Bertha Louise Fletcher1,2

F, #9964, b. circa 1891
Last Edited23 Sep 2022
Birth*Bertha was born circa 1891 in Massachusetts, d/o Albert A Fletcher & Maud Tripp.2,3
Marriage*She married Thomas Allen Hoxsey, son of Robert Alex Hoxsey and Florence Virinda Myers, on 11 July 1917 in Spokane, Spokane Co., Washington. This is the 2nd marriage for both Thomas & Bertha. He is widower. She was divorced from her m1 Wheeler. FSTrees claims without citation that Thomas's m1's name was Mary Isabelle Hollingsworth. I can find no evidence for this marriage.2
Census1920*Bertha and Thomas appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Spokane, Spokane Co., Washington, enumerated 3 January 1920, as 45 yo plow company laborer Thomas A & 29 yo wife Bertha Hoxsey. Their children (step-daughters to Thomas) 8 yo Francis Maurine & 6 yo Helen Louese Wheeler were listed as living with them, as well as one roomer.3
Marr-Divorce*Bertha was divorced from Thomas Allen Hoxsey from 3 January 1920 to 11 June 1924. Thomas & Bertha were together in Spokane on the earlier date. He's in Portland on the latter. I find no voter registration in Portland for Bertha so conclude 1924 is a safe late year for the divorce. Thomas is specifically divorced in the 1930 census.3,4

Last Edited9 Oct 2022
Birth*Medor was born between 1846 and 1847 in Canada, s/o Lewis Shapey.1,2,3
Immigration*Medor immigrated to the United States on 4 September 1880, from Canada, processed by Court District of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.4
Marriage*He married Mary Ellen "Ella" Myers, daughter of James Hanna Myers and Minerva Ann "Mary" Britton, on 4 July 1909 in Bourbon Co., Kansas. The 1910 census confirms married zero years. Both Medor and Ella say this is their m2, though in fact it's Ella's m3 and perhaps Medor's m3, too. Ella shows 3 born and 3 living which is odd. Perhaps Medor's children were listed as Ella's. Medor's m1 was probably Mary "Polly" Rushford, married 03 Dec 1865 in Fairfax, Vermont. Her Find A Grave memorial is no. 74985593. They are living together in several Fort Scott city directories 1900-1908. A death record likely to be hers is just below Medor's (as Mador) in Knights and Ladies of Security/Security Benefit Association--Index to Death Claims. She died 26 Feb 1909.1,5,3,2
Census1910*Medor and Mary appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Fort Scott, Bourbon Co., Kansas, enumerated 23 April 1910, as 63 yo railroad shop foreman painter Meador & 50 yo wife Ella Sheppy. Medor's 17 yo son Bert Sheppy was listed as living with them.2
Death*Medor died on 30 January 1911.3
Burial*He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Scott, Bourbon Co., Kansas.3

Bessie Fromson1

F, #9979, b. 16 April 1900
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Bessie was born on 16 April 1900.1
Marriage*She married Walter Daniel Myers Sr., son of Daniel Newton Myers and Martha E. Gaither, on 26 January 1919 in Jackson Co., Missouri. License dated 25 January. Bessie's brother Jacob D Fromson was bondsman. Bessie's surname is Hull suggesting a prior marriage. My preliminary research suggests their only child was Walter Daniel Myers Jr (1926- ).1
Census1920*Bessie and Walter appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri, as 22 yo electric company testing engineer brother-in-law Walter D & 18 yo sister-in-law [sic] Bessie Meyers in the household of Bessie's brother Jacob D & wife Margaret Fromson.2
ResearchNote*Research Note of 19 June 2020 re census analysis. In the 1920 census 18 yo Bessie & 22 yo Walter are living in the household of 34 yo Jacob D & 29 yo Margaret Fromson as sister-in-law [sic] and brother-in-law.
In the 1930 census 29 yo Bessie & 33 yo Walter are now head of household. Their son Walter is living with them, as well as 43 yo Jacob D & 38 yo Margaret Fromson, this time as father- and mother-in-law.
Clearly Jacob cannot be both Bessie's brother and father. Jacob's age makes brother much more likely. Margaret's age makes being her mother out of the question (11 yo when Bessie was born!).
Additional research needed.3,2

Census1930Bessie and Walter appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri, enumerated 7 May 1930, as 33 yo construction superintendent Walter D & 29 yo wife Bessie Myers. Their 4.5 yo son Walter D Myers was listed as living with them, as well as Bessie's 43 yo father (as father-in-law) Jacob D Fromson, his 38 yo wife (as mother-in-law) Margaret, and their three children, Leonard, Leo and Dorette Fromson.
See ResearchNote attached to Bessie for analysis of her kin.3

Birth*Nellie, daughter of Charles Henry More and Sarah Catherine Myers, was born on 4 December 1892 in Kansas.2,1
Census1900Nellie appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Pittsburg, Crawford Co., Kansas in the household of her parents, Charles Henry More and Sarah Catherine Myers, as 7 yo daughter Nellie Moore.2
Marriage*She married Henry Clayton Suggs Jr. on 11 February 1909 in Carthage, Joplin Co., Missour. My preliminary research suggests their children were Ollie Leeroy Suggs (1909-1982, m1 Wilma B Sloan, res. Coffeyville, KS 1930, m2 Virginia Merle Peterson), Henry Suggs (1911- , perhaps m. Judith Vlasie), Violet Gertrude Suggs (1914-1974, m. Frank LoChiano), and Velma Victoria Suggs (1919- , perhaps m. Lenward B Smith).
Both Henry & Nellie were of Fort Scott on their Missouri marriage license. The 1910 census says married 2 years w/ 1 born and 1 living.
FSTrees claims Henry m1 Pearl Leona Wolfe in 1900 and had issue Viola Elsie (1901-1987), Daisy Mildred (1903-1984), and Rolland Clayton Suggs (1906-1945).3,4,1
ResearchNote*Research Note of 22 June 2020 re obits. The obits for both Henry & Nellie say they had four children. I have listed them in the marriage tag as Ollie Leeroy, Henry, Violet Gertrude, and Velma Victoria Suggs. There is adequate evidence to support all four names.
However there's one puzzling person, Howard D Luckey, who claims Henry & Nellie as his parents in his Montana marriage record. I find a 20 yo lodger Henry Suggs in the 1930 census in the home of Fred & Florence Nather in Kessler, Montana. His age is good but birthstate is MO rather than KS. Close enough. Best guess is that Howard D Luckey is Henry Suggs. Whether he changed his name or it's a simple transcription error remains unclear.5

Census1910*Nellie and Henry appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Baker Twp., Crawford Co., Kansas, enumerated 21 April 1910, as 30 yo coal mine driver Henery & 17 yo wife Melle N Sugges. Their 1 yo son Ollie Leeroy Sugges was listed as living with them.4
Residence*Nellie and Henry resided in Pittsburg, Crawford Co., Kansas, in 1914.6
CensusNF1*Nellie and Henry appeared on the 1915 Kansas State Census of Pittsburg, Crawford Co., Kansas, enumerated 1915, as 35 yo Henry & 22 yo Nellie Suggs. Their children 6 yo Ollie, 4 yo Henry and 1 yo Violet Suggs were listed as living with them.7
Death*Nellie died on 14 January 1919 at YMCA Hospital in Pittsburg, Crawford Co., Kansas, at age 26, of pneumonia following influenza. Her headstone was carved wrong and says 04 January but the obituary record makes it clear she died 14 Jan, 12 days after her husband.8,9,1
Burial*She was buried at Mount Olive Cemetery in Pittsburg, Crawford Co., Kansas. Joint headstone photo is available at Find A Grave.1

Harland's death certificate, Find A Grave memorial, and SSDI records all say 26 March 1892. The census record supports ca. 1895 much better than 1892. His sister Nellie was born in 1892 and I've found no evidence that they were twins.4,1,5
Census1900Harland appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Pittsburg, Crawford Co., Kansas in the household of his parents, Charles Henry More and Sarah Catherine Myers, as 5 yo son Harlin Moore.4
Census1910Harland appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of San Francisco, San Francisco Co., California in the household of his parents, Charles Henry More and Sarah Catherine Myers, as 16 yo son H M More.6
Milit-Service*MSgt. Harland Marion More Sr. served as Master Sergeant with the US Army during WWI and WWII from 6 April 1917 to 30 September 1949. His death certifcate says only 'retired military, US Army'. Sister Nellie's obit of 1919 calls him Lt. Hiram Moore, stationed in El Paso.7,1,8
Marriage*His first marriage was to Sara Merle "Nannie" Miller before 1919, date based on birthyear of eldest child listed by Find A Grave. My preliminary research suggests their children were Mary Marian More (1919-2001, m. Floyd T Cook), Hazel Gwendolyn More (1920-2003, m. Alton W Hutson, m2 Fincher?), Pauline Margaret More (1923-2003, m. Patrick L King 1944), Essie Lois "Losie" More (1925-2004, m1 Frank S Roberts, m2 Thomas P Miller), Lillian Louise "Weezie" More (1926-2009, m. John Paul Elliott 1953), and Harland Marion "Sonny" More Jr (1929-1931). All five daughters were listed as surviving him in his death announcement of 28 Jan 1973, though not by name.5,9,10
MoveHarland and Sara moved their residence to Honolulu from 6 July 1920 to 11 July 1920, as Hawaiian Replacement Troops aboard USAT Great Northern. Their daughter Hazel was born in Hawaii in 1920 so it's clear Sara moved, though whether with the troops or by separate conveyance is unknown. Harland's rank at the time was Hospital Sergeant.11
Residence*Harland resided in Texas on 20 December 1921. He's mentioned as a surviving son in his father's obit of 20 Dec 1921.12
Residence*Harland and Sara resided in Mirando City, Webb Co., Texas, on 28 June 1929. Harland's occupation was carpenter.9
Census1930*Harland and Sara appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Pct. 5, Webb Co., Texas, enumerated 4 April 1930, as 35 yo oil company carpenter Harland M & 35 yo wife Sara M More. Their children 10 yo daughter Marion M, 9 yo Hazel G, 7 yo Pauline M, 5 yo Essie Lois, 3 yo Louise L, and 0.9 yo Harland M More Jr were listed as living with them.13
Marr-Divorce*Harland was divorced from an unknown person before 26 October 1934.2
Marriage*His second marriage was to Sylvia King on 26 October 1934 at Santa Ana, Orange Co., CaliforniaG. CA County Marriages shows both parties as divorced, this being the 2nd marriage for each.2
Occupation*Harland and Sylvia King were both nurses on 26 October 1934.2
Residence*Harland and Sylvia resided at 143 Manzanita in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California, in 1936. Harland's occupation was nurse.14
Marriage*His third marriage was to Frances Tarvin before 30 April 1940.15
Census1940*Harland and Frances appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Laredo, Webb Co., Texas, enumerated 30 April 1940, as 43 yo dairy manager Frances & 45 yo US Army hospital Sergeant Harlan Moore. Frances's 71 yo widowed mother Patience & 29 yo sister Therese Tarvin were listed as living with them.15
