Last Edited28 Mar 2023
Birth*Hugh, son of John Wilson Reynolds and Margaret Benson Reynolds, was born on 30 November 1847 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.3,2
Census1850Hugh appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Northern Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia in the household of his parents, John Wilson Reynolds and Margaret Benson Reynolds, as 2 yo Hugh Reynolds.2
Census1860Hugh appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Northern Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia in the household of his parents, John Wilson Reynolds and Margaret Benson Reynolds, as 12 yo Hugh K Reynolds.4
Marriage*He married Sarah Catherine Wood on 1 December 1870 in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. My preliminary research suggests their children were Jane Toy (1873-1962, m. William Pearson Booth), Mary Matilda (1874-1962, m. Irey Artman), Lillie Goode (1878-1967, m. Monroe Burl Southard), Charles Wilson (1877-1972, m. Laura N Scruggs), Annie B (1879-1892), William A (1881-1946, m. Jennie C Newton), Etta May (c1884- , m. Troy Field Dallas), and Kate Geneva (1888-1970, m. William Jackson Harris).
Two other possible issue were Mary M (1851- , m. Jno D Hairfield), and Sarah Elizabeth Reynolds (1865-1940). They are both no-shows in the census records.5,6
Census1880Hugh and Sarah appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Callands Magisterial Dist., Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, enumerated 3 June 1880, as 32 yo farmer C H & 29 yo wife Sarah C. Reynolds. Their children Jane Toy (as 7 yo Janie T), Mary Matilda (as 6 yo Mary M), Lillie Goode (as 4 yo Lillie G), Charles Wilson (as 2 yo Charles W) and Annie B (as 0.2 yo Ann B) Reynolds were listed as living with them. In addition there were five servants.7
Census1900*Hugh and Sarah appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Danville Ward 2, Virginia, enumerated 2 June 1900, as 54 yo drayman H Cau (Car) & 49 yo wife Sarah C Reynolds, along with 8 children and 1 boarder. The children were Jennie, Mary M., Lillie G., Chas W., Annie B., Willie M., Etta M. and Hadie G. Reynolds.8
Census1910Hugh and Sarah appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Danville, Virginia, enumerated 19 April 1910, as 63 yo Hughy C & 59 yo wife Sarah C Reynolds. This is a confusing enumeration. After Hugh & Sarah we get their three daughter Jane, Lillie and Kate. Jane's surname is Booth and her husband is down several rows. Lillie's surname is Southard. She's shown married, not divorced, but her husband is missing. Four of their children are listed, as grandchildren of Hugh & Sarah: namely, as Annie, Curtis, Katherine and Southard. Katie is shown with surname Southard also but it's clear from 'years married' that William J Harris, several rows down, is her husband. Their son Garland Harris is in the household. Other than that just one gardener.9
Death*Hugh died on 1 April 1911 at age 63.3
Burial*He was buried at Green Hill Cemetery in Danville, Virginia. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.3
