jersey). There is no record of him receiving a pension for his service during the Revolutionary War".4 |
Death* | Thomas died in 1833 in Granville, Washington Co., New York. Death dates are all over the board, from 1800 in Harpersfield, NY (www.cookfamily.org) to 1832 in Switzerland County (also www.cookfamily.org) to 1833 in Granville, NY (Maxey & Dappen).2 |

Justice Porter1,2
M, #6434, b. 6 June 1755, d. 20 January 1777
Birth* | Justice, son of Thomas Porter and Beulah Minor, was born on 6 June 1755 in Woodbury, Litchfield Co., Connecticut Colony, New England. Minor-Miner claims Stratford.3 |
Milit-Service* | Justice Porter served as a private with the Wyoming Valley Company, Continental Line during the Revolutionary War between 1776 and 1777. Maxey & Dappen writes, "Private Justice Porter was 21 years old and 5'7" and he was killed on January 20, 1777. He was listed on the unit muster for Receipt Roll for Bounty on September 21, 1776 in Westmoreland. That was the only information found in his military file. Justice was probably killed in New Jersey after the Wyoming Valley companies joined General Washington's army. The Wyoming Valley Company under the command of Captain Durkee saw action during the Battle of Millstone River (or Van Nest Mills) in SomersetCo., NJ on January 20, 1777 so there is a strong possibility that Justice was killed during that engagement. According to an anonymous letter published in the Pennsylvania Journal and the Weekly Advertiser (Philadelphia) on January 29, 1777 approximately 50 Pennsylvanians (most likely soldiers from at least one of the Wyoming Companies) took part in the battle along with New Jersey militia near present day Manville, SomersetCo., NJ. Another possibility is that Justice died from smallpox. An epidemic broke out in the Morristown winter encampment that claimed its first casualty on January 11, 1777. The dead from the epidemic, including several unknown casualties, were buried in the cemetery of the Morristown Presbyterian Church located between Morris Street, North Park Place, and Spring Street".1 |
Death* | Justice died on 20 January 1777 at age 21.1 |

Jacob Gilbert Vandegrift1,2
M, #6450, b. 1731, d. 2 October 1789
Birth* | Jacob, son of Leonard Vandegrift and Lydia Lnu, was born in 1731 in New Castle Co., Pennsylvania Colony (now Delaware), New England.2 |
Estate-Will | Jacob was named executor and an heir in the will of Leonard Vandegrift, his father, dated 29 August 1769 at New Castle Co., Pennsylvania Colony (now Delaware), New England.3,4 |
Death* | Jacob died on 2 October 1789 in Knox Co., Tennessee.2 |
Burial* | He was buried at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Liberty, DeKalb Co., Tennessee.2 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 6 April 2020 re FSTrees. I'm suspicious of the FSTrees entry (entry for Jacob Gilbert Vandergriff (1731–1789), ID no. LBMQ-NB9) which makes this man the son of Leonard & Lydia Susan Vandegrift. First, of the 534 Vandegrifts (and related spellings) in my database not one has the given or middle name Gilbert. Perhaps it came from his purported mother's side of the family. Second, I have no one who spelled their surname Vandergriff as it is spelled in both the FSTrees and Find A Grave entries. Third, I have no other Vandegrifts who moved south into Tennessee. They all were in either Bucks Co., PA or New Castle Co., DE before migrating west. On the other hand three of the four children purported by Find A Grave have very common Vandegrift names - Christopher, Jacobsen and Leonard. Both FSTrees and Find A Grave show his wife as Sarah Elizabeth Britton (1732-1828). Find A Grave's lists four children: namely, Christopher Jacobsen, Garrett Jacobsen, Leonard and Gilbert Vandergriff. FSTrees adds Rebecca, John, Ann, Sarah and Hannah Vandergrift. Until some corroborating evidence is found I'm leaving purported spouse and children out of the data set.2 |
