Elijah Cramer1

M, #6631, b. circa 1834, d. from 27 August 1864 to 28 October 1864
Last Edited24 Feb 2024
Birth*Elijah was born circa 1834 in Ohio. Surname spelled Kramer in some records.1
Marriage*He married Catherine Moore, daughter of Edward Moore and Sarah "Sallie" Andereck, on 27 January 1859 in Franklin Co., Ohio. My preliminary research suggests their children may have been Robert C Cramer (c1863- ) and Benjamin H Cramer (). The former is in the 1870 census with Catherine, the latter on her Civil War widow's pension application.2,1
Census1860Elijah appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Canal Winchester, Fairfield Co., Ohio, as 26 yo Elijah Cramer in the household of his parents-in-law Edward Moore and Sarah "Sallie" Andereck; as 56 yo farmer Edward & 54 yo Sarah Moore.1
Milit-Service*Elijah Cramer served as a Private with Co. B, 113th Ohio Infantry during the Civil War from 1 February 1864 to 27 August 1864. His widow Catharine applied for a pension 28 Oct 1864 based on his service, also naming son Benjamin H Kramer who filed 10 Mar 1875.3,4
Death*Elijah died from 27 August 1864 to 28 October 1864, of disease. The earlier date is his muster out, the latter the date his widow applied for a service pension. Ancestry's SchultzClark tree claims he died at 2nd Division 14th A. C. Hospital, Marietta, Georgia but provides no supporting evidence.4
Burial*He was buried at Marietta National Cemetery in Marietta, Cobb Co., Georgia.3

Elizabeth Bower 6632
Last Edited28 Apr 2024
Birth*Elizabeth was born in 1799 in Bowling Green Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania, d/o Peter and Anna Catherine (Nicodemus) Bower.2
Marriage*She married Benjamin Courson Jr., son of Rev. Benjamin Courson and Sarah Dungan, on 22 September 1820 in Licking Co., Ohio.1
Census1840Elizabeth is probably the female age 40 to 49 listed in the household of her husband, Benjamin Courson Jr., in the 1840 Federal Census of Vermillion Twp., Vermilion Co., Indiana.3
Census1850Elizabeth and Benjamin appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Vermillion Twp., Vermilion Co., Indiana, enumerated 31 August 1850, as 55 yo farmer Benj & 44 yo Eliza Coursen. Their children Catherine, Lucinda, Nancy Jane and Sarilda were listed as living with them, as well as 3 yo unknown Maria Jones.4
Census1860*Elizabeth and Benjamin appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Red Rock, Marion Co., Iowa, enumerated 20 July 1860, as 68 yo farmer Benjamin & 54 yo Elisabeth Coursen, as well as two unidentified persons, perhaps grandchildren, 9 yo Elvira Coursen and 7 yo George Coursen.5
ResearchNote*Research Note of 31 May 2017 re Find A Grave. Elizabeth's memorial says,
Written by Elizabeth's GGG granddaughter, Findagrave member, jms105
I am searching for the burial location of Elizabeth Bowers Courson. In the Iowa Census of l885 she was living with her son-in-law and daughter, Gordon Lambert and Nancy Jane (Courson) Mullins in Valley Township, Polk County, Iowa. Family history also states that she lived with her daughter, Lucinda Courson Hollingsworth in Red Rock, Marion, Iowa, after the death of her husband, Benjamin, so she may have gone back and forth between her children's homes. Elizabeth died between June 25 and July 5, 1888 according to official government documents that a Courson family member has obtained. Her husband, Benjamin Courson, is buried at Red Rock Cemetery, Otley, Marion County, Iowa, but there is no headstone there for Elizabeth. I do not believe she would have been buried there in an unmarked grave, as her daughter and son-in-law were quite well off financially. She could have died in either Dallas County where the Mullins' eventually settled, or in Marion County, the location of Red Rock, Iowa at that time. I hope to eventually locate the county of her death through courthouse records.
Elizabeth bowers was born to Peter Bowers and Anna Catharine Nicodemus in Bowling Green Township, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania in 1799. She was married at the age of 21 to Benjamin Courson, Jr. on September 22, 1820 in Licking County, Ohio. Benjamin and Elizabeth continued living in Ohio about 15 years, eventually moving to Rush Creek Township, Logan County, Ohio, around 1833 where their daughter Lucinda was born in 1935. Benjamin may have been the first constable there. They then moved to Newport, Vermilion County, Indiana, and then lastly to Red Rock, Marion County, Iowa, in 1854. Her husband, Benjamin, died in 1864. Benjamin and Elizabeth were the parents of ten children according to a document dated May 5, 1879, of which seven were still living. The known seven children are: Catherine (Courson) Jones, Alexander (who also went by Alexandria), Jeremiah George, Mary A. (Courson) Norris, Lucinda (Courson) Hollingsworth, Nancy Jane (Courson) Mullins, and Sarilda Courson.2

Death*Elizabeth died in 1888 in Marion Co., Iowa.2

Birth*Sarilda, daughter of Benjamin Courson Jr. and Elizabeth Bower, was born in 1841 in Vermillion Co., Indiana. Her given name may have been Savilla. Find A Grave writes, "She only appears in the US Census of l850 in Vermillion County and cannot be located in future censuses. However, family records from 1879 state that seven of the ten total Courson children born to Benjamin and Elizabeth were still living at that date, and that would have included Sarilda. It is believed she lived in Red Rock, Marion County, Iowa, with her family, as they came to that location in 1854, but I have not been able to locate her in that location. It is unknown if she ever married and her burial location is also unknown".2
