Anna Nims Bartlett1,2
F, #11161, b. 1847, d. 22 April 1921
Birth* | Anna, daughter of Franklin Bartlett and Esther Cooley Anderson, was born in 1847 in Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts.1,2 |
Census1850 | Anna appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts in the household of her parents, Franklin Bartlett and Esther Cooley Anderson, as 3 yo Ann Bartlett.2 |
Census1860 | Anna appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts in the household of her parents, Franklin Bartlett and Esther Cooley Anderson, as 12 yo Ann N Bartlett.3 |
CensusNF1 | Anna appeared on the 1865 Massachusetts State Census of Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, in the household of her parents, Franklin Bartlett and Esther Cooley Anderson, as 17 yo Anna Bartlett.4 |
Marriage* | She married Mason William Dodge on 28 March 1866 in Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts. Find A Grave says 1866. Her Springfield Weekly obit says 18 Mar 1867. Her Transcript-Telegram obit says 29 Mar 1867. Her Greenfield Daily Recorder obit says 28 Mar 1867. MA Marriage Records, 1840-1915 says 28 Mar 1866. My preliminary research suggests their children were Belle Franklin Dodge (1870-1888), William Dodge (1870-b1916), Edward Mason Dodge (1873-1957, m. Mary Ann Billings), unnamed daughter Dodge (1884-1884), and Ruth Louise Dodge (1886-1886). In the 1870 they have one daughter, 0.1 yo Legetta B Dodge. This pretty much has to be Belle but makes little sense. Son William disappears after the 1880 and is presumed dead. The unnamed daughter's birth & death record is in FamilySearch's Massachusetts State Vital Records, 1841-1925 database. Ruth's middle name alleged to be Louise but the initial on her tombstone is E. The only 'for sure' child is son Edward Mason Dodge. .5,6,7,8,9 |
Census1870* | Anna and Mason appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 2 June 1870, as 26 yo carpenter M W & 23 yo Annie M Dodge. Their 0.1 yo daughter Legetta B Dodge was listed as living with them.10 |
Census1880 | Anna and Mason appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 15 June 1880, as 37 yo lumber teamster Mason W & 33 yo Anna M Dodge. Their sons 10 yo William and 6 yo Edward Dodge were listed as living with them.11 |
Census1900 | Anna and Mason appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 18 June 1900, as 57 yo carpenter Mason W & 53 yo Anna N Dodge.12 |
Census1910 | Anna and Mason appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 2 June 1910, as 67 yo carpenter Mason W & 65 yo wife Anna N Dodge. One lodger was listed as living with them.13 |
Census1920* | Anna appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, as 72 yo widowed mother Anna N Dodge in the household of her son & daughter-in-law 46 yo farmer Edward M & 42 yo Mary A Dodge.14 |
Death* | Anna died on 22 April 1921 at home of her son Edward Dodge in South Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts.8,15,6,1 |
Burial* | She was buried at Brookside Cemetery in Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts. Find A Grave provides photo of joint headstone with husband Mason & daughter Belle.1 |

Halleck H. Bartlett1
M, #11166, b. 27 July 1852, d. 21 November 1927
Birth* | Halleck, son of Lyman Bartlett and Elizabeth Russell Swain, was born on 27 July 1852 in New Bedford, Bristol Co., Massachusetts. Find A Grave claims 27 Jul 1858. His headstone appears to say that but with contrast enhancement it appears to say 27 Jul 1852. The 1900 census gives his age as 48 yo and birthdate as July 1851. FamilySearch's dB Massachusetts, Town Clerk, Vital and Town Records, 1626-2001 says 27 July 1852. There's another record in the same dB showing a birthdate of 21 Sep 1855 but if you look at the image it's 1852; just a bad index.3,4,5 |
Census1860 | Halleck appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of New Bedford, Bristol Co., Massachusetts in the household of his parents, Lyman Bartlett and Elizabeth Russell Swain, as 8 yo Halleck Bartlett.6 |
Census1870 | Halleck appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Worcester Ward 2, Worcester Co., Massachusetts in the household of his mother, Elizabeth Russell Swain, as 17 yo Hullak (indexed Nullah) Bartlett.7 |
Marriage* | He married Elizabeth Bacon on 16 November 1876 in prob. Worcester, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. My preliminary research suggests their children were Lyman Bartlett (1877-1958, m. Caroline Sharpless Hopkins 1908), Ethel Bartlett (1877-1912, m. Charles Rafello Henderson 1909 in NY), and Mary Louise Bartlett (1879-1880). Both Elizabeth & Halleck were from Worcester at the time of their marriage.8,4 |
Census1880 | Halleck appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Worcester, Worcester Co., Massachusetts in the household of her mother, Elizabeth Russell Swain, as 27 yo son Halleck Bartlett.9 |
Census1900* | Halleck and Elizabeth appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Windsor, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts, at 55 Elm St., enumerated 5 June 1900, as 48 yo bank treasurer Halleck & 46 yo wife Elizabeth Bartlett. Their children 22 yo Lyman & 22 yo Ethel Bartlett were listed as living with them (on the following census page). Others in the home were Halleck's 78 yo widowed mother Elizabeth R Bartlett, Elizabeth's sister 83 yo Mary Swain as aunt, and three servants.5 |
Census1910 | Halleck and Elizabeth appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Worcester Ward 10, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 22 April 1910, as 57 yo bank manager Halleck H. & 57 yo wife Elizabeth B Bartlett. One servant was listed as living with them.10 |
Census1920 | Halleck and Elizabeth appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Worcester Ward 10, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 13 January 1920, as 67 yo Halleck & 67 yo wife Elizabeth B Bartlett. Two servants were listed as living with them. Elizabeth shows up as a widow again in Worcester in the 1930 and 1940 censuses.11 |
Death* | Halleck died on 21 November 1927 in Worcester, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, at age 75.4 |
Burial* | He was buried at Worcester Rural Cemetery in Worcester, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. Find A Grave provides headstone photo.4 |

Mason William Dodge1,2
M, #11168, b. 29 March 1843, d. 30 May 1915
Birth* | Mason was born on 29 March 1843 in Hawley, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, s/o Hiram Dodge & Emeline Ruth Tobey, brother of Alonzo Tobey Dodge who married Anna's sister Martha Matilda. Middle name William (obit) or Williams (Find A Grave).1,2 |
CensusNF1 | Mason appeared on the 1865 Massachusetts State Census of Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, in the household of Franklin Bartlett and Esther Cooley Anderson, as 22 yo farmer Mason W Dodge. The following year he and Anna were married.3 |
Marriage* | He married Anna Nims Bartlett, daughter of Franklin Bartlett and Esther Cooley Anderson, on 28 March 1866 in Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts. The only 'for sure' child is son Edward Mason Dodge. .4,5,6,7,1 |
Census1870* | Mason and Anna appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 2 June 1870, as 26 yo carpenter M W & 23 yo Annie M Dodge. Their 0.1 yo daughter Legetta B Dodge was listed as living with them.8 |
Census1880 | Mason and Anna appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 15 June 1880, as 37 yo lumber teamster Mason W & 33 yo Anna M Dodge. Their sons 10 yo William and 6 yo Edward Dodge were listed as living with them.9 |
Census1900 | Mason and Anna appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 18 June 1900, as 57 yo carpenter Mason W & 53 yo Anna N Dodge.10 |
Census1910 | Mason and Anna appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 2 June 1910, as 67 yo carpenter Mason W & 65 yo wife Anna N Dodge. One lodger was listed as living with them.11 |
Death* | Mason died on 30 May 1915 at his home in South Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts, at age 72, of heart failure.2,1 |
Burial* | He was buried on 3 June 1915 at Brookside Cemetery in Deerfield, Franklin Co., Massachusetts. Find A Grave provides photo of joint headstone with wife Anna & daughter Belle.1,2 |

Irving William Bartlett Sr.1,2
M, #11175, b. July 1863, d. 1945
Birth* | Irving, son of Edwin Bartlett and Mary Elizabeth "Lettie" Smith, was born in July 1863 in Illinois.3,4 |
Census1870 | Irving appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Hanover, Cook Co., Illinois in the household of his parents, Edwin Bartlett and Mary Elizabeth "Lettie" Smith, as 7 yo Ervin Bartlett.5 |
ResearchNote* | Research Note of 13 November 2024 re Ethel's marriages and children. A snake pit of contradictions and name changes. I've entered the +4 children in hopes of better understanding these families. Here's my best guess as to how they all fit together. She m1 Thomas Williams in 1881 and had two children, Effie (b. 1884) and Ettie (b. ca. 1888). There's a marriage record and the 1885 Colorado census which support the marriage date and Effie's birth. Ettie is inferred from this marriage based on the 1900 census in which she's 12 yo. She m2 Irving Bartlett between 1890 and 1895. In the 1900 census she claims to have been married 10 years with none born and none living, but with three 'nieces' and one 'nephew' in the household, two of whom are Effie and Ettie. In the 1910 census she claims to have been married 15 years.3
|
Census1880 | Irving appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Hanover Twp., Cook Co., Illinois in the household of his parents, Edwin Bartlett and Mary Elizabeth "Lettie" Smith, as 16 yo son Erwin Bartlett.6 |
Marriage* | He married Ethel W. Hutchinson between 1890 and 1895. Find A Grave's year, without citation, is 1885.3,4 |
Census1900* | Irving and Ethel appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Denver, Arapahoe (now Denver) Co., Colorado, enumerated 9 June 1900, as 36 yo salesman Irving W & 35 yo wife Ethel Bartlett. Their children Effie Ione, Mary Etta "Dimple", Eva "Dimple" and Bartlett were listed as living with them. Note they were not listed as step-daughters, daughter and son, but rather as nieces and nephew. I believe Effie and Ettie were children of Ethel's m1 Thomas Williams, so were step-daughters, not nieces. Whether their surnames should have been Williams is unclear. Two year old 'niece' Ethel in 1900 is almost certainly the 12 yo daughter Eva D in 1910. One year old 'nephew' Bartlett Bartlett disappears from the record. Whether he was a son or an acutal nephew is unclear. The fact that Ethel claims 4 born and 4 living in 1910 suggest he may have been a nephew. Either way he likely died before 1910.3 |
Census1910 | Irving and Ethel appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Longmont, Boulder Co., Colorado, enumerated 6 May 1910, as 46 yo retail butcher Irving 45 yo wife Ethel M Bartlett. Their children Eva "Dimple" and Irving William were listed as living with them. Ethel acknowledges this is her 2nd marriage and shows 4 born with 4 living.7 |
Residence* | Irving and Ethel resided at 1401 3rd Ave. in Boulder, Boulder Co., Colorado, in 1916, as well as their children Eva and Irving W Bartlett Jr, both students. Irving's widowed mother Mary L Bartlett is also likely living with them, though her address is listed as 401 3rd Ave.8 |
Residence* | Irving resided at 1401 3rd Ave. in Longmont, Boulder Co., Colorado, on 12 September 1918. His son Irving Jr was registered for the draft at this same address. No mention of Ethel.1 |
Census1920 | Irving appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Jefferson Pct. No. 4, Park Co., Colorado, as 56 yo butcher shop owner Irving W Bartlett in the household of Andrew Lester Archer and Mary Etta "Dimple" Williams; as 33 yo hay farmer Andrew L & 31 yo wife Dimple Archer.9 |
Census1940* | Irving appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Jefferson Twp., Park Co., Colorado, enumerated 4 April 1940, as 77 yo widower Irving W Bartlett Sr. His son Irving and family live next door above.10 |
BioNote | Biography Note of 15 November 2024: Effie Bartlett Steven's obit in the Chicago Tribune lists her surviving siblings as Hettie Woodworth, Lee Landon, Irving and Hamilton Bartlett.11 |
Death* | Irving died in 1945.4 |
Burial* | He was buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Longmont, Boulder Co., Colorado. Find A Grave provides photo of joint headstone with wife Ethel.4 |

ResearchNote* | Research Note of 15 November 2024 re the Piddington Family Tree at FamilySearch. This tree has an entry for a Gary Hamilton Bartlett (1872-1958), s/o Edwin Bartlett and Eliza A Hamilton, h/o Sarah E Gaines, f/o Vivian E, Fern E, Edwin H, Alice Ruth, and Elizabeth Bartlett. The children are essentially correct but Hamilton's mother's name is wrong. Also I've not seen any record which gives any first name, let alone Gary. It goes off on several other tangents that don't make sense. |

Alfred L. Bartlett1,2
M, #11181, b. between 1860 and 1861, d. from 1 December 1937 to 19 December 1937
Birth* | Alfred, son of Edwin Bartlett and Mary Elizabeth "Lettie" Smith, was born between 1860 and 1861 in Illinois.1,2 |
Census1870 | Alfred appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Hanover, Cook Co., Illinois in the household of his parents, Edwin Bartlett and Mary Elizabeth "Lettie" Smith, as 9 yo Alfred Bartlett.2 |
Census1880 | Alfred appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Hanover Twp., Cook Co., Illinois in the household of his parents, Edwin Bartlett and Mary Elizabeth "Lettie" Smith, as 18 yo son Alfred Bartlett.3 |
Marriage* | He married Katherine C. "Katie" McNeil on 22 July 1896 in Denver, Arapahoe (now Denver) Co., Colorado. My preliminary research suggests their children were Earl Bartlett (1897-1937, m. Katherine W Otis), Nona B Bartlett (1901-1989, m. William R Goebel), and Katherine Bartlett (1908- ).4,5 |
Census1910* | Alfred and Katherine appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Boulder, Boulder Co., Colorado, enumerated 21 April 1910, as 45 yo farmer Alfred & 30 yo wife Katie Bartlett. Their children 12 yo Earl, 8 yo Nona, and 2 yo Katherine Bartlett were listed as living with them, as well as 16 yo niece Verna Woodworth (dau of Alfred's sister Hettie and her husband Frank Woodworth). Note Alfred has two enumerations in 1910. He's in Texas 8 days later farming with his brother Edwin. I suspect he had already left Colorado and that Katie gave the information to the census enumerator because, a) Alfred's father's birthplace is listed as US rather than Massachusetts, b) his mother's birthplace is listed as New Hampshire rather than New York.6 |
Census1910* | Alfred appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Justice Pct. 12, Cameron Co., Texas, enumerated 29 April 1910, as 48 yo married farmer Alfred Bartlet. His 50 yo widower farmer brother Edward Bartlett was listed as living with him. Alfred is listed as married for 14 years. There's no doubt this is the correct two men - both born Illinois, father born Massachusetts, mother born New York.7 |
Residence* | Alfred and Katherine resided at 400 Spruce in Boulder, Boulder Co., Colorado, in 1916. Alfred was a meatcutter for Rocky Mountain Stores.8 |
Census1920 | Alfred appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Pct. No. 23, Morgan Co., Colorado, as 58 yo farmer brother Alfred L Bartlett in the household of his brother Edwin C. Bartlett; as 60 yo widowed farmer Edwin C Bartlett.1 |
Marr-Divorce* | Alfred was divorced from Katherine C. "Katie" McNeil at Denver, Denver Co., Colorado, on 7 April 1922.9 |
Census1930 | Alfred appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Elizabeth Pct., Elbert Co., Colorado, as 68 yo divorced lodger & servant Alfred L Bartlett in the household of Martin & Luella Cooper.10 |
Death* | Alfred died from 1 December 1937 to 19 December 1937. Find A Grave's date is just Dec 1937. His obit was published on 19 Dec. As of 12 Nov 2024 it's not available at Newspapers.com.11,12 |
Burial* | He was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Wheat Ridge, Jefferson Co., Colorado. Find A Grave provides NO headstone photo. Note that buried in this cemetery are Alfred, his ex-wife Katie, and his brother Edwin Bartlett.11 |

Katherine C. "Katie" McNeil1,2
F, #11188, b. December 1877, d. August 1949
Birth* | Katherine was born in December 1877.3 |
Marriage* | She married Alfred L. Bartlett, son of Edwin Bartlett and Mary Elizabeth "Lettie" Smith, on 22 July 1896 in Denver, Arapahoe (now Denver) Co., Colorado. My preliminary research suggests their children were Earl Bartlett (1897-1937, m. Katherine W Otis), Nona B Bartlett (1901-1989, m. William R Goebel), and Katherine Bartlett (1908- ).1,4 |
Census1910* | Katherine and Alfred appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Boulder, Boulder Co., Colorado, enumerated 21 April 1910, as 45 yo farmer Alfred & 30 yo wife Katie Bartlett. I suspect he had already left Colorado and that Katie gave the information to the census enumerator because, a) Alfred's father's birthplace is listed as US rather than Massachusetts, b) his mother's birthplace is listed as New Hampshire rather than New York.5 |
Residence* | Katherine and Alfred resided at 400 Spruce in Boulder, Boulder Co., Colorado, in 1916. Alfred was a meatcutter for Rocky Mountain Stores.6 |
Census1920* | Katherine appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of 1420 Gilpin, Denver, Denver Co., Colorado, as 36 yo divorcee daughter Catherine Bartlett in the household of her parents John & Nellie T McNeil. Katie's three children were living with them as grandchildren, viz. 23 yo Earl, 18 yo Nona and 12 yo Catherine Bartlett. Also in the home was Katie's brother 42 yo widower David P McNeil.7 |
Marr-Divorce* | Katherine was divorced from Alfred L. Bartlett at Denver, Denver Co., Colorado, on 7 April 1922.2 |
Census1930 | Katherine appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of San Diego, San Diego Co., California, as 53 yo widow daughter Katherine Bartlett in the household of her parents John & Nellie T McNeil. Katie has a new son, 5.6 yo Jack G Bartlett, born in CO, his father born New Mexico. Clearly not Alfred. Nor did he take his father's surname, whatever that might be.8 |
Census1940 | Katherine appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Denver, Denver Co., Colorado, as 62 yo widowed mother-in-law Katherine Bartlett in the household of her son-in-law & daughter William R & Nona P Goebel. William & Nona's three children and four lodgers were also in the home.9 |
Death* | Katherine died in August 1949 at age 71.3 |
Burial* | She was buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Wheat Ridge, Jefferson Co., Colorado. Find A Grave provides headstone photo.3 |

Ethel W. Hutchinson1,2
F, #11189, b. February 1864, d. 1929
Birth* | Ethel was born in February 1864 in Illinois. Her headstone says 1865
Find A Grave lists her surname as Bartlett but being also her married name is suspect. The Fritz tree at Ancestry and her FamilySearch entry (MWND-1QJ) both show her maiden name as Hutchinson. An Ethel Hutchinson m. Thomas Williams in 1881 in Pueblo. Ref FS..3,4 |
|
Marriage* | Her first marriage was to Thomas Williams on 12 December 1881 at Pueblo, Pueblo Co., Colorado.5 |
CensusNF1* | Ethel and Thomas appeared on the 1885 Colorado State Census of Boulder Co., Colorado, enumerated 1 June 1885, as 23 yo coal miner Thos & 20 yo wife Ethel Williams. Their daughter Effie Ione was listed as living with them.6 |
Marriage* | Her second marriage was to Irving William Bartlett Sr., son of Edwin Bartlett and Mary Elizabeth "Lettie" Smith, between 1890 and 1895. Find A Grave's year, without citation, is 1885.3,2 |
Census1900* | Ethel and Irving appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Denver, Arapahoe (now Denver) Co., Colorado, enumerated 9 June 1900, as 36 yo salesman Irving W & 35 yo wife Ethel Bartlett. Either way he likely died before 1910.3 |
Census1910 | Ethel and Irving appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Longmont, Boulder Co., Colorado, enumerated 6 May 1910, as 46 yo retail butcher Irving 45 yo wife Ethel M Bartlett. Their children Eva "Dimple" and Irving William were listed as living with them. Ethel acknowledges this is her 2nd marriage and shows 4 born with 4 living.7 |
Residence* | Ethel and Irving resided at 1401 3rd Ave. in Boulder, Boulder Co., Colorado, in 1916, as well as their children Eva and Irving W Bartlett Jr, both students. Irving's widowed mother Mary L Bartlett is also likely living with them, though her address is listed as 401 3rd Ave.8 |
Death* | Ethel died in 1929.4 |
Burial* | She was buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Longmont, Boulder Co., Colorado. Find A Grave provides photo of joint headstone with husband Irving.4 |
