Census1870Marshall and Lucy appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Wilson Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 8 August 1870, as 39 yo farmer Marshal & 32 yo Lucy Mack. The Springfield Leader and Press reported this on 26 March. A O proved a bond in the amount of $4000. R B Mack, likely Marshall's brother Robert Barton, was a witness to the document.12,13

MotherSarah Sophia "Sue" Mack3 b. 11 Oct 1806, d. 5 Nov 1873
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Robert, son of Capt. John Armenius Mack Sr. and Sarah Sophia "Sue" Mack, was born on 13 July 1835 in Maury Co., Tennessee.4,5
Census1850Robert appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 8, Maury Co., Tennessee in the household of his parents, Capt. John Armenius Mack Sr. and Sarah Sophia "Sue" Mack, as 14 yo Robt Mack.6
MoveMarshall, William, Robert, Rowan, Osman and John joined the move of his parents from Maury County, TN to Greene County, MO in 1852.7
Milit-Service*2nd Lt. Robert Barton Mack served as 2nd Lieutenant with Co. G, 7th Arkansas Cavalry during the Civil War from 6 August 1862 to 6 December 1863. The 1890 Veteran's Schedule says he served with the 1st Arkansas Cavalry. The Civil War Records dB says he enlisted in Missouri, lived in Missouri, but musterd in in Arkansas. I'd be leery of this record except for the fact it shows correctly his death place as Wellston, Oklahoma. There are two other entries in the NPS database for possible Robert B Macks. One served with the Missouri Home Guard, Greene County Regiment. The other with the 6th Regiment, Missouri Cavalry. Possibly all three records are for the same man in different outfits.8,2,9
Marriage*His first marriage was to Sarah V. Dryden in February 1866. My preliminary research suggests their children were Nora Ella (1866–1944, m. Fnu Dial, res. Wellston, OK 1915), Joseph Henry Eugene "Harry" (c1867-1949, res. Orcutt, CA 1915, d. Los Angeles), Julia H (c1872-1959, m. Fnu Lewis, res. Alambra, CA in 1915, m. Fnu Clayton), Gracie G (c1873- , her dates at Find A Grave don't jive w/ census record), Louise Jane "Lulu" (c1875-1956, m. Grant Vaught or Gault, res. Springfield 1915), Charles Everett (1877–1907), and Sue Sophia "Susie" Mack (1879–1957, m. Fnu Newcomb, res. Alambra, CA in 1915, m. Fnu Jenkins).
Find A Grave's claim of marriage in Feb 1847 makes no sense.4,10,5
Census1870*Robert appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Wilson Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 4 August 1870, as 36 yo farmer Robert & 22 yo Sarah Mack. Their children 3 yo Nora and 1 yo Joseph Mack were listed as living with them.11
Census1880*Robert and Sarah appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Clay Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 9 June 1880, as 45 yo farmer Robbert D. & 32 yo wife Sarah V. Mack. The following sons & daughters were listed as living with them: namely, 14 yo Nora A, 12 yo Joseph H, 8 yo Jula H, 7 yo Gracey, 5 yo Lula J, 3 yo Chas E, and 1 yo Susan J Mack.12
Marriage*His second marriage was to Sarah V. Lnu circa 1885. I don't really buy this marriage. It's too much like Robert's first wife. The only evidence for it is the 1900 census.13
Census1900Robert and Sarah appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Clay Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, enumerated 15 June 1900, as 64 yo farmer Robert B & 52 yo wife Sarah V Mack. Their children 32 yo Nora A, 31 yo Henry E, 28 yo Julia H, 27 yo Gracie G, 25 yo Lulu J, 23 yo Charles E, and 20 yo Susan S Mack, as well as 23 yo nephew Henry W White.13
Census1910Robert appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Taylor Twp., Greene Co., Missouri, as 74 yo widower father-in-law Robert B Mack in the household of his daughter Lulu & husband Grant Vaught, and their 5 yo daughter Irene.14
Death*Robert died on 26 December 1915 at the home of his daughter Mrs. Nora Dial in Wellston, Lincoln Co., Oklahoma, at age 80.2,4,5
Burial*He was buried at Hazelwood Cemetery in Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri. Joint headstone photo available at Find A Grave.5
ResearchNote*Research Note of 24 September 2021 re Find A Grave. Marriage date: Find A Grave claims a marriage Feb 1847 with Robert born 1835 and Sarah born 1847!
Spouse(s): Did Robert really have two wives named Sarah V, both born Nov 1847? Find A Grave says Sarah was born Nov 1847 and died Feb 1881. The dates on her joint headstone with Robert say the same. Robert's obit in The Wellston News says the same. In the 1880 census she is listed as Sarah V Mack, 32 yo, born MO, parents both born TN. Yet in the 1900 census Robert's wife is Sarah V Mack, 52 yo, born Nov 1847 in MO, parents born MO & VA, married 15 years with 9 born & 8 living. In the 1910 census Robert is a widower living with daughter Lula and her husband Grant Vaught in Taylor, Greene, MO. Conclusion is that either Sarah didn't die in 1881 or Robert had two wives named Sarah V, born same year in MO.
Their children: Find A Grave claims the following children: Nora Ella (1866-1944), Harry Eugene Mack (1868-1949), Henry Joseph (?-?), Julia H. (?-?), Gracie G. (1872-1880), Louise Jane "Lula" (1875-1956)., Charles Everett (1877-1907), and Sue Sophie (1879-1957). Two obvious problems with this list:
* purported son Harry Eugene Mack is missing in family census records for 1880 and 1900, while siblings on both sides in both censuses are present.
* purported daughter Gracie G Mack's bd dates are given as 1872-1880, yet she is clearly present in the 1900 census, age 27 yo.
Place of death: Wellston, OK, not Greene, MO.1,15,4

Birth*William, son of Miles Pinkney "Pink" Murphy Sr. and Eleanor Ja Cynthia Mack, was born on 12 December 1835 in Maury Co., Tennessee.2
Census1840William is probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Miles Pinkney "Pink" Murphy Sr., in the 1840 Federal Census of Maury Co., Tennessee.3
Census1850William appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 7, Maury Co., Tennessee in the household of his parents, Miles Pinkney "Pink" Murphy Sr. and Eleanor Ja Cynthia Mack, as 14 yo Wm Murphy.4
Marriage*His first marriage was to Elizabeth Catherine Dugger on 12 December 1854 at Maury Co., Tennessee. My preliminary research suggests their children were Thomas PInkney (1855-1932, m. Margaret Elizabeth Farris 1879 TN), Mary J (c1857- , m. James Farris, perhaps m2 Fnu Parsons), Virginia (c1859-1930, m. William Maston Rea 1875 TN), William M (c1864-a1904, m. Ella C Carter 1884 TN), Donna C Murphy (1868-1932, m. Barton Jerome Harris 1893 TN), Blanche Octavia (1870-1935, m1 Jeremiah F Holt 1893 TN, m2 Thomas W Sowell 1902 TN, a widow in 1900), Miles Pinkney (1873-1918, poss. m. Musedora Melvina “Dora” Brawley, FSTrees says m. Anna Farris c1895 TN, admin father's estate), and Robert Franklin Murphy (1877-1958, m1 Rufie Mae Keltner 1898 Giles, TN, m2 Lillie D Spivey 1911 Giles Co). One other possible child is Ja Cynthia Murphy (c1868- , m. Jeff Davis Wells c1880 TN). I find census evidence for all but Ja Cynthia. The bond date was 11 Dec, the marriage 12 Dec. Find A Grave's date is 14 Dec.5,2
Census1860*William and Elizabeth appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Bigbyville PO, Dist. 7, Maury Co., Tennessee, enumerated 8 June 1860, as 24 yo farmer W N & 21 yo Elizabeth C Murphy. Their children 5 yo Tho P, 3 yo Mary J, and 1 yo Virginia were listed as living with them. Also in the home was 16 yo John Howell, a farm hand. William's parents & siblings live next door above.6
Census1870William appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Civil Dist. 7, Maury Co., Tennessee in the household of his parents, Miles Pinkney "Pink" Murphy Sr. and Eleanor Ja Cynthia Mack, as 34 yo school teacher W N Murphy.7
Census1880William and Elizabeth appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Civil Dist. 7, Maury Co., Tennessee, enumerated 19 June 1880, as 44 yo farmer W N & 42 yo wife E C Murphy. Their children 16 yo Wm. M, 12 yo D C (Donna), 9 yo O B (Octavia Blanche), 5 yo M P (Miles Pinkney), and 2 yo R F (Robt Franklin) Murphy were listed as living with them.8
Marriage*His second marriage was to Mary E. Parsons in 1891. Married 8 years in the 1900 census with 3 born and 2 living.9,10
Census1900*William and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Civil Dist. 5, Maury Co., Tennessee, enumerated 14 June 1900, as 64 yo farmer William N & 46 yo wife May E Murphy. Others in the household were their 26 yo son Miles P, their widowed 28 yo daughter Octavia B Holt, and two step-daughters, 17 yo Effie and 15 yo Annie Farris. These two are a bit confusing. William's son Thomas by his first married Margaret Farris. If these were his kids they'd be granddaughters, not step-daughters. If they are in fact step-daughters it implies William's m2 May was previously married to a Fnu Farris and these were her children. They could confirm part of the '3 born, 2 living' part of May's census entry. Also in the home were two farm laborers.10
Death*William died on 13 December 1905 in Maury Co., Tennessee, at age 70.2
Burial*He was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Columbia, Maury Co., Tennessee. Headstone photo available at Find A Grave.2
Estate-Will*William Nathaniel Murphy left a will dated 4 May 1906 at Maury Co., Tennessee, naming Thomas P Murphy, Miles Murphy, J D Wells and Wilburn Sowell as executors. Named heirs included his wife Mary E, son Miles, stepdaughter Effie Paris, son W M Murphy, his other six children, namely Thomas P, Jay Wells, Virginia Rea, Donna C Harris, Blanche Sowell and Robert F Murphy.
The date is odd being after the death date shown on his headstone. Is it a transcription typo or a stonecutter's error?.11

Birth*Miles, son of Miles Pinkney "Pink" Murphy Sr. and Eleanor Ja Cynthia Mack, was born on 11 July 1846 in Maury Co., Tennessee. Pickney or Pinkney? Find A Grave persists in the Pickney version for both Miles and his father. This Miles' headstone clearly says Pinkney. His father's just has a P. In the 1920 census Miles is enumerated as Pink Murphy. That settles it in my mind.4,1

Census1880*Miles and Lucy appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Civil Dist. 7, Maury Co., Tennessee, enumerated 18 June 1880, as 33 yo farmer M P & 25 yo wife Lucy A Murphy. Census1860Mary appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Dist. 7, Maury Co., Tennessee in the household of her parents, Miles Pinkney "Pink" Murphy Sr. and Eleanor Ja Cynthia Mack, as 19 yo Mary J Murphy.3
Marriage*She married James B. Harris on 27 September 1862 in Maury Co., Tennessee. My preliminary research suggests their children were Miles Pinkney "Pink" (1863-1934, m. Laura Josephine Brooks 1891 Maury, TN, admin of his father's estate), Sallie E (1865-1901, m. John Silas Garrett 1891 Maury, TN, widow Garrett 1900 census), William Jackson (1868-1949, m1 Allie Lnu 1895, m2 Eva Jane Chumley 1909), Catherine H (1869-1870), M V (daughter, c1870- ), Virginia Mack (1875- , m. Walter Orlando Brooks 1899 Southport, TN), Cora Lee (c1877- ), and Vivian T Harris (c1885- ).
James may have m2 Nancy Lnu after m1 Mary's death. This is supported by a Find A Grave bio and by James' death announcement in The Hearald and Mail which states he was survived by his 2nd wife and 6 children.4,5,6
Census1870*Mary and James appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Culleoka, Maury Co., Tennessee, enumerated 30 July 1870, as 33 yo farmer J D & 25 yo Mary Harris. Death*Mary died on 26 November 1884 in Maury Co., Tennessee, at age 44.1
Burial*She was buried at Murphy Cemetery in Southport, Maury Co., Tennessee. Find A Grave provides photo of her headstone.1
ResearchNote*Research Note of 20 October 2021 re her husband. I've entered James as Mary's husband but have not been able to find a source linking our particular Mary (d/o Pink Murphy & EJC Mac) with the Mary who married James B Harris. It could be hlepful to find first cousins living together in the census record but so far I've found none. One point in favor of believing this scenario is that Mary & James named their firstborn son Miles Pinkney, a name which is well used in the family.

Mary E. Parsons1,2

F, #9049, b. September 1860
Last Edited14 Oct 2022
Birth*Mary was born in September 1860 in Tennessee.2
Marriage*She married William Nathaniel Murphy, son of Miles Pinkney "Pink" Murphy Sr. and Eleanor Ja Cynthia Mack, in 1891. Married 8 years in the 1900 census with 3 born and 2 living.3,2
Census1900*Mary and William appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Civil Dist. Also in the home were two farm laborers.2
Estate-WillMary was named an heir in the will of William Nathaniel Murphy, her husband, dated 4 May 1906 at Maury Co., Tennessee.4

Last Edited14 Oct 2022
Birth*Andrew was born on 6 February 1836 in Tennessee, s/o John Leonard & Jane Gilbreath Morrow.2
Marriage*His first marriage was to Sarah Constantine Elizabeth Murphy, daughter of Miles Pinkney "Pink" Murphy Sr. and Eleanor Ja Cynthia Mack, on 28 July 1861 at Maury Co., Tennessee. My preliminary research suggests their children were Eleanor Jane "Ellen" (c1863- , m. James G West 1886 TN), William Theodore L (1865-1918, m. Linda L Tarpley 1889), Robert Andrew (1867-1911, admin of his father's estate), Nancy Roberta (1871-1934), James Murphy (c1874- , perhaps m. Minnie Lnu, res. Giles, TN 1900 census), John Pinkney (1876-1965, m1 Florence E Simone 1940 Los Angeles, m2 Lodema E Whitsett 1951 Los Angeles), and Joseph Franklin Morrow (1878-1947, m. Clara C Lnu). MotherEliza Louiza Mack1 b. 17 Mar 1811, d. 7 Nov 1895
Last Edited29 Apr 2024
Birth*Louise, daughter of Newton Harvey Matthews and Eliza Louiza Mack, was born circa July 1850 in Tennessee.2
Census1850Louise appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dist. 7, Maury Co., Tennessee in the household of her parents, Newton Harvey Matthews and Eliza Louiza Mack, as 0.3 yo Louisa Matthews.2
Census1860Louise appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Dist. 7, Maury Co., Tennessee in the household of her parents, Newton Harvey Matthews and Eliza Louiza Mack, as 10 yo Louisa Matthews.3
ResearchNote*Research Note of 23 October 2021 re Find A Grave. The memorial for Louise Jane Matthews Hackney (1849-1875, memorial no. 11149267) claims she m. Joseph James Hackney (1844-1894) and is buried at Matthews Cemetery, Southport, Maury County. That's plausible but Find A Grave provides no evidence in support except an unreadable double headstone with his m2 Martha Rebecca Stone. I find no 1870 census for Joseph & Louise.
Joseph and m2 Martha R Stone purportedly had issue Mary Caroline (1878-1890), 1st Lt. William Thomas (1878-1939, m. Annie Maude Duke), Neelley Bennett (1883-1933, m. Annie Sowell), Eva Beams (1885-1955, m. Marvin Hendley Gray), Robert McKennon (1888-1889), and Herbert Nelson Hackney (1890-1902).
The Matthews/Dempsey tree at Ancestry gives Louise's husband's name as Jacob S, not Joseph J, Hackney. The only 'evidence' in support is an 1870 census from Wolfe Co, KY, for 28 yo Jacob S & 22 yo Louisa Hackney, with 2 yo daughter Mary M Hackney.
Louise's FSTrees entry (ID M47B-CFV) shows husband Joseph J Hackney, m. 19 Nov 1868 in Maury County, with her name as Lou J Matthias. The initials J & S are easily confused so that's not an issue. I've seen other Matthews sources which spelled it Matthias so that's not a big concern either.
I've not entered any of these people until some better source materials show up.4
