Sarah Lnu1

F, #5534, b. 29 January 1839, d. 2 January 1904
Last Edited17 Feb 2025
Birth*Sarah was born on 29 January 1839 in Frederick Co., Maryland. The 1870 census says she was born in PA. Whether the A initial in her name at Find A Grave is first letter of her middle or maiden name is unclear.2,1
Marriage*She married Benjamin Franklin Bartlett, son of Capt. Prescott Bartlett and Narcissa Robinson, between 1860 and 1870. I have not yet found a marriage record for this couple, having looked in FamilySearch databases for Illinois and Pennsylvania. In the 1870 census their relationship is not noted but in the 1880 they are specifically husband & wife.1
Census1870*Sarah and Benjamin appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Sublette Twp., Lee Co., Illinois, enumerated 2 July 1870, as 49 yo carpenter Benjamin & 30 yo Sarah Bartlett. Their children Charles E. and Jessie K. were listed as living with them. Ben is almost certainly the right person - he's back from the war, 1 year younger than I'd like to see but still a carpenter, still born Massachusetts. Son Charles is the right age and birthstate.
Two others in the household were 11 yo William (is this really Austin) and 3 yo Charles (two children named Charles in same houshold). The younger Charles born in PA, same as Sarah.1
Census1880Sarah and Benjamin appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Township 11, Gove Co., Kansas, at T12 R26, enumerated 9 June 1880, as 56 yo carpenter Franklin & 41 yo wife Sarah Bartlett. Their daughter Jessie K. was listed as living with them.3
Census1900*Sarah appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Collyer, Trego Co., Kansas, enumerated 20 June 1900, as 61 yo widow Sarah (W?) Bartlett, b. Jan 1839 in Maryland, two children with one living. No doubt this is the correct person.4
Death*Sarah died on 2 January 1904 in Collyer, Trego Co., Kansas, at age 64.2
Burial*She was buried at Union Cemetery in Collyer, Trego Co., Kansas. Find A Grave provides headstone photo.2

MotherSarah Lnu2 b. 29 Jan 1839, d. 2 Jan 1904
Last Edited17 Feb 2025
ResearchNote*Research Note of 17 February 2025 re Who was Jessie's mother? The 1870 and 1880 censuses support a woman named Sarah. Jessie's Find A Grave memorial has an image of her Missouri death certificate and it shows her parents as Benjamin F Bartlett and Harriet Slackey. The informant was her Jessie's daughter Clara, as Mrs. J. Ben Searcy of Eminence, MO, who ought to know her own grandmother's name. I've been unable to find a marriage record for Ben and Sarah. There are some for a Ben and Harriet but they do not appear to be this man.3

Birth*Jessie, daughter of Benjamin Franklin Bartlett and Sarah Lnu, was born on 14 May 1868 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.1,2
Census1870Jessie appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Sublette Twp., Lee Co., Illinois in the household of her parents, Benjamin Franklin Bartlett and Sarah Lnu, as 0.2 yo Jessie Bartlett.2
Census1880Jessie appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Township 11, Gove Co., Kansas in the household of her parents, Benjamin Franklin Bartlett and Sarah Lnu, as 10 yo daughter Jessie Bartlett.4
BioNote*Biography Note: Jessie m. Charles Randolph Pearson in 1894. My preliminary research suggests their children were Charles B Pearson (c1895- ), Elsbeth Pearson (c1899- ) and Clara A Pearson (1905-1976, m1 George L Selch, m2 Judge Jefferson Benjamin Searcy 1945.)1
Death*Jessie died on 27 December 1950 in Rolla, Phelps Co., Missouri, at age 82.1
Burial*She was buried at Hoxie Cemetery in Hoxie, Sheridan Co., Kansas. Find A Grave provides obit & death certificate but NO headstone photo.1
